Freestyle Now made an exciting return to the Esperance Agricultural Show for the first time since 2006, and after 18 years Freestyle Now brought the high energy BMX stunt show back to the Esperance agricultural show. The action-packed BMX stunt show featured Freestyle Now team members Shaun Jarvis and Luke Tooze as well as east coast riders Brodie Quick and Freestyle Now show regular Andrew Ahumada. The riders all delivered a spectacle of flips, spins, and gravity-defying stunts that had the crowds roaring with excitement.
The triple backflip is a very dangours stunt. The precision required from the riders is paramount. timing is everything.
The atmosphere was electric as Shaun Jarvis, Freestyle Now co-founder and show MC, kept the crowd hyped with his signature commentary and enthusiasm. His insights into the tricks and the riders’ skills brought everyone closer to the action, while his call for noise from the crowd only made the stunts bigger and more thrilling. His on the edge of the ramp flatland tricks added another level of danger to the performances. As Always Luke Tooze brought his own level of energy and wild style of BMX freestyle riding showing why is the top rider in Western Australia, crazy 360 double tail whips, bike flips and backflip combinations. Brodie Quick the young gun from the east coast showed why he is one of the big up and comers in BMX. Meanwhile, Andrew Ahumada, a true legend of the sport, displayed his mastery of flowing combos and powerful air tricks with unmatched finesse and control. Andrew Ahumada, always one to push the limits, amazed spectators with massive backflips and stylish combinations that only he could pull off with such ease. The camaraderie and fun among the riders was evident in the shows, creating a dynamic show filled with laughter, banter, and plenty of high-fives. Despite the long break since Freestyle Now’s last performance in Esperance, the energy and enthusiasm from the local community made it feel like no time had passed. Freestyle Now is thrilled to have been part of the Esperance event once again, spreading the passion for action sports and inspiring the next generation of riders. A huge thank you to the crowd for their loud cheers and unwavering support—because as always, the more noise, the bigger the tricks!

Luke’s riding is always something special to watch, with his fearless approach and hyped energy which he brings to every performance. The shows also had Freestyle Now squad member Jack Carwardine on the microphone duties amping up the crowd ensuring their cheers fueled the riders’ stoke. Jack also had some time on his bike during the shows. The Groundswell festival BMX stunt shows also featured Freestyle Now co-founder Shaun Jarvis pulling double duty as both MC and performer, spinning his signature flatland moves that kept fans glued to the edge of their seats.

What a super rad stunt they did showing how much trust is required when performing high risk stunts in a show. The chemistry between the riders was undeniable as they pushed each other to go bigger, higher, and wilder with each show.
Groundswell is all about bringing the community together, and this event proved once again why it’s such a fantastic platform for promoting action sports culture. With perfect weather and the beach as a backdrop, the vibe was nothing short of incredible. From younger fans seeing their first live BMX show to seasoned riders inspired by what’s possible, Groundswell 2024 delivered fun, inspiration, and unforgettable moments. The 2024 Groundswell Grind Skateboard Competition once again lit up Scarborough Beach, bringing together skaters from across Western Australia for the biggest bowl event of the year. This year’s competition didn’t disappoint, with intense rivalries, impressive new talent, and unforgettable moments that highlighted why this is one of WA’s most anticipated skate events. Held in the iconic Scarborough Beach bowl as part of the Groundswell Festival, the competition offered divisions for many age groups in both men’s and women’s divisions , including 9 years and under, 12 years and under, 16 years and under, Open, and the always impressive Masters division for skaters over 35. The Open Men’s and Women’s divisions continued to be crowd favorites, showcasing incredible skill and style with a $3000 prize purse on the line. With clear skies and a supportive crowd, skaters threw down their best tricks making the bowl come alive with energy and excitement. Each skater had 3 runs in the Scarborough Beach Bowl of 45 seconds with only their best run counting as their score. This allows them to be a bit more liberal with the tricks and lines knowing that with three runs they should produce some magic and get the points for the wins.

