Action Sports Games 2025 Two Days of Pure Action, Progression and Stoke

twitterlinkedinmail

The 2025 Action Sports Games Skatepark Competition was our largest to date with close to 100 competitors across inline, rollerskate, skateboard, scooter and BMX divisions. Tim Thirsk, Action Sports Games Director, said that across the board this was the largest and most successful event they’ve had in many years. We were stoked to have great weather conditions and awesome participation from the crowds. Families set up their gazebos and camp chairs and settled in for full days of action sports madness. Our youngest competitor was 5 years old and our oldest was 42, showcasing that fun in the skatepark is for everyone and anyone who wants to get amongst it.

We kicked off the weekend with the inline and rollerskate competitions. Freestyle Now has been working with the community to build up these two disciplines over the last few years. We had quite a few riders unable to participate this year due to sports injury and illness so the numbers were a little short. We forged ahead as we know that the presence of both inline and rollerskate is essential to the diversity and inclusion that Freestyle Now aims to uphold. Seeing these competitors in the spotlight was an awesome start to our action packed weekend. Kicking things off was Tahn Crawford who held it down for the inline scene in Perth, Tahn came all the way down to Mandruah from the Perth metro where he later had to travel back for a full day of work, his determination to be involved and excitement definitely shone through in his riding, securing him 1st place. We saw an amazing show of talent for Chloe Rose in the rollerskate open division, no matter what lines Chloe is pulling together, we can guarantee there will always be a trick in there the crowds have never seen, keeping it fresh and creative every time and this time, coming away in 1st.

From left to right – A wicked display of fresh skill from inline competition newcomer, Tahn Crawford. Tahn made the effort to rush down and compete before a full day of work, talk about commitment. – Team rider Chloe Rose always brings so much originality to their runs in competitions, and check out the matching toe stops and helmet, style killer! Saturday afternoon was the start of an epic skateboarding competition. The skateboard competition followed the format from previous years, small bowl round and big bowl round, but for 2025 we brought it together over just one day instead of over the two days. Who can skate the best in both bowls would be the 2025 Action Sports Games champion. The small bowl round was first with each competitor having two runs with their best run counting. By 4pm it was time to move up to the big bowl and run through the whole competition format again, 2 runs with best run counting. The best run from the small bowl and best run from the big bowl are added together to form the final score. The top 3 in both open divisions were sharing in $2000 with a plethora of prizes for all from Folklore skateboards, Star Surf and Skate, Modus bearing and the 4 Skateboard company.

Skateboard 9 and under mens was our largest division of the skateboard component of the competition, with a whopping 11 competitors. Young Levi Pagdanganan came out on top, skating like a bird of prey, focused, fast, and unstoppable. At each event Levi attends, we see huge progression and determination from him, we know the future is bright for Levi. Harrison Campbell Hicks and Elliott Hanly came through in second and third, Harrison took second place over Elliot. Elliot’s skills were radder in the small bowl, where his scores were on top but Harrison’s, but Harrison brought the goods in the big bowl and came away 6 points ahead. Special mention to the Howes brothers, Arie and Davie who have been making waves of their own and progressing along massively each time we see them compete. Just one year ago at Action Sports Games 2024 we saw Davie Howes compete in his very first skateboard competition, reflecting on this and the progress he has made is absolutely wild. If he can achieve such huge progression in just one year we can’t wait to see what he does in the next. Under 9 Womens saw the Harrington sisters, Scarlette and Opal battle it out for the top spot. Scarlette came out on top by a massive 10 points. These young sisters are like a pair of turbo-charged roller rockets—zooming around the skatepark, hyping up their friends, and causing just the right amount of chaos and we are here for it. Ellie Stathaki came in third place, Ellie is beginning to be a familiar face at our competitions and we are stoked to see her making moves in the community. Under 16 Mens was nothing short of amazing with 10 year old Margaret River local Jake Turnbull at the top of the leaderboard. Jake skated with the precision of a surgeon performing a delicate operation, he didn’t miss a beat. Oscar Blackburne followed closely behind, with a big bowl score just 2 points away, making it a tight competition and showcasing Oscars raw talent in a larger transition. In this competition format it really showcased which skaters have a diverse bag of tricks on both small and large transitions.  Max James rounded out the podium taking out third place with a wicked run in both the small and large bowls. Under 16 Womens saw some familiar faces with Madison Brown taking the top spot, it was great to see her at this competition and we hope to see more of her skating in the future. Hayley Norris came in second and 1.33 points behind her was Isla Curry. These ladies really threw it down and made the under 16 women’s division wicked to witness.

