With the start of the new year so to brings the start of the new Freestyle Now Western Australian Skatepark Series Round 1 kicked off at the Rockingham skatepark to a great number of competitors and spectators, it was a awesome turnout. What is really good is seeing so many people and parents at the competition and supporting.
At all Freestyle Now competitions where possible we run a girls only class this is to help get more girls involved into the sports and the scene and at Rockingham it was good to see Ebony Rodriguez skating again as well as young Bethany Baohm out there on the bmx. A 1st and 2nd respectively for the two girls
The scooter beginners had an good number and with so much talent it won’t be long until we see some of them moving up to the advanced class. Good work to Conner Atkinson for taking the first place, a young guy but with a lot of power in his riding. Young Talyn Galic has been progressing well in the beginners class and his second place was well deserving. His cannonball over the spine got may fist bumps and hi fives from his peers. Kadin Clarke rode well and hit up some good tricks to take the 3rd place. The scooter advanced had young ripper Levi Mills take the top place but it was a close competition with only 4 points between 1st and 2nd place by Ethan Mackenzie. Both of these young riders and gaining more and more skills at every competition. Caleb Pratt rode well but was a little inconsistent and took the 3rd place.
Skateboard was represented well at round 1 with Ton DeSancha taking out the win in the beginners with is being his first ever competition, he was pumped but it was a tight top two with Tody Dodds only 2 points behind in the second place. It was good to see Taj Gosling getting in there and taking the 3rd place. Skateboard advanced was all about Alex Yates. He was on fire and threw down the radness. 2nd place went to Mason Brown who ended up taking out the 2nd place in the 2014 series. Mason was rolling through the runs well, it was good to see him skate. 3rd place went to Chonchoe Lasvendous. He was a little less consistent in his runs at Rockingham which kept his scores down some. Chonchoe did how ever take out the number 1 spot in the 2014 F.N.W.A.S.S.
The bmx class had some rippers rolling about throwing down. These guys were pumped. Jarred Schilling took out the win in the beginners and proceeded to get stoked. 2nd place was taken out by Adam Pearson and Reece Barwick was rad enough to get the 3rd place. Bmx Advanced it was all Dylan Schmidt. Large and big are two words to describe Dylan’s runs. Growing up riding the Rockingham park was defiantly an advantage. Dylan also took out the year end title in the F.N.W.A.S.S. Kyle Fielder entered the beginners class but as soon as he started his first run we knew he was in the wrong class, and was moved up to the advanced where his speed, flow and style earned him the second place. 3rd place went to Jesse Brown who seemed to be a little off on the consistency which did cost him some points but he still shredded as always.
A big thank you to the City of Rockingham for their continual support of skatepark competitions and skatepark coaching workshops sessions. It is defiantly helping to build a great scene and encourage riders to progress. Thank you to our supporters Local BMX, 4 skateboard co. and Sacrifice Scooters.
Round 2 of the Freestyle Now Western Australian Skatepark Series takes place at the Kwinana skatepark on Friday 13th February so make sure you get along and get involved.
