Freestyle Now skatepark activation sessions – skatepark coaching workshops

Freestyle Now skatepark coaching sessions are all inclusive for all skill levels and ages

At the beginning of 2020 Freestyle Now had a very busy first few months travelling to many locations. Some of the regional Western Australian towns that got to experience Freestyle Now skatepark activation sessions included Lancelin, Collie, Hopetoun, Bremer Bay and Eaton. In the Perth metropolitan area Freestyle Now rolled out the rad at Bullsbrook, Stratton, Guildford, Fremantle, Kalamunda, Altone and Willetton. The skatepark activation sessions were, as always, fun and productive with lots of skatepark participants learning new skills, making new friends and in some locations winning prizes.

The Collie skatepark engagement session were super rad. Freestyle Now did six sessions over January. It ended with a coaching jam session for the last session and we gave away some great prizes. A new level of confidence and skills were gained over the sessions, we could see the growth in the participants and their interactions. All participants were catered for with skateboard, bmx and scooter participants being engaged. Hope to return there soon to help roll out the rad.

 

Freestyle now squad members Shaun Jarvis, Mitchell Harris, Dylan Reese, Kareece Furneyvall, Luke Tooze and Josh Garwood attended some of the sessions at various times to help others learn how to roll out the rad. At the skatepark activation sessions Freestyle Now used our two main types of engagement, skatepark coaching sessions and skatepark coaching jam sessions. Each of these help target different participants via our engagement.

The skatepark coaching workshops are for participants to attend and learn new skills and gain confidence. These can be done in a formal way, with 5 to 6 participants per Freestyle Now facilitator or in a non-formal way with many participants able to attend, sometimes as many as 50. Each of them has its own benefits. The formal sessions are great for smaller skateparks and are usually hosted when the skatepark is closed to the public (or sections of the skatepark) and gives the participants more time with the facilitators. It is a great way to control numbers at skateparks. The advantage to informal sessions is that the skatepark remains open to everyone and Freestyle Now facilitators move through the participants helping the individuals during the course of the allotted time for the sessions.

One of the aspects of the skatepark activation sessions is to show how to maintain and keep your equipment in good working order. Many participants don’t know how to maintain their equipment. This is an important factor of skatepark participation.

 

The skatepark coaching jam sessions are a fun way to engage participants with Freestyle Now creating mini-challenges and fun games that the participants can do at the skatepark to win prizes. This all takes place in the backdrop of our facilitators/coaches helping the participants learn new skills, tricks and gain confidence. Some of the challenges might be a long bunny hop, best trick, foot down, and effort recognition which is more aimed at the younger inexperienced participants who can’t do the best tricks. Freestyle Now makes this time a fun interactive experience for all participants including the spectators who can also get involved with cheering for the players in the games.

Most of the Freestyle Now skatepark activation sessions are normally all-inclusive catering for all ages, skills and disciplines (skateboard, scooter, BMX) working on the principle that when possible no one should be excluded. However, there are times when we do offer single discipline only sessions but these are normally formal coaching workshop sessions.

The Stratton skatepark coaching jam session was a great time, thanks to the City of Swan. Lots of fun challenges were done. Prizes were given out to the winners of the challenges. Everyone has a opportunity to participate and try to win a prize, even the participants who are not that confident or don’t have a high skill level. Freestyle Now has a all-inclusive policy to make sure no one misses out on an opportunity to learn, advance or win prizes.

 

At the Freestyle Now skatepark activation session’s fun is the driving factor. The sessions are informative and motivational. The Freestyle now instructors / facilitators are very easy going and relate to the participants well and let the participants ride at their own level and encourage progression. The workshop sessions are more than just teaching skills. There are many other potential outcomes from attending a Freestyle Now skatepark activation session. Participants learn about using the skatepark safely, skatepark etiquette and equipment care, this information is also given to parents through a parental information session. Skatepark activity involves a lot of body movement and participants learn about how their interaction of body movement with their scooter/skateboard/bicycle is highly important to achieve the skills they are seeking. Skateparks are a place where everyone has the opportunity to participate safely and without prejudice over their choice of discipline or appearance, this message is reiterated at every session. Freestyle Now facilitators are positive role models that participants can look up to and aspire to be, positive peer networks are important. At Freestyle Now skatepark activation sessions participants are given the self confidence to be themselves.