Clockwise from top left – Levi Pagdanganan, under 9 mens skateboard champion, steaming through the big bowl with a seamless 50/50, grabbing the attention of spectators and inspiring other young kids watching on. – Under 9 women’s skateboard champion, Scarlett Harrington getting major air over the box jump in the small bowl section. – Maddison Brown, the 16 and under women’s champion hitting that same popular spot in the small bowl, focus and determination written across her face. – Jake Turnbull, tweaking his blunt stall with a judo kick. Originality definitely catches the judges attention, resulting in Jake coming out on top in the men’s under 16 division. – For the full album from this event please head to our facebook here

Up next was the skateboard Masters, where the tricks are still big, the stoke is still high, and the recovery time is just a little longer. On top we saw Matt Brazier who has been to quite a few of our competitions, Matt put down some really technical tricks, showing off his balancing skill with lengthy nose manuals. This technical skill scored him 1st place with Jesse Harrington following 3 points behind, the Harrington family really showed up and went hard at the Mandurah Action Sports Games, Jesse is the father of young Opal and Scarlette Harrington. Jesse pulled through with a seamless handplant in the large bowl section, there’s no doubt in our minds that he’s still got it. Last but certainly not least in 3rd place we had Geoff Knibbs, another father of a younger shredders, Bmxer Logan and skater Ava. We are stoked families come down to our events and compete as a unit, showcasing that action sports fun is not defined by age.

Clockwise from top left – Masters champion, Matthew Brazier hitting the extension with style and steeze while his competitor, Geoff Knibbs gets ready for his run in the background. – Gogo Dale, open women’s competitor showing off her skill in the vert with an amazing backside air. – Hairley Roberts, open women’s runner up making great use of the extension and hitting a flawless blunt to fakie. – Cruz Evans, open mens runner up showing us just how high the level of riding was in the open division. – For the full album from this event please head to our facebook here.

In the Skateboard Open Mens division we saw the Evans brothers battle it out once again, the youngest of the three, Zen Evans came out on top. We are getting De Ja Vu from last year’s competition, where Zen also came out as the 1st place winner. In second was his brother, Cruz Evans. These guys produce high airs and very tweaked tricks. The precision in their skating does not go unnoticed by the judges and they’re always a joy to watch for the crowd. In 3rd place was competition up and comer James Rixom. You can usually catch James skating vert so it’s no surprise he killed his run in the large bowl section. In the Skateboard Open Womens we saw none other than Skate Prodigy of Perth, Mia Kretzer. Mia has taken the world by storm competing in various vert competitions around the world including X Games and Jackalope Fest, we feel privileged to see her come out victorious in her own home city. Some of the tricks that were sent were 540, kickflip disasters and the ever so rad McTwist.  Hayley Roberts charged through with second place. Hayley is another person who thrives on vert skating so it’s no surprise her second run in the big bowl was absolutely seamless, handplants, smith grinds, stalefish, backside airs and airing over the volcano. We are keen to see what the future has in store for this talented skater. 3rd place getter was Gogo Dale who travelled all the way up from Margaret River, her home park has plenty of vert to practice on so Gogo was no stranger to the vert walls of the big bowl. Her runs were so fun to watch and we hope to see her climbing the ladder at this event next year.

