The 2022 Street Chillz Youth festival took place at the Dwellingup skatepark on a fine sunny Sunday morning. The rain clouds were looming in the far off distance and depending on which way the wind currents were driving them would depend if it would rain in Dwellingup. The morning started with the running of the scooter skatepark competition which went really well. RJ Marshall took the win in the beginner class with a really well thought out run, his skill set is growing well. In the intermediate class it was Liam Camilleri who was shining as bright as the sun and hitting all the tricks. Great riding from both of the riders. After the scooter competition skateboard registrations took place as the dark clouds started to sweep in. This was a problem as the dark clouds dumped all there water on the skatepark. We thought we would have to call the competition off but the clouds ran away as more sunshine came out. This was good as many people got out onto the skatepark and swept the water off so the park could dry up, and it did. The skateboarders were stoked, the comp was on, until the rain fell just as it was about to start. This put a stop to the whole event and the rain set in and the event was finally cancelled.

Dwellingup skatepark competition 10th April 2022 – Official results

When Bridgetown had their skatepark built back in 2008 Freestyle Now was there to help celebrate the opening by hosting a skatepark competition, and it was an honor to return 14 years later to help celebrate the opening of the skatepark upgrade. The new upgrade is rad. It has some great elements and is linked to the old park well, which helps hosting competitions. The Bridgetown competition marked the inclusion of the first official rollerskate competition for Freestyle Now. With skateboard, scooter and BMX already on the schedule adding another discipline made for a super hectic but super rad competition. Rollerskating at skateparks has been steadily growing and now rollerskating is ready for competitions, and all the proof you need for that happened at Bridgetown, the rollerskate crew brought the hype
The Bridgetown / Manjimip area has a great skatepark scene and the crews were stoked on the competition, it was also great to see many past locals returning to where it started for them to participate in the competition. The morning of the competition Freestyle Now hosted a skatepark coaching session which was well attended and many skilled were taught along with what judges are looking for in a competition.
We need to give a big shout out to the Blackwood youth action team, Relationships Australia WA, Shire of Bridgetown-Greenbushes and the Rotary Club of Bridgetown for supporting the competition and also a massive shout out to the Paper planes store in Bridgetown for supporting the rollerskate competition. They definitely know rollerskates and if your in town be sure to stop in and check out their shop, its super rad.

Freestyle Now hosted another skateboard, scooter and BMX skatepark competition at the Bassendean skatepark. As always Bassendean lived up to its reputation for an awesome competition. We need to give a big shout out to the Town of Bassendean and the Bassendean youth services, Always supporting the skatepark. The format for the skatepark competition was two runs each competitor and the best run counts. It was a super tight competition over all the disciplines in all the classes. With three judges and three judging criteria’s when you add up all the numbers to have only a few points between places is super tight. The Action Sports Games has been a Western Australians premier action sports event for the past decade. Taking place over the weekend of 14th and 15th May at Hall Park on the Mandurah Western Foreshore. The Mandurah Mazda Action Sports Games presented by Drug Aware is one weekend you don’t want to miss. The Mandurah Mazda Action Sports Games will be a combination of freestyle motocross, skateboarding, BMX and scooter events into an action-packed weekend of extreme sports along with the Food Truck Festival and DJ’s keeping the good times rolling all day long. The skatepark will defiantly be a highlight over the weekend with BMX, scooter and skateboard competitors sharing in over $5000 in cash and prizes. 2022 will be the first time there is a woman’s open skateboard class sharing in the prize money. The skatepark will host two bowl competitions back to back with Saturday seeing the action in the small bowl and Sunday will be all about the big bowl. Both competition places will be combined to find the Mandurah Mazda Action Sports Games champion. Any ties for 1st, 2nd or 3rd is decided by a run off. Competitors will need to compete in both small and big bowl competitions to make their points count. The competition caters for participants from under 10 to the top skilled pro riders. Mandurah Action Sports Games skatepark competition judging criteria
Difficulty. Best score possible from one judge – 20 points
Definition – Tricks that are difficult to execute, Technical tricks, difficult lines within the park, Large gaps or high airs will also be taken into account.
Diversity. Best score possible from one judge – 20 points
Definition – A run consisting of various types of tricks (grinds, stalls and airs), Using the park to its full capability (tricking on as many obstacles as you can), Using the park in ways that other competitors are not (original lines through the park or tricking parts of the park that no one is tricking.), The more varied the run and the more obstacles ridden the higher the score.
Consistency. Best score possible from one judge – 20 points
Definition – A run that has been done without any feet touching by mistake or crashes, Tricks done but not pulled smooth will also come into account with consistency points, The less touches or crashes and the smoother the run the higher the score the competitor will receive.
Freestyle Now hosted the first skatepark competition at the new Balga skatepark. It was a well attended event despite the 40c heat. Competitors were told to stay hydrated and apply sunscreen, a 30 minute maximum warm up and two sixty second runs meant they were not out in the heat for long. Sure it was a hot day but nothing can stop the radness from being rolled out. There was a great turn out of competitors in all the divisions. The structure of the skatepark competition was to have the scooter competition first, announce the results and present prizes, then the skateboard competition and finally the BMX competition. This format worked really well over the course of the day. There was so many prizes at this competition that all competitors took home a prize and in some cases two or three prizes. A big thank you goes to the City of Stirling for all their support on this competition

