Redemption, Radical Lines, and Resilience at Bassendean’s Summer Skatepark Showdown

Perth’s summer has finally made an appearance and on the first of many scorching days, we headed out to Bassendean Skatepark to facilitate a fierce competition with divisions in Skateboard, Scooter and BMX. The day was filled with fun, laughs and healthy competition as the riders braved the heat, putting together radical lines and flowing around this classic Perth skatepark.

The riders tried to pace themselves as the day kicked off, warming up but not wanting to wear themselves out in the heat. First in line to show us what action sports in Perth are all about is the scooter divisions. The scooter divisions are always some of our largest and many of the riders use our competitions as a community space to catch up with friends and have some fun. Special mention to Flynn Deyonker for taking out 1st place in beginner, he has attended a few of our competitions of late and we can see that he will go far in scooter riding. He held a flawless first run with no bails which certainly helped to capture the win. Our judges are looking for difficulty, diversity and consistency in every rider and their lines.

As the day progressed, we moved into the skateboard competition and it did not disappoint, Beginner saw two of our favourite up and comers, the Harrington sisters. Scarlette took out the win with a consistent run which utilised the whole skatepark. Showing off her skills in the half pipe with an awesome rock and roll. Opal Harrington had a delayed start due to an ant bite but she came back, guns blazing and took out her first ever 2nd place title. She was stoked and it was well deserved indeed. Tayah Payne and Kyle Wisniewski battled it out in Intermediate. Tayah took the win, showing off seamless board slides on the down rail, something her opponent Kyle just couldn’t top. Both riders brought the heat, at the hottest time of the day and for that we were left thoroughly impressed with their perseverance and discipline. Skateboard Open was one to remember, although Maximilliano went home with the win, we have to give a shout out to Jason Hills’ family of about 12! They were sitting on the sidelines cheering Jason on with choreographed dances and rhythmic chants. I think all of our spectators can take a leaf out of their book.

Finally, we rolled into BMX. This was a very fun competition to watch and the comradery between riders reminds us of one of the important “Whys” when it comes to facilitating these events. Community. A massive shout out to father son duo, Gerrard and Lachlan McGough. Lachlan took out 2nd place in our Beginner division and his run was full of so much confidence, originality and fun. Smiling all the way through. As for Gerrard McGough, he managed to come away with 1st place in the Open division. The last time he rode Bassendean competition back in February  he ended up in hospital with a broken collar bone? Talk about a redemption story! Another special mention to Timothy Pearson who tried mightily for the 540 that he got seamlessly in the warm up, unfortunately tricks from the warm up don’t count for your final scores, but we know he can do it and can’t wait to see him incorporate it into his line in the next competition.

A massive thank you goes out to the Town of Bassendean for making this event possible and to all of our competitors. This day was a wonderful way to welcome in the warmer weather.