Zen Evans grabs the crowd’s attention, flying high over the spine in the large bowl in front of a picturesque sunset to end day 1 of the Mandurah Action Sports Games 2025. For the full album from this event please head to our facebook here

Mia Kretzer captured the attention of the whole crowd as day 1 came to an end, showcasing a Mc Twist, a new trick under her belt this year. For the full album from this event please head to our facebook here

Day 2 of the Mandurah Action Sports Games skatepark competitions saw some of the best scooter and BMX talent across WA come together to showcase their skill, cheer on their mates and have a wicked day down on the water in Mandurah. The Scooter and BMX competition zone consisted of the small bowl and the street section. We gave this format another go, we did a few years ago but not sure if we would run with this format again as most competitors just stayed focused in the small bowl. Both divisions ran with the same format, two runs with both runs added together to form the final score.

We started the day with the scooter competition and it was an unforgettable event. Each rider had two 60 second runs with both runs being added together to form the final score. It’s always wicked to see so much young talent in our competitions, we had 24 competitors across all scooter divisions and 9 of them were in the beginner section. With this much young talent coming through it makes us excited for the future of scooter riding in Perth and we are stoked to be involved with bolstering the community and providing a space to showcase their talent. Brock Look came out on top in the scooter beginner section, he kept it cool, calm and collected which is key for executing a clean line in a competition. James Deyonker took second place, missing out by only 1.33 points and Bailey Popkes followed very closely, 2 points behind. Shout out to Nuia Waikari, a local Mandurah rider who came down to join in on the radness. In intermediate we saw Rhyder Howard take out the top spot, deservingly. Rhyder has some huge overhead tricks for his division and we have no doubt he will be moving up into the open division in the near future. Cruz West and Lachlan Yeats followed in second and third, an extremely close podium with these two less than 1 point away from the top spot. Shout out to Kodi Weston who made great use of the whole course and used the street section more than any other competitor. Into the Open section we saw a fierce show down between not only competitors but friends as well as they completed for the chance to share the $1000 prie money. The camaraderie was definitely there and we are sure it impacted the riders and the runs they came up with. Mitchell Bacon took 1st place with two incredible runs, coming out a massive 11.34 points above the rest, Rufus McFarlane and Adam Pufler followed closely behind just 2 points between them both. Adam had a killer first run but in his second run couldn’t hold it together and had a few inconsistencies, later saying it was the gopro on his helmet that put him off. All three of these talented riders showed their best tricks using the box jump in the middle of the small bowl, huge backflip variations, including stanley flips, switch flips and flares. It was wicked for the crowd and inspiring for the other riders in this division.

Mitchell Bacon, the open scooter champion. You can see why, he was whipping tricks out like the stanley flip you see above all throughout his line. Keeping the quality of riding high and nailing consistency to come away with the top spot. For the full album from this event please head to our facebook here

Clockwise from top left – Brock Look, determined as ever, focused in on the tailwhip that could have been a make or break for the 1st place win he took in beginner BMX. – 1st place in scooter intermediate, Rhyder Howard capturing the gaze of the whole crowd as he airs up, over coping into a rewind. – Rufus McFarlane setting the bar in the open division, showing off a flare whip on the quarter in front of all his competitors and coming away with 2nd place. – Brandon Black keeping it original with a bar twist 180. – For the full album from this event please head to our facebook here

To finish up the Action Sports Games it was the BMX competition, what an end to this weekend of fun it was. BMX beginners was our largest group of the day with a massive thirteen competitors. Because it was such a large group we split it into two heats in preparation for a final with the top 4. After all riders had their two runs, we had a tie for 4th place, between Trey Thomas and Salva Hogan, bringing them both over to the finals. Trey Thomas then surprised us all and came 1st in the finals, climbing the ladder from his qualifier spot of tied 4th. We want to note that if Salva had gotten even .01 of a score above him, Trey wouldn’t have qualified for the finals at all, making it a huge win for him. Rhys Sockett who qualified in first came through with second in the finals and he rode consistently to earn him this spot. 3rd place was BMX up and comer Garnet Rock who has been seen at every Freestyle Now competition in the last few months. Garnet qualified 3rd and he came 3rd in the finals keeping it consistent across the day. We have to give a huge shoutout to Illay Godfrey, although he didn’t qualify for the finals he came straight to the competition from his surf life saving club where he had just been awarded club champion, straight into the BMX comp after competing in the skate under 16 men’s division the day before. Huge weekend for this kid.

