The Fremantle skatepark competition was high vibes all Friday evening, with the last day of school for term 1 done, what better way to celebrate than with a Freestyle Now BMX and scooter skatepark competition. The format of this competition was a little different to usual, we split the park into two sections. The street and mini ramp as section 1 and the large bowl as section 2. Each competitor got one, 1 minute run in each section with both scores for each section being combined for the final leaderboard. Unfortunately the BMX bowl round was interrupted by forces of nature, and we were rained out before BMX could have their bowl round. Luckily we had scores from their street runs which we could use and despite the rain, we made the absolute most of the competition and had a stack of fun regardless.
We kicked off the competition with scooter beginners, this division saw some new and some familiar faces. In 1st place was a newcomer, Geordie Parsons, Geordie whipped out some huge tricks in his first runs including both rails across the park. His riding was precise and next time he competes he will surely be moving up into intermediate. In second place we saw Ben Measley. Like Geordie, Ben’s riding was of a high standard relative to the beginner division and although it was a wicked watch, we will be keen to see these guys back competing again in our intermediate division. Curtis Gepp managed to come away with 3rd with a smooth and solid run. Scooter intermediate saw a few familiar faces and some great talent across all the riders. In the end it was Cruz West who came out on top. Cruz has attended a few of our competitions and it’s always great to see the progression in real time. Kirill Ashchepkov and Flynn Read rounded out the podium, making good use of the street section and mini. Moving into our Open scooter division, we had a bigger group than usual making the division a very fun watch. Bailey Brolsma took out 1st place, showcasing what hard work, talent and fun look like for scooter riders in Perth. Bailey was ahead of the pack in both his street and bowl runs by over 5 points and all up beating the others by 10, a huge feat. Tristan Sinclair followed in second, putting up a good fight and in third place we saw Isaac Carey who was less than a point behind Tristan. A shout out to Brandon Black who came in fourth place, he is a welcome familiar face at the majority of our competitions and seeing him progress has been wicked.
Clockwise form top left – Lachlan Mcgough with a huge air over the a-frame. – Cruz West hitting the same obstacle with style. – Bailey Brolsma hitting the biggest rail in the park. – Bianca Martin with a massive can-can over the a-frame. As we moved through the divisions we saw sprinkles of rain and watched closely to see if it would be unsafe to continue the competition, luckily at this stage it was still safe and we kept the momentum going! We managed to get through BMX in the street section but unfortunately the rain stopped us before we could see them in the bowl. The next scores are based only on their street runs. BMX Beginner was our largest group of the day, a huge 12 competitors. The beginners always bring the stoke, keeping the fun alive in their riding and reminding the older crew what action sports are all about. In first place we saw Sydney Litchfield who won only by 0.66 of a point, closely behind him was Garnet Rock with huge high airs over the a frame and in 3rd was Finn Oliver with a solid run. We had a few ties in this division, for 5th place and 10th place proving it was an extremely tight competition without the bowl runs to diversify the scores. In our BMX intermediate section Charlie Hill took the win with a wicked run, each competitor in intermediate was less than 2 points away from the rider above them, again making it extremely close. Bianca Martin and Liam Rhodes tied for second place, showcasing power across the whole street section. And following them up and rounding out the podium we saw Thomas Hollingsworth, a very familiar face. The BMX open was a fun one to watch with a surprise entry from Shane Ellis, usually a transition focused rider but still hitting huge airs and an impressive manual around the whole street course. Over 40 seconds of manual is an insane skill to have and won him first place. In second we had a competition newcomer, Massimo Crotti, all the way from Italy. Massimo’s riding was fun and seemingly effortless making it a good watch. Following him in third place we had Joshua O’Neil. Josh showcased some awesome skill in the street section and when he wasn’t competing he was the loudest competitor in the park, cheering on all the competition.
Overall, the competition was one for the books and we had a wicked time, disappointed we got rained out but in true Freestyle Now style we made the very most of it and still managed to have a fun time, bringing the community together to showcase their hard work, talent and connect with one another. Huge shout out to the City of Fremantle, without them we wouldn’t have been able to have such an awesome start to the school holiday fun.