Freestyle Now also offers private coaching session with our squad members. These sessions can cater for 1 to 3 participants in BMX, scooter or skateboard and are generally one to two hours long. Freestyle did a few skatepark activation sessions at the Bullsbrook skatepark and bmx jumps. Squad members Shaun Jarvis, Luke Tooze and Kareece Furneyvall attended on this day and helped the bmx and scooter participants learn new skills. The participants learnt a lot of basic skills, which are the building blocks to more complicated moves.

These tow skateboards were stoked to win some goodies, like a new skateboard deck and t shirt. – The bmx session at the Bullsbrook bmx jumps was a fun time. We got the participants to do things that they normally would not do. This exercise was about concentration on balance and thinking outside of the box. – The Eaton skatepark bmx session had some great participation. Freestyle Now squad members Luke Tooze and Shaun Jarvis helped the skatepark coaching participants learn new skills and gain a higher level of confidence. Confidence is the key to unlocking new skills.

 

Clockwize from top left – The Guildford bmx jumps engagement session was a great fun time. Freestyle Now hosted a coaching jam session thanks to the City of Swan. Ronan is a rad young rider and hit up this no hander during a best trick challenge. – The participants at the Guildford bmx jumps coaching jam session had a fun time. Freestyle Now made up a challenge that had teams of three riders. Each team had to include three different levels of riders, super confident, medium level of confidence to gaining confidence. The teams had to make up a run over the jumps and whichever team that the best looking run (having the three riders jumping over the jumps) would win. On this occasion it was the “eye don’t care” team won on a runoff against the “biker dudes” (each team had to come up with a name). Ronan, Campbell and Magnum all won a Freestyle Now “Life without BMX” t shirt. – The Altone skatepark coaching session had lots of participants. Here Luke Tooze who rides bmx is helping scooter riders learn some basic confidence building skills. Jumping into a ramp and landing on the scooter deck with both feet in the right position. Freestyle Now coaches are multi talented and skilled and have the ability to cross over into any discipline. – Kareece Furneyvall engaging with scooter participants at one of the skatepark activation sessions.

 

Clockwize from top left – The Bremer Bay skatepark engagement sessions were super rad, with lots of participants. One of the challenges we held is a long bunny hop jump. In most cases we put a restriction on the run up so the participants don’t have a lot of speed. This adds a level of difficulty as the slower you go the less of a distance you can jump. This also adds a safety feature into the challenge. We all know the faster you go the harder you fall. – Winners are grinners at Bremer Bay. – The skatepark activation session we held in Hopetoun had many participants. The sessions were staged over two day, one on the afternoon and one in the morning. In the afternoon session we were inundated with participants, most were beginners on scooters. Freestyle now squad member and head coach Shaun Jarvis ended up taking a group of 20 participants and teaching all the basic scooter skills so that they had more confidence when transversing the skatepark. The next day in the morning we held a coaching jam session and gave away some prizes. As you can tell by the skatepark users were stoked. – Skateboarding has a good following in Hopetoun and there were more girls on skateboard than boys. These two girls won a Freestyle Now t shirt each from the different challenges we had set for them to participate in.

Australian Moto Grand Prix – Freestyle Now bmx stunt show video 2019

Freestyle Now performed bmx stunt shows at the 2019 Australian Moto Grand Prix in Phillip Island in Victoria. Be sure to check out the video highlighting all of the radical experiences that we had at the Australian Moto Grand Prix and what the crowds witnessed.  This was the second time Freestyle Now had performed at the Australian Moto grand Prix and the third time at the Phillip Island venue. The first time was the 2017 Australian Moto grand Prix and the second time being the 2019 V8 Super series. Freestyle Now squad members Shaun Jarvis and Luke Tooze were joined by good friends and all round radical riders Andrew Ahumada and Alec Danelutti. The first day of the 2019 Australian Moto Grand Prix bmx stunt shows were great, with perfect weather conditions, unfortunately it was all downhill from there with Saturday and Sunday being horrendous weather conditions. There were extremely strong winds and intermittent rain down pours which hampered our efforts to perform the bmx stunt shows. We missed out on just 2 of the scheduled 12 bmx stunt shows, as we scaled back the shows to match the weather conditions. Freestyle Now performed at two different venues at the Moto Grand Prix. The first was the main location with our jump box set up and the second location was a smaller show with the use of just a small jump ramp. Freestyle Now came to roll out the rad and entertain the masses at the Australian Moto Grand Prix and that is what we achieved. DOWNUNDERGROUND – AUSTRALIAN BMX FLATLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS – 2019

DownUnderGround, the 2019 Australian bmx flatland national championships took place in the home base of bmx flatland in Australia, Melbourne. On a nice Melbourne sunny day riders converged on the Melbourne Museum to compete against each other for the Australian bmx flatland champion. Bmx flatland riders from around Australia and the world converged on Melbourne to partake in one of the hardest forms of bmx riding, flatland. It was good to see a great turnout with a few international riders attending. The format was each rider having three runs, each up to two minutes long. The lowest score dropped and both remaining runs added together.