Clockwise from top left – Ilay Godfey showing off what could be the biggest no footer (respective to his size) we have seen to date. – Trey Thomas 360ing his way to an equal fourth in the qualifying round but taking the win in the finals, climbing up the ladder. – Jacob Roughton, winner of the BMX intermediates showing off his technical skills by throwing a truck driver. – Open BMX winner Jay Roadley tyre sliding his way to the top. – For the full album from this event please head to our facebook here

In the Intermediate division we saw some familiar faces up on the podium. Jacob Roughton came out on top in first place, whipping out his first ever backflip in competition, he was the first competitor to have his run so this definitely set the standard for the whole division. Jacob won himself a new frame from Fiend BMX and is now moving up to the open class. Following in second place was Charlie Hill, who looked extremely fresh in his brand new full face helmet, Charlie must have had some added confidence from this new addition because his run was on point. It’s great to see Charlie throwing down some awesome Xups as well. Liam Rhoades impressed us with his clear progression, we have been watching his riding improve through different competitions up until this point and it’s awesome to see him standing on the podium. Onto our final event of this huge weekend of action sports, BMX Opens, with a prize purse of $1000. The calibre of riding in this division was very entertaining to watch and the 5 riders who entered really put on an action packed show with alleyoop flares, backflips, no handers, tailwhips and footjams to name a few of their tricks. Coming out on top was Jay Rhoadley, his lines were consistent and full of power. Showing off out of the box tricks like the Alleyoop air its no surprise he came in 1st place. In 2nd we saw Josh Dunstan who also had some original tricks in his bag. Josh threw down some classics like foot jams and tuck no handers but a wild trick we loved to see was the opposite front peg grab. You just don’t see many people doing this variation of trick. 3rd place saw Jack Carwadine, Freestyle Now’s own team member. Jack had so much fun with his lines and came through with a flip to fakie! Such a tough one to execute so to see it done and in person, no less, is an absolute treat. Special mention to our other two open competitors, Louis Johnstone and Joshua O’Neil these two brought the heat in their riding and the good vibes in all their interactions with competitors. Hopefully we can see them climb the ladder next year.

The judges and spectators look up to Josh Dunstan who came away with 2nd place in the BMX Open, flying high showing us all how a tuck no hander should be done. For the full album from this event please head to our facebook here

Huge shoutout to all the sponsors,  Colony, Fiend, Grit, Core, Crisp, Modus, The 4 Skate Co, Folklore, Lucky Skates, Old Sckool Baby, Star surf and skate who made this event possible for 2025. And of course, to every rider, family member, and fan who brought the good vibes and helped make this massive two-day event unforgettable. This year was packed with action and talent across every discipline and all divisions—from under-9s and beginners through to masters and opens. All 93 competitors brought a new level of progression, skill, and fun. Without that, there wouldn’t have been an event. We can’t wait to see how high the level goes next year when we go even bigger. Until next time, keep riding, keep progressing, and we’ll see you at the next one!

Bayswater skatepark brings all the radness into one large competition

twitterlinkedinmail

The Bayswater skatepark competition brought out some of the best action sports talent, making it one of the biggest comps we’ve hosted! The Bayswater competition included inline, rollerskate, scooter, skateboard and BMX with all participants pushing their limits, the energy was high, and the level of skill was next level.

Clockwise from top left – Team rider, Sasha Berg with a locked 50/50 grind right infront of the judges table. – Jax Lindsey getting some serious air time. – Connor Riley with a classic trick, foot jammin. – Davie Howes powering through an ollie down the 4 stair. To see the full album from this day, head to our facebok page here.

It was awesome to see rollerskate and inline well-represented at this event! In roller skate open, Sasha Berg took the win despite a tough break in her first run, where she unfortunately took a heavy fall on a 360 gap landing but had enough tricks through their run to earn them the first place. Larissa Hendry followed in 2nd. The inline open division saw Ariana Waters throwing down, taking 1st place with an insane front flip over the first jump box. Tahn Crawford and Sophia Machado rounded out the podium in 2nd and 3rd.