Opening up the event was the 9 and under mens. It was all Levi Pagdanganan from the start. He was on fire with some fast skating great lines and his ollie airs were well above coping. Qualifying in first he stayed in that spot at the end of the finals. Elliott Hanly and Davie Howes also made it into the finals and tried hard to match Levi but just fell short in the points to challenge him. It was great to see them both making the finals. We also need to give a shout out to one of the most hyped skaters we know, Cab Constantine who missed out on the finals but we are sure he will be in there for 2025. The 9 Years and Under women was a full group of super charging skaters. In the qualifying it was Scarlett Harrington leading with 16.33 points and Pepper Connolly on 16 points with Rhenna Mottershead sitting on 15.33 points, it was a tight comp. Seeing Scarlett drop in the deep end of the bowl was just one of the highlights of the event. The deep end must be 10 times taller than she is. In the finals Pepper rolled through the Scarborough bowl with enough radness to take the win with 18.33 points to Scarlett’s 16.67.
In the 12 years and under men’s Oscar Blackburn ripped around the bowl well enough to take the win from Oliver Brown by only .66 of a point with the 3rd place joint to Liam Davie, It was great to see Oliver hitting up the big bowl and we hope to see more of his skating as we more forward into the future. The 12 Years and Under women’s only had two competitors but that did not stop the level of skating on display from both, It was Elena Riley taking the win from Addison Sie.
Up next was the 16 Years and Under Mens. The was another class that only had two competitors but not just any competitors we are talking about our next open place getters Otis Sienkewitz and Jake Turnbull. These two are a treat to watch, high airs, long grinds, are super rad lines. Either of these two could have taken the win but for Groundswell Grind 2024 it was Otis (34.33 points) who just had the edge over Jake (33.00 points), Watch for both of them making move into the open class. The 16 Years and Under Women’s belonged to Lali Perroni who has had a few years of competition experience taking the win by 4 points. 2nd place went to Hayley Norris who had only just started competing in skateboard competitions about 8 months ago. Taking the third it was great to see Ava Knibbs getting into it and showing no fear skating such a massive big bowl.
Clockwise from Top Left – Gogo Dale in the 12 with a slash grind. – Vai Evans plays in the 12 like its nothing. – James Rixom getting some serious airtime. – Grant Huggins rocks it up, showing us age is just a number – Find the full album of photos on our Facebook page here
The masters, the over 35’s. This was one of the highlights of the Groundswell Grind. With eight competitors it was the biggest class of skaters. Seeing Laura Brown getting into it was amazing, such an inspiration to many and we hope she continues to inspire both young and old to take up skateboarding. But the masters was dominated by the legend Grant Huggins, he was untouchable. So much power and style, rock n roll in the deep end, hand plants, board slides, 50/50’s he had it all. You can tell he knows skateboarding, it was a treat to watch. Coming in second was Herb Faust who also is an accomplished skater but was 6 points behind Grant in the finals. Third place went to the legend Junior Linke, The oldest skater in the competition, its rumored he is 60 but doesn’t look a day over 21. We also need to mention the other oldies Jon Root, Geoff Knibbs, Jeremy Watkins and Joe Mack. Watching these skaters hit the bowl proved that skateboarding is a lifelong journey, and their presence was inspiring to both the young and the seasoned crowd.
The Open divisions saw intense competition with big names going head-to-head. In the men’s open class during qualifying it was all James Rixom (31.67 points), he was untouchable qualifying 4 points higher than 2nd qualifier Cruz Evans (27.67points). The top 4 were going into a final, and what a final it turned out to be. Qualifying in 3rd was Vai Evans (25.33 points) and the youngest of the Evans Brothers, Zen got the 4th (24.67 points). This was going to be a final unmatched in Groundswell Grind history. First out for the finals was Zen Evans and right from the start it was on. We thought he skated well in qualifying, the finals was just something else, his speed, varials, grinds and lines were exceptional, it’s like he was holding back in the qualifying, everything was clean. A very deserving win for the 2024 Groundswell Grind to Zen Evans with a finals score of 37.33 and $700 richer. Taking the 2nd place was James Rixom who skated phenomenally with some of the highest airs and longest board slides we have seen at Groundswell Grind but missed out on the top spot by a few points with a score of 35.00 points and taking home $500. Third place didn’t move with Vai Evans remaining there but upping his score with 28.67 points and winning $300 for his radicalness. Flowing into 4th place was Cruz Evans with 28.00 points, a close one. The men’s open class was missing last year’s Groundswell Grind winner Adam Pacynko who was super pumped for the competition and had been preparing for it for months, had his runs down and knew every part of the bowl. His first run dropped in the deep end, hit the first wall with an air, hit the second wall and then fell to flat bottom using his elbow as a stopping mechanism, which we all know doesn’t work. It was a trip to the hospital and some surgery to make it all better. His resilience and sportsmanship were a reminder of the passion and grit that make skateboarding such a tight-knit community. There is always 2025 Adam and we hope to see you in the mix. Shout out also to Jake Smith and Khailani Nielsen for taking on the behemoth of Scarborough Beach bowl.
Mia Kretzer – Invert on the hip
The Women’s Open belonged to Mia Kretzer who’s been on a whirlwind skateboard trip this year with international competitions, Xgames gold medals, Guinness world records and everything in between but Groundswell Grind is still her favorite competition, it’s on home turf with her community and friends. Mia had some epic runs, frontside smith grinds, kickflip disasters, hand plants and fakie 540’s. It was full. 35.00 points and $700. Second place went to Hailee Roberts. Hailee had some great runs showing how she knows the bowl like the back of her hand, 31.00 points and $500. Third place was all on Gogo Dale from Margaret River with 28.67 points and $300. It’s been great seeing their progress over the past few years in skateboarding and they have a great skate career in front of them. Looking forward to see Gogo rip it up in 2025
Groundswell Grind is a day filled with camaraderie, excitement, and unforgettable moments, showcasing the unique spirit and culture of the skateboarding community. Its a day when the skateboard community comes together and celebrates all things skateboarding, young or old, beginners or high rollers, it makes no difference everyone is there for the joy skateboarding brings. It’s about forming a community, making new friends, seeing old friends and getting some introduced into skateboarding and just being involved.
A massive thank you goes out to the City of Stirling for making this event possible and all our sponsors, Modus bearings, Maple Road Skateboards, Aikenheads Skateboards, Sneaky Wholefoods, Red Dragon Skateboards, The Four Skateboard Co, Momentum Skateshop and Livid Skate. Big shout out to DJ Bamm B for pushing out the tunes all day and bringing the energy with the tracks. It wouldn’t be a groundswell grind without you.