The weather was perfect and the riding was rad. This was the 11th year for DownUnderGround. Its a time when friends come together from all over Australia to ride, share tricks have good times and build the bmx flatland scene in Australia. DownUnderGround has a video contest that the points from go to the year end title. It’s a way to help get the edge over on other riders to help gain that Australian championship title.

The three most progressive beginner riders in Australia battled it out once again for the top three spots in the beginner class. In the beginners class heading into the contest it was Paul Griznic who had a great video entry and was sitting in first place. He didn’t ride as consistent as he would have wanted to and only took a 3rd in Melbourne. His progression is good though and its rad to see that passion. In Melbourne it was local rider David Rooney who ended up taking the win from Rusty Eylward-Pyko in the beginners. David was just a little bit more consistent than Rusty but both rode well. It was really good to see Reuben Pedlar progress so much over the past year. With his first in the video round and a third in Melbourne it was Paul Griznic who to the year end title in the beginners class. All three riders said they were keen to move up to the expert class for next year, we await to see.

In the expert class it was Philipp Frueh that took the win in true Philipp riding style. Second place went to Matt Spencer who rode really well. Third place when to Western Australian rider Shaun Jarvis. Fellow Western Australian rider Trent Karow had won the video round and took a 5th place in Melbourne. This put Trent and Shaun on equal points as Shaun took a 3rd in the video round and a 3rd in Melbourne. The way to work out who was the year end champion was a trick of. After 3 rounds it was Trent who got the judges approval for the win. Congratulations Trent.

1st place in the open class went to Heru Anwari – photo Stephen Pretty

The open class was tight between Argentinean rider Gonzalo Bellanti and Indonesian rider Heru Anwari. After the qualifying round both had scored 261 points, who was going to be first and second. Third place went to Sydney resident Paul Chamberlain who had a cracker first run with only one touch. To settle who was going to take first place it was down to a trick off. Gonzalo and Heru each had 30 seconds to pull their tricks. After the first round they judges could not decide, on with the second round. Still the judges could not decide. The third round was super tight with the judges taking some time to deliberate and finally the win was given to Heru. With a first in the video round and a second in Melbourne the year end title went to Gonzalo Bellanti.

DownUnderGround 11 was awesome. If you did not attend you either could not make it or you were abducted by alien creatures. Be sure to attend DownUnderGround 12. Thank you to the competition supporters Freestyle Now, Colony BMX, Sneaky Wholefoods, Anchor bmx,  ZTFFbmx , Penumbra Bmx.

Freestyle Now performed some entertaining bmx stunt shows at the 2019 Margaret River agricultural show. The Margaret River agricultural show always has great engaging crowds and this year was no exception. With the FN big jump set up for the day and with Freestyle Now performing 4 bmx stunt shows over the day with lots of chaos and madness going down. Freestyle Now squad members Shaun Jarvis, Josh Garwood and Luke Tooze were joined by good friend and all round radical rider Nathan Joson to round out the bmx stunt show performers. The four bmx stunt show riders put on a great entertaining bmx stunt show for the crowds. Big tricks were being performed and the crowds were putting the energy back into the performance, the more noise the crowd makes the more energy the performers receive. Freestyle Now came to roll out the rad and entertain the masses at the Margaret River agricultural show and that is what we achieved. FREESTYLE NOW – GETTING RAD IN THE STREET

Practice make perfect as the saying goes. But how do you practice for a bmx stunt show, work on new tricks and gain more confidence? You set up your bmx stunt show ramps in the street and proceed to get rad, and that exactly what we did. We invited Freestyle Now squad members Josh Garwood, Shaun Jarvis, Luke Tooze, Tim Rose and Taj Hamilton to come and get rad in the street. We set up the FN big jump on the street out the front of our house and got rad. We also invited good friends Nathan Joson, Daniel Davis and Kieran Ramsay along for the day to session the FN big jump and throw down some tricks, try new tricks and generally get used to hitting up the FN big jump. What a fun and rad day it was. Be sure to watch the video.

