The Bassendean Skatepark Competition brought the energy from start to finish, with blue skies, a solid crowd, and an epic day of action sports. Regulars rolled in early, setting up gazebos and camp chairs, ready for a full day of riding, cheering, and good times. Huge shoutout to the Town of Bassendean for the ongoing support and to every rider, skater, and spectator who made the day what it was one to remember!
Scooters kicked things off, and the level of riding was next-level. In the beginner division, James Deyonker took the win with a super clean, dialed run. Tighe Sterpini followed up in 2nd with solid, consistent tricks, and Bailey Popkes rounded out the top three in 3rd with a strong and determined ride. The intermediate comp was stacked, but it was Jayce Blakers who stole the show, stomping a massive backflip that had the crowd going wild and securing another 1st place. Flynn Read locked in 2nd with a run full of style and energy, while Archie Edwards snagged 3rd, showing off his steady progression. The open division was all about technical mastery, with Joshua O’Neil taking 1st place thanks to a seriously well-put-together run. Brandon Black came through in 2nd with smooth execution, proving once again why he’s a consistent podium finisher.

Next up, skateboarding took over, bringing creativity, style, and some serious talent to the park. In the beginner division, Etta Johnston had a dream debut, taking 1st place in her first-ever competition. With her whole family there cheering her on, she showed just how much fun skateboarding is all about. Jaimie Ogley held it down for 2nd place, throwing down some big tricks before an unfortunate ankle injury, sending her all the good vibes for a speedy recovery! Ava Knibbs rounded out the top three in 3rd with a smooth and stylish run. The open division had some real heavy hitters. Reggo Pain claimed 1st with his out-of-the-box tricks that kept everyone guessing. Brendan Johnston, Etta’s dad, backed up the family name in 2nd place, proving that skateboarding talent definitely runs in the blood. Thomas Agius came through with a clean and composed performance to take 3rd.
Clockwise from top left – Freestyle Now team rider, Jayce Blakers throwing a massive flare that he has been fighting to land in competition recently, today was the day. – Jaimie Ogley with an impressive ollie to flat, this trick did unfortunately leave her injured but it didn’t stop her from getting back up and giving it another try! – Ryan Aquilina showing off a seamless no-hander and making great use of the park with power and precision. – BMX Open first place getter, Connor Riley who has started popping up at few more recent competitions, in the middle of a wicked tailwhip transfer out of transition and onto the bank right in front of the judges. – For more photos from this event find the facebook album here.
Wrapping up the day, BMX brought the heat with some insane riding. The beginner division saw Gavin Penny take 1st place with a solid, well-rounded run. Garnet Rock was right behind him in 2nd, launching a massive air out of the small quarter, a favorite spot for the BMX riders. Salva Hogan took 3rd with a strong and consistent ride. In intermediate, Jake Whelan powered through to 1st place with a precise, dialed run. Jayce Blakers kept the energy high in 2nd, throwing a huge backflip attempt that had the crowd on edge. Timothy Pearson came in 3rd with a clean and controlled run. But it was the open BMX division that really had everyone on their feet. Connor Riley came out of nowhere with a run that hit like a machine gun, trick after trick, back-to-back, each one more impressive than the last. His trick list was impressive, tailwhips, 540s, foot jams, 720, he was in full radness mode, securing 1st place in style. It was great to see the progression of Archie Welten and his 2nd place. Smooth 540’s and barspin fakies were just some of his highlights. Western Australian BMX legend Ryan Aquilina rounded out the podium in 3rd, bringing his usual creativity and power to the mix.
The Bassendean Skatepark Competition was all about progression, community, and pushing limits. From first-time competitors like Etta to seasoned riders throwing down massive tricks like Ryan, the stoke was high, and the talent was unreal. Huge thanks again to everyone who came down, we can’t wait to do it all over again soon!