Scarborough Beach Skatepark was the epicenter of high-energy action sports once again for the 2024 Groundswell Festival Rail Jam. This year’s jam turned up the stoke, showcasing insane levels of progression as BMX, scooter, and skateboard riders from Perth and beyond threw down with unparalleled intensity. Backed by Animal Bikes, Core Scooters, Grit Scooters, and Modus Bearings, this year’s Rail Jam wasn’t just another event – it was a raw, street-style showdown filled with next-level tricks and high-impact moments.
Taking over Saturday afternoon, the Rail Jam brought together three separate sessions for BMX, scooter, and skateboard riders, each facing off on a technical rail and stair setup that tested their skills and creativity. With $200 cash set for first place and a stack of prizes from our supporters, riders pushed their limits and let their riding do the talking.
The BMX session was a fierce display of technical mastery, led by Sam Grace, who was on the attack from the start. You could tell he was locked into winning mode as he hit the rail with clean and technical peg combos. But it was his banger that shut it all down – a barspin to icepick – game over. With that flawless execution, Sam took home the $200 cash prize. Young gun Channing also got into the mix, showing promise and holding his own in a field of seasoned riders. Meanwhile, Louis Jonstone impressed with some heavy moves, including double pegs up the rail into tailwhips, earning massive respect from the crowd and fellow riders.

In the scooter session, it was all Leighton from the get-go. He was on fire and completely owned the rail, throwing down combos both up and down the setup that left no room for others to match his dominance. Young Lucas, who has been steadily growing his skills over the years, brought his A-game and was sending banger tricks, turning heads in the process. It was also great to see Jackson back at the Rail Jam again, adding his unique style and energy to the mix.
Clockwise from top left – Leighton up rail to whip off. – Really great to see Jackson back again , one of Perth’s best street scooter riders. – Josh making it look easy on the down. – Lukas following him up seamlessly. – Find the full album of photos on our facebook page here.
The skateboard session was absolutely epic, with some heavy hitters getting into the mix. It turned into a fierce and friendly battle between Josh and Bill, two riders who both had what it took to claim the $200 cash prize. The competition was neck-and-neck, keeping the crowd on edge as each rider pushed the limits of their skill. Miles had everyone hyped when he landed a kickflip down the stairs, with the crowd erupting in loud celebration. Ultimately, it was Bill who came out victorious with a string of epic moves, including a clean blunt grind down the rail and switch nollie flips down the stairs, sealing the deal and taking home the top prize.