Freestyle Now BMX stunt show – Beverley agricultural show video

Back in September Freestyle Now performed some bmx stunt shows at the Beverley Agricultural show. It was a great day but very cold. Freestyle Now squad members Shaun Jarvis, Jack Carwardine, Luke Tooze,  Taj Hamilton invited Nathan Joson to come and roll out the rad. We also had Tyler Gayski and Daniel Davis come and hang out and perform in some of the shows as well. It defiantly was a great day and some great tricks went down. Freestyle Now performed at the Beverley agricultural show back in 1999 and 20 years later we had the pleasure of returning to roll out the rad. Much had changed in them 20 years. Back in 1999 it was just squad member Shaun Jarvis performing a solo flatland show at the Beverley Agricultural show. Two years later Freestyle Now got the bmx stunt show ramp set up. After 19 years of service the Beverley agricultural show was meant to the last official show on our old bmx stunt show ramp although just a few weeks later the bmx stunt show ramp was used at the Groundswell festival in Scarborough. The FN box as it is know by will get some modifications and a new landing ramp made and will possibly see another 18 years. Lets keep rolling out the RAD. Be sure to check the video.

Freestyle Now BMX stunt show – 2019 Geraldton Sunshine Festival video

Freestyle Now recently performed some entertaining bmx stunt shows at the Geraldton Sunshine Festival. The Geraldton Sunshine festival always has great engaging crowds and this year was no exception. This was the first bmx stunt show that Freestyle Now performed using our new bigger stunt show ramp. At over 2 metres tall the bmx stunt show performers can really push the limits on the bmx stunts that they are performing.

Freestyle Now squad members Shaun Jarvis, Josh Garwood and Luke Tooze invited good friend Nathan Joson to round out the bmx stunt show performers. Big tricks were being performed and the crowds were putting the energy back into the performance, the more noise the crowd makes the more energy the performers receive. Freestyle Now came to roll out the rad and entertain the masses at the Geraldton Sunshine festival and that is what we achieved. 2019 Western Australian BMX freestyle state championships

BMX freestyle is now an official Olympic sport. There are many different types of bmx freestyle riding from street, skatepark, flatland, vert and dirt but it is the skatepark style is the one that is now in the Olympics. Freestyle Now decided it was time to run an official Western Australian BMX freestyle state championships for skatepark riders. The location was the Belmont skatepark due to its openness and functionality along with having a good jump box. There were a great number of riders who entered the competition which catered for many ages and skill levels. Under 10’s, beginners, intermediates, over 35’s and the open class.

Freestyle Now squad members placed we in the competition with Josh Garwood taking 2nd in open even though he went to hospital with a concussion and new squad member Luke Tooze taking 3rd in the open class along with Jack Carwardine placing 11th. Co founder of Freestyle Now Shaun Jarvis was leading the over 35’s class but took the 2nd place in the finals and recruits squad member Taj Hamilton took the 6th place in the intermediate class

The week leading up to the competition day was rain all week. But come competition day the sun was out although it was windy, but this did die down toward the end of the day. Many bmx riders turned up to roll out the rad and to try to take the prestigious number 1 in Western Australia title. There were lots of different styles of riding going down over the different classes, some riders going wide open and some riders being super technical along with a mix between them all. All up it was a great representation of the riding that is currently taking place in Western Australia. The riding in the groups was all really close as you can tell by the points awarded to each rider, each competitor had two runs with only their best run being taken into account for their points. Riders were judged on difficulty, diversity and consistency with a maximum score from one judge of 60 points, and when you add up all the numbers for rider to be only one or two points the difference you know it’s a close competition. A big congratulation to all the riders who entered and especially to the riders who took out the number 1 positions. Freestyle Now hopes to roll out the state championships into other states around Australia over the next year. FREESTYLE NOW BMX STUNT SHOW – MARGARET RIVER AGRICULTURAL SHOW

Freestyle Now recently performed bmx stunt shows at the Margaret River Agricultural show. It was great to return once again to the Margaret River show. The crowds were excited to see some amazing bmx stunts performed by the Freestyle Now bmx stunt show. Freestyle Now squad members Shaun Jarvis, Josh Garwood and Luke Tooze were joined by good friend and all round radical rider Nathan Joson to round out the bmx stunt show performers. The four bmx stunt show riders put on a great entertaining bmx stunt show for the crowds. Big tricks were being performed and the crowds were putting the energy back into the performance, the more noise the crowd makes the more energy the performers receive. Freestyle Now came to roll out the rad and entertain the masses at the Margaret River Agricultural show and that is what we achieved.