The scooter divisions were packed with talent. In the beginner category, Archie Edwards claimed the top spot with a well-rounded run, while Flynn Deyonker and Bailey Popkes followed in 2nd and 3rd. Chevy Smaller turned heads in the intermediate class with his fearless bin jump, but it was Luke Denison who took 1st place with smooth, controlled riding. Dean Morrison and Jayce Blakers rounded out the podium. Speaking of Jayce, his bomb drop off the vert ramp into the bank had everyone hyped! The scooter open division was stacked, with Rufus Macfarlane-Brewer putting down two killer runs to take the win. Jax Lindsay came in 2nd, while Marcus Dunlop secured 3rd. A highlight from the open riders was Dylan Mestrovich’s impressive double inward on the huge 14ft halfpipe, solidifying his place among the best.

Clockwise from top left – Ariana Waters showcasing how comfortable they are in the air. – Team rider Jayce Blakers getting some serious air time. – Elliott Hanly floating over the box jump with ease. – Bianca Martin kitting a flowy table top as she powers around the bowl. To see the full album from this day, head to our facebok page here.

The skateboard beginner division saw Eva O’Driscoll dominate the park for 1st place, with Toby Godkin and Ellie Stathakis following closely. In intermediate, Elliott Hanly was phenomenal, earning 1st place with next-level board control. Davie Howes and Liam Davie came in 2nd and 3rd, with Liam making great use of the spine and powering around the bowl. The skate open division was all about Reggo Pain, who took 1st with stylish and diverse trickery, using the park in ways others wouldn’t think of. Thomas Agius landed in 2nd, while Geoff Knibbs rounded out the podium in 3rd, on his birthday no less! Happy birthday Geoff.

The BMX beginner division was a tight battle, with Ziggy Ellis taking 1st with huge airs, followed by Levi Stokes and Logan Knibbs. Garnet Rock continued his strong competition streak with another solid performance. In BMX intermediate, Bianca Martin stole the show, claiming 1st place with a bold trick selection, including a tailwhip on the halfpipe, she unfortunately came crashing down on a tail whip over the first box but still took the win. Jayce Blakers finished 2nd, and Jake Whelan, finally returning from injury, secured 3rd. The BMX open class saw Jack Carwardine put down an incredible second run, utilizing the whole park and landing tricks effortlessly to claim 1st place. Connor Riley took 2nd, while Joshua O’Neil locked in 3rd. A special mention goes to Ryan “Aquaman” Aquilina, whose superman seat grab now officially renamed the “Aquaman seat grab” had the crowd on their feet.

Pictured above is Ryan Aqualina with a massive superman seat grab, when Ryan hits this we like to coin it the “Aquaman Seat Grab” as it has become a signature of Ryan Aqualina’s.

With such an electric atmosphere and insane talent on display, this competition proved why Bayswater Skatepark continues to be a hub for action sports progression. Huge thanks to the City of Bayswater and to everyone who competed, supported, and brought the energy see you at the next one!

Toodyay Skatepark Competition: Action Sports Shine in Small Town WA

twitterlinkedinmail

Freestyle Now brought the action to the charming small town of Toodyay, just outside of Perth, for an epic day of competition at the Toodyay Skatepark. The competition accompanied the Avon Descent and the Toodyay International Food Festival. Despite its small size, Toodyay was brimming with energy as local talent and competitors from across the state gathered to showcase their skills in scooter, skateboard, BMX, and roller sports.

Clockwise left to right – Hayden Brewer getting huge air, Chloe Rose Shacasing one of her classic knee slides, Ariana Waters with a very clean air out of the bowl and Bianca Martin doing her first in competition backflip – Find the full album of photos on our facebook page here

The Scooter divisions were full of impressive performances. In the Scooter Beginner category, Lucas Grant snagged the top spot, with Isola Croeser and Calais Blakers taking second and third, respectively. Gavin Penny also gave it his all, earning a respectable fourth place. The Scooter Intermediate division saw Jayce Blakers dominate, with Timothy Pearson and Lucas O’Doherty rounding out the top three, and Chevy Smaller making a solid effort to claim fourth place. The Scooter Open division was a fierce battle, with Hayden Brewer coming out on top, followed by Zac Moore in second place.