A massive thank you to The Groundswell festival and The City of Stirling for their support for making this event happen andhuge thank you to Animal Bikes, Core/Grit Scooters, and Modus Bearings for their support, and to everyone who came out to watch or take part. The 2024 Groundswell BMX Bowl Battle was one of the best events Scarborough Beach has seen take place in the iconic Bowl. With the backdrop of the Groundswell Festival and perfect weather conditions, the day was set to be a super rad one. Riders and fans gathered for an epic display of talent, flow, and progression. The Groundswell BMX Bowl Battle followed a unique battle format competition. Each competitor had two qualifying runs, where they were scored on difficulty, diversity, and consistency. These scores determined the rider’s placement in the battle round order. The battle finals were nothing short of epic. In this stage, riders had to either battle their way to the top or defend their position against challengers. The format started with the 6th place rider taking on the 5th place rider. Each competitor had alternating 30-second runs, and the judges would vote on who performed best. The winner advanced to challenge the next rider up the rankings. This intense head-to-head format continued until the top qualifier faced their challenger in the final showdown.
In the Rad class, it was Bianca Martin who qualified in the top spot after a closely contested qualifying round. It was fantastic to see two young riders, Ziggy Ellis and Logan Knibbs, participate in the event. Both riders were 5 and 6 respectively and needed some help getting out of the bowl, but their enthusiasm and potential were evident. We look forward to seeing them riding and ripping it up next year! Additionally, it was great to see Salvia Hogan return to the Groundswell BMX Bowl Battle, adding to the excitement. The competition in the Rad class was fierce, with any of the top three riders having the potential to take the win. In the battle round between Jayce Blakers and Billy Gibson, it was incredibly close, with the judges taking time to deliberate and vote on who would advance to challenge Bianca Martin. A narrow two-to-one vote in favor of Billy sent him into the final battle. The final showdown between Bianca Martin and Billy Gibson was electric. Bianca showcased incredible high airs and smooth flow, captivating the judges and the crowd. Billy gave it his all, trying to take the win, but Bianca held her ground and edged him out in a nail-biting finish. Congratulations to Bianca on the well-deserved win!

The Raddest class saw an incredible showdown. In the qualifying rounds, the 2023 winner Sam Grace had secured the top spot, while three-time BMX Bowl Battle winner Luke Tooze qualified in 4th place. With standout riders from the East Coast, Sam Grace, Jayden Fuller, and Chris James, this was shaping up to be one of the best battle competitions we have ever seen. The battle finals began with Ben Gately taking on Brad Evans. Both riders know the Scarborough Beach bowl well, with Ben showing off smooth and fast lines while Brad delivered rad airs and epic grinds. After an intense round, it was Ben who came out on top, advancing to face Luke Tooze. Ben brought his trademark manual lines to the next battle, but they were no match for Luke’s speed and massive airs. Luke’s enormous griz air in the deep end had the crowd roaring, securing his win and setting up a battle against East Coast rider Jayden Fuller. Jayden wowed with high airs and double tricks, including his signature double euro airs. Luke put up a strong fight, but a fall on a tire slide may have cost him. Jayden’s smooth and high-energy performance carried him through to the next round against fellow Colony BMX teammate Chris James.
Clockwise from top left – Brad Evans is a regular at the Scarborough bowl, he know all the lines and knows how to air the 12 foot deep end. – Jayden Fuller came to the Groundswell BMX bowl battle with all of his flow and style and showed it all, 3rd place. – Ben Gately another regular at the Scarborough bowl, has some awesome skills, with rad manuals and high airs. – Chris James with an awe-inspiring flare over the waterfall – Find the full album of photos on our facebook page here
Luke Tooze has the best Griz airs, a crowd favorite for sure, Luke is a 3 time Groundswell BMX bowl battle winner, this year an honorable 4th was his end result
Jayden tried his best with smooth lines and high airs, but Chris James was on another level. Chris powered through the bowl with massive indy seat grabs, lookbacks, tail whips, and one of the biggest barrel roll/backflip transfers ever seen. (Check the video highlights!) It was a unanimous 3-0 vote in favor of Chris, setting the stage for the final battle against the 2023 champion, Sam Grace. The final battle between Chris James and Sam Grace was a showdown for the ages. Chris set the stage with an epic run, delivering speed, power, and precision. Sam followed with his trademark style, massive airs, backflip drop-ins, and a foot jam to fakie in the deep end. Unfortunately, Sam struggled with consistency on some fakie tricks, missing key moments like front flip fakies and fakie bar spins. Had he nailed them, the result might have been different. In the end, Chris’s speed, tricks, and flawless execution gave him the edge. The judges took their time deliberating, it was that close, but ultimately crowned Chris James the winner of the 2024 Groundswell BMX Bowl Battle.
A massive thank you to The Groundswell festival and The City of Stirling for their support for making this event happen and to our competition supporters Colony BMX, Local BMX and Sneaky Wholefoods . Freestyle Now is proud to continue fostering the BMX community and inspiring the next generation.