Freestyle Now hosted Bremer Bay’s second skatepark competition for the Bremer bay community resource centre thanks Healthways and the Shire of Jerramungup. The day before the competition Freestyle Now hosted a skatepark coaching session. Lots of participants learnt new skills and gained confidence with navigating the skatepark. Freestyle Now also spoke to the participants about how a skatepark competition is judged and how to plan out a competition run. At the competition many of the participants put this advice to good use. The competition was well attended by the town of Bremer Bay with many spectators and supporters, which was great to see. At the end of the competition all the participants no matter their placing took home a prize. It was also good to see some participants entering more than one discipline, yeah more prizes. Bremer Bay skatepark competition 13th January 2022 – Official results
On a fine sunny 13th Day of December 2021 many BMX riders descended onto the Bayswater skatepark to partake in the finals of the 2021 Western Australian BMX freestyle state championships. The day was fantastic and well attended by participants and spectators. A great display of BMX freestyle skills was put on by the participants. Currently Western Australia is the only state that is holding BMX freestyle state championships and this being the 3rd one with 2019 and 2020 held prior. The competition at Bayswater was the finals in a 3 competition series. Round 1 was held at the Mandurah Action Sports Games in May and round 2 at the Groundswell festival Zambrero BMX bowl battle in October. Points were awarded to competitors at each of these competitions with the rider with the highest points taking the 1st place and claiming the state champion title. Round 1 and the finals were an even points round with round 2 being an odd points round. Check the table at the bottom of the post to see the final results and placings.
On the day of the competition there was a riders choice vote for the most improved rider, the raddest rider and future Olympian. Over the course of the year many riders deemed it to be Jake Welhan who has improved the most so he got to claim the medal for that. Well done Jake, your one footer tabletops are the raddest. Ruby Rose Welhan was the third competitor to roll out on the day and midway through her first run took a massive slam of cross bar to the mouth, blood was all over the place as she had really given her lip a trauma of great proportion. After some first aid and ice everyone was shocked to see her out there ready for her second run. This act of radness was definitely the key factor on her winning the raddest rider medallion by riders vote. Well done Ruby Rose, see you at the next competition. It was without a doubt that Bianca Martin won the future Olympian medal. We saw that coming right from the get go. Let hope that the riders vote come true and your determination and radness pays off and Bianca represents Australia in the 2032 Olympics.

