Another day, another comp! We are stoked that the City of Swan asked to collaborate with us to activate Midvale skatepark with a skatepark competition. It is our first time hosting an event at this skatepark and although it was a smaller turn out than usual, the tricks, the vibes and the good times were large. This park has a wicked street section and large bowl and the competitors made great use of both in their runs, we had scooter, skateboard and BMX participants at midvale and we were inspired by the way they utilised this space.
Up first we had scooter beginner, young Jonah Grund was our only competitor and so of course he came out on top. Jonah made great use of the park and had fun, which is what action sports are all about. In scooter intermediate we saw Freya Iburg take out the win, this talented rider pops up every now and then at our competitions and when she does, we are stoked. In second place we had Cruz West, competition regular and in third it was Flynn Read who killed it with style and precision. In scooter open, taking out first was our most regular scooter competitor, Brandon Black, in second we had Joshua O’Neil, another very regular competitor and hype man. And in third a new face (for scooter atleast) Oliver Lane! Usually competing in skate he thought he would give scooter a shot and he came up with some super out of the box trickery for the judges.
Next up was skateboard beginner, Ellie Stathakis came in first place, seeing her climb the leader board has been awesome and so well deserved, she showed off some wicked handplants and 50/50 grinds which scored her that top spot. Following closely behind was young Opal Harrington in second place and in third we saw Alice Bouwer, a competition newcomer who has been gaining on the other competitors. Great to see her and her sister Hazel Bouwer back again. In intermediate we had a fierce showdown between the only 2 competitors but in the end it was Tayah Payne who came out on top making great use of the street section with a seamless run, landing trick after trick. Following behind was Scarlette Harrington who put up a good fight and still put down a radical run. And another showdown between only two competitors in the open skateboard section, Sebastian Coonan, a returning competitor from his first competition at Balga, came out on top! And Oliver Lane, also known as Reggo, followed closely behind.
Clockwise from top left – Freya Iburg throwing down over the hip. – Oliver Lane debuting in the scooter open division. – Tayah Payne getting radical over the weirdest obstacle in the park. – Jakob Kestel with a signature handplant in the bowl. To see the full album head to our facebook here.
Over to BMX, our busiest divisions of the day, we saw Garnet Rock in first, Lachlan Mcgough in second and Ziggy Ellis in third. These young riders put on an awesome show. Special mentions to Otis Park, the brother of Pacey Park who also competed in beginner, Otis made his debut into competitions and he was radical. BMX intermediate was a fierce showdown, with two competitors throwing backflips, talk about keeping the calibre of tricks high! In first place it was Bianca Martin, following closely behind was Zac Trainor and in third place we saw Cooper Severinsen. And one of our main attractions of the day was certainly the BMX open, an OG rider and old friend, Jakob Kestel rocked up. Jakob took out first place, and no we aren’t biased. His riding is just that good! He has such originality that even seasoned BMX riders can’t name all of his tricks. It was great for our community to see some really out of the box BMX riding and hopefully it will inspire the next generation. In second place was Kody Strong, Strong by name and by nature, his riding is off the chain. Kody executed a huge flare over the hip, wowing the judges and spectators alike. And in third, hype man and seasoned rider, Joshua O’Neil. Shout out to Gerard Mcgough, expanding his skill set and making great use of his pegs across the park.
Although it was a smaller crowd, our competition at Midvale gave way for more connection with the community, more competitors in the spotlight and a radically fun time while activating this awesome skate space. Thanks again to the City of Swan, without them we wouldn’t have been able to deliver this awesome event and provide a place for the community to come together, show off their skills and have fun. See you at the next one!