The Freestyle Now BMX stunt show was back in action at the Geraldton Sunshine Festival, and what a spectacular time it was! Over the last few years, we’ve had the pleasure of performing at this amazing event, and it’s always a blast. Being invited back year after year really shows that we’re a popular entertainment choice, and we’re so grateful to be part of this fantastic festival once again. The show location couldn’t have been better—right next to the beach, with the sun shining and the ocean breeze creating the perfect vibe for a day of BMX excitement. The weather was absolutely beautiful, the sun was out, and the crowds were enthusiastic, making the atmosphere electric.
Freestyle Now’s own Shaun Jarvis did double duty, hyping up the crowd on the microphone while performing his classic, smooth BMX tricks. Luke Tooze had a standout moment, landing his first front flip over a jump in many years—a huge accomplishment that sent the crowd into a frenzy! Sam Grace, a future Olympian, brought his signature style, going big with massive tricks that only Sam can deliver. It was also great to see young Oskar Thomas return for his second show with Freestyle Now, and he didn’t disappoint, bringing his youthful energy and passion to the stage.

Andrew Ahumada superman backflip to the gasps of the Karratha FeNaCing Festival crowds. The shows were super rad with the crowds makeing lts of noise and bringing eregy back into the riding zone
Freestyle Now, Australia’s premier BMX stunt show team made an epic return to the Karratha FeNaCing Festival after 16 years, and it was well worth the wait! Riders Andrew Ahumada, Luke Tooze, Samuel Grace, and Shaun Jarvis brought incredible energy to Karratha over the two-day event. In a surprising twist, Karratha experienced heavy rain just days before, leaving the ground waterlogged. Although conditions began to dry up, the rain returned each night before the shows, adding just a bit more water. Despite these challenges, the team powered through, delivering unforgettable BMX stunt shows that left the crowd in awe.
Samuel Grace wowed the audience with an insane 720 barspin followed by an unbelievable 1080 that had the crowd roaring. Andrew Ahumada brought his signature style to the show, landing smooth double backflips that left jaws on the floor. Meanwhile, Luke Tooze showcased his mastery of the BMX, throwing out 360 tailwhips and bike flips with precision. Shaun Jarvis, as usual, rolled out the rad with his skills on the mic and some great flatland tricks, keeping the energy high and the audience hyped throughout the entire performance.
The last time we were at the FeNaCing Festival was in 2007, and it was fantastic to be back in Karratha. Despite the slightly damp ground, the team pushed through and delivered an unforgettable show for the Karratha crowd, making it a true highlight of the event. We can’t wait to come back again and do it all over! Big thanks to the City of Karratha for having Freestyle Now come and entertain the crowds at the 2024 FeNaCing Festival

Freestyle Now team rider Sasha Berg released her first rollerskate edit in collaboration with Ewen Robson behind the camera and editing, and Lewis Ricketts who produced the music. This project was mostly filmed in 2022/2023 and we are stoked to see Sasha working with others in the local scene to shine a light on her skating. Read what Sasha has to say about it below.
“I named this edit “FUN” because of all the things skating has been for me over the years, fun has been a constant. Creating these edits plays an important part in solidifying an era of your skating. It acts as something to reflect on so you can understand where you’ve come from and hopefully inspire others within the rollerskate community. I am super thankful to Ewen for not only filming and editing this piece but being the one to spark the idea and encourage me to start the project. Another thank you to Lewis for producing the music and believing in me. And a big shout out to Emmi Rumsa for her skating and friendship.”