2021 DownUnderGround, the Australian BMX flatland championships number 13 was a video only contest due to travel restriction within Australia. For whatever reason the number of riders who entered was smaller than past years even though the concept was changed this year so riders could submit multiple clips in their video up to 2 ½ minutes. We did get two new riders entered into the beginner class that we have not seen in an Australian flatland competition, this was super rad. As we did for last year we invited the judges, Paul Chamberlain and Joe Cicman and James McGraw, to offer commentary, competition run reviews and general banter on the final video. Freestyle Now squad member Shaun Jarvis took out the 2nd place in the expert class.
Competition format – Each judge scores each category out of 20 points;
Difficulty – How difficult and complex the tricks are.
Flow / smoothness – A riders ability to control their bike and make the combos flow.
Variety – Range of tricks, types of tricks, combinations of tricks, front and rear wheel usage, backwards and forwards. This can take into account range of techniques (spinning, turbining, rolling, scuffing, stationary, pumping…)
The best possible score from one judge per video run is 60 points. The three judges points are added together to determine the winner and place getters.
The final round of the 2021 Western Australian BMX freestyle state championships will take place at the world famous Bayswater skatepark on the 12th December. Round 1 took place at the Mandurah Action Sports Games back in May, and round 2 at the Zambrero BMX bowl battle at Scarborough beach skatepark as part of the Groundswell festival in October. Round 1 was a even points round, round 2 was an odd point round. (see info below) The series finals will take place at Bayswater skatepark on the 12th December. The finals will be a even point round with riders earning double points. The rider scoring the highest points takes the 2021 Western Australian BMX freestyle championship place. Some of the current point standings are super close so this will be an interesting competition to see who comes out as the Western Australian BMX freestyle state champion. (check standings below)
Luke Tooze went fast and high and won $1000 and brought a car. 1st place in the pro class.
The Zambrero BMX bowl battle was an epic event. Great vibe, great riding and great spectators, everything needed to make an epic BMX competition. Thanks to Zambrero the top 4 pro riders shared $2000 prize money. There were prizes galore from our supporters as well and we want to thank them heaps, Colony BMX, Sneaky Wholefoods, Local BMX, Cult Crew and Division Brand as well as the Groundswell Festival dropped in some rad prizes as well. Every competitor went home with heaps of products. The Zambrero bmx bowl battle was so rad with the level of riding from the beginner to the pros, it was so awesome to see. There were many different riding styles all interacting with the Scarborough Beach bowl. There were a few disappointed beginners who wanted to enter but were yet to be able to either drop in or get out of the bowl or both. There were a few beginners who had only just dropped in the day before they were that keen to enter. This was great to see the younger riders wanting to push themselves to ride such a mammoth bowl. All competitors had two runs in the qualifying rounds with only their best score counting. This set them up in the battle finals order. Qualifying was super important with riders qualifying first put them in prime position for the battle finals.
Be sure you give the highlights video a watch. Capturing all the radness from the Zambrero BMX bowl battle was not an easy task as there was just so much radness flowing all day. Be sure to attend next years and see it live.
The battle finals were epic with some dam fine radical skills being unleashed from the riders to make sure they will progress into the next round. Each lower qualifying rider had to battle in out against the next highest qualifier. The winner of this battle then took on the next highest qualified rider. Survival of the fittest and the raddest was the order of the day that’s for sure. Each rider had two 60 second runs to make sure they were the rider that would progress to the next round. Riders were judged on the overall impression of their run by the three judges, each giving a score from 0 to 30 points taking into account, difficulty, diversity, consistency, speed, height, flow, lines, and tricks. Each of the battles that took place were awesome, but there were two battles that were epic standouts.
The first epic battle was in the beginners, between two siblings, 15 year old Zac Martin and 8 year old Bianca Martin, brother and sister rolling out the rad and this is why BMX is so rad, no matter what age, size or sexual orientation, skill is the requirement. Zac had qualified in 5th and took on Brenton Waddingham. They both rode well but the judges gave the win to Zac, who only had only dropped into the bowl for the first time a few days previously. The 5th place was given to Brenton and Zac now had to ride against his sister Bianca. The winner from the round could then challenge Morgan West for the 2nd place. Zac dropped in first and powered around the bowl with some great lines 60 seconds later Bianca dropped in. The amount of speed and height 8 year old Bianca expressed was outstanding. Zac was then in for his second run which was the same as his first. Bianca’s next run started as a double peg drop in on the medium size transition, from there it was massive airs and great lines and good use of the hips. There were not many points between them but it was Bianca that took the win, on announcing that she was progressing to the next round the crowd let out the biggest cheer of the competition.
Zac claimed the 4th place and Bianca went on to challenge Morgan West, who had only just dropped into the bowl for the first time that morning. Again it was Bianca for the win over Morgan. This left the final battle in the beginners between two 8 year olds, two good friends Bianca Martin and Albie Liveley. While Bianca was airing the massive deep end at the tiles Albie was half a metre out of coping. It was Albie for the win and Bianca second place.
The stoke was high for all the place getters
Albie Livesley has only just turned 8 years old and is blasting like a pro. When you scale up his height and bike size that 12 foot deep bowl that he is airing to a adult rider would be 16 foot. This is a massive air. 1st place beginners.
The other epic battle took place in the pro class. Two West Oz legends, Dempsey and Aquaman. Both of these riders have been riding for 20 years, both grew up pedalling everywhere they go, in some cases they would ride 50 kilometres just to ride a skatepark, both of these riders are legends and have so much skill and dexterity on a bike they can ride anything. Looking back to when Dempsey and Ryan Aqulina were teenagers no one would have even thought that twenty years later they would be in one of the biggest bowls in Australia battling it out in the pro class. Dempsey qualified in 5th and rode first. He was on fire during warm up but a few too many foot downs and bails put him at a lower score. Dempsey did some great fakie variations which seem to be a lost art in BMX at the moment so that was great to see but Aquaman went higher had more airs and had less foot downs. It was Aquaman who took the forth place and Dempesy in fifth. Both these riders are not what you would call bowl riders, they ride all forms of BMX but they rode for the fun and it was so rad to see them interacting with the bowl with their style of BMX.
In the pro final battle 1st place qualifier Luke Tooze was challenged by 2nd place qualifier Ben Gately. After Jay Roadly was challenged by Ryan Aqulina, Jay won the battle but took some injuries so forfeited the next round and claimed the 3rd place. Luke was so fast, went super high, had trick variations and was flawless. Ben rode like Ben does, long flowing manuals and some great flowing bowl lines, it was beautiful to watch. Luke Tooze took home $1000, 1st place and a massive smile. (rumour has it he brought a car with his winnings)

Jake Welhan is a radical bmx rider and has the best one footer tabletops. His use of the bowl just pushed him up a few points for the win in the intermediates class.

So stoked to have him rolling in the Zambrero BMX bowl battle – Bianca Martin was the only female competitor and at only 8 years old rode super rad and went so high in the deep end, a well deserving 2nd place in the beginners – Levi Brown did the best one footers of the whole competition, 6th place in beginners. We hope to see him back in 2022 going higher and faster and still doing one footers – Roman Depiazzi did one of the best runs of the competition, tail whip to bar spin to 540. The combo was so clean. Roman is on a progression mission and he will defiantly be a hot contender for next year’s Zambrero BMX bowl battle 1st place position, if he continues with the rate of progression maybe in the pro class?
