Bremer Bay Skatepark Competition: Epic Progression, Fierce Battles, and Next-Level Stoke!

twitterlinkedinmail

Freestyle Now hit the road for a massive 12-hour round trip to bring the stoke to Bremer Bay, and what a trip it was! The energy from the town was absolutely next-level, with the local community embracing the action sports vibes and creating a fantastic atmosphere for both the coaching session and the competition. Before the main event, we ran a coaching clinic to help riders sharpen their skills, dial in their tricks, and build their confidence — and it definitely paid off when it came time to throw down in the competition! We want to shine a spotlight on young Meave Belton who pushed herself to master a drop in on her biggest quarter pipe to date, she mastered this with help with Shaun Jarvis, Freestyle Now founder and then brought her new skill into the competition which is exactly what the judges wanted to see.

Despite sketchy weather threatening to put a damper on the day, we pushed through and managed to stay dry, keeping the session alive and the competition rolling. The turnout was awesome, with riders across BMX, scooter, and skateboard divisions showing up ready to shred. We even had some people who were holidaying in Bremer Bay come down to take part in the annual event. We have travelled down to Bremer Bay many times since facilitating the grand opening of the skatepark and it is one of our favourite towns to re-visit and experience the progression of all the riders from the years before.

In the scooter beginner division, Kelsea Roukens led the charge with a solid and confident performance, claiming 1st place. Macy Richard Hall followed closely in 2nd and was very happy with her achievement, with Jack Oppo rounding out the podium in 3rd showing us exactly how to ride bremer bay skatepark. The scooter intermediate division saw a great battle between Paddy Belton and Victor Formica, with Paddy taking 1st place and Victor securing 2nd, it was great to see victor pulling off some of the tricks he had been practicing the day before. The scooter open division was particularly intense, featuring an epic face-off between the top two riders. Scott Rystenberg and Ayden Maley tied for first place, meaning we had no choice but to run a tie breaker. It was a back-and-forth battle that kept the crowd on edge as they pushed each other to the limit in an unforgettable showdown. In the end, Scott’s precision and flair sealed the win, taking 1st place, with Ayden finishing in 2nd.

Clockwise from top left – Joel Welner with a massive tailwhip. – Scott Rystenberg Showing us how comfortable he is in the Bremer Bay bowl. – Austin Bailey hitting huge airs over the jump box. – Kai Hill flowing around the park with ease. Find the full album on our facebook here.

The skateboard beginner division was packed with young talent. Taz Johnston showcased great skill and creativity to earn 1st place, with Sienna Johnson finishing 2nd and Hunter Ramsay landing in 3rd. The skateboard intermediate division saw impressive technical runs from riders, with Louie Bailey taking the top spot in 1st, Victor Formica riding smoothly into 2nd, competing in his second discipline of the day, and Jordy Thomas came away with 3r, seeing Jordy progress over the last few years has been a treat and we can’t wait to see what he gets up to over the next year.

BMX brought the heat, with the beginners riding hard to impress. Matthys Burger claimed 1st place with a determined run, followed by Hunter Pedro in 2nd and Jacob Ramsey in 3rd. In the intermediate class, it was a standout performance with some big tricks from Joel Welner that earned him 1st place, with Austin Bailey coming in 2nd.

We’re grateful to the town of Bremer Bay for the warm welcome and epic vibes that made this event one to remember. Huge shoutout to all the riders who competed and gave it their all — it’s always inspiring to see the progression, creativity, and passion in action sports communities. Until next time, Bremer Bay, keep shredding!

The community engagement was phenomenal, with riders of all levels joining in on the excitement.  The heart of this adventure was the BMX coaching session on the Freestyle Now small airbag lander jump. A big thank you to the Laverton Cycling Project and the Cycling Development Foundation as well as the Shire of Laverton for all their support.

Beyond the coaching sessions, the crew explored rad spots in Laverton and Kalgoorlie, discovering hidden gems that showcased the diverse BMX landscape of the outback. From street sessions to off-road exploration, every moment was an opportunity for radness. Shredding it up at the Leonora and Kalgoorlie skateparks added an extra layer of excitement to the journey. Shaun Jarvis October skatepark video

twitterlinkedinmail

Shaun heading down the rail at Kwinana skatepark

Freestyle Now co founder and squadron leader Shaun Jarvis has been riding BMX for 40 years and he is not slowing down just yet at 53 years of age. During September and October Freestyle Now hosted many skatepark coaching sessions and after each of the sessions Shaun set the goal to get clips at each location. Some time there was only a few minutes to work out lines and get the clips done. Shaun explains “BMX freestyle for me is a organic process, what flows is how it is, nothing is forced. Looking at the spot and thinking how can I interact with what’s here and how does my riding fit with the location. Many of the clips are just freestyled, no set plan just as it flowed out. Some took longer than should have and some were a one and done. Over all I’m stoked on the clips.”

Shaun Jarvis – Rolling out the rad in April 2021 video

twitterlinkedinmail

Shaun Jarvis April 2021 bmx edit has some crazy moments.

Freestyle Now co founder and squadron leader Shaun Jarvis has been riding BMX for 40 years and he is not slowing down just yet at 52 years of age. In April he attended many different locations with Freestyle Now hosting coaching sessions and skatepark competitions. The premise behind the video was to get clips at as many of the locations as possible that Freestyle Now visited. In some cases there was not much time to plan its was simply ride and film. Shaun explains “For me riding is an organic process, nothing should be forced, just let it flow. It was a lot of fun filming the clips. Looking at the spot and thinking how can I interact with what’s here and how does my riding fit with the location. Many of the clips are just freestyled, no set plan just as it flowed out. Some took longer than should have and some were a one and done. Over all I’m stoked on the clips, I pushed myself a bit more than normal, took some heavy slams and the outcome is some great memories. Big massive thanks to Kareece Furneyvall and Amos Hadad for their filming, really appreciate it. Stay rad”

Rolling out the rad in the Western Australia Pilbara

twitterlinkedinmail

Recently Freestyle Now travelled to the Pilbara in the North West of Australia for a series of skatepark activation sessions. The towns of Tom Price, Panawonica, Onslow and Paraburdoo were all on the list for the skatepark coaching jam sessions. Freestyle Now squad members Shaun Jarvis and Dylan Reese invited Oben McHoull along for the ride. Over the course of the few days Shaun, Dylan and Oben clocked some clips at the skateparks. Fun times and radness was had by all. Lots of skills were gained from the skatepark participants but more importantly everyone’s confidence was increased. Confidence is the most important factor when it comes to skatepark activity. The more confidence a participant has the more skills they will learn. At each skatepark location Freestyle Now set up small challenges and played some fun games for the participants to win prizes, lots of give a ways were had.

Be sure to check out our coming events page to see where the next skatepark activation session or event is and be sure to attend.

Josh Garwood getting it flat in the pool

Freestyle Now recently headed out to Meekatharra for a skatepark activation session. On the trip was Freestyle now boss man Shaun Jarvis, Josh Garwood who was just getting back into riding after his fractured vertebrates 9 weeks before the trip after the doctor gave the all clear to go and scooter radster Tyler Jennings. Guest skateboard shredder Sam Orme was also invited on the trip. The first day was taken up by the 9 hour drive out to Meekatharra. Day two was the opening of the skatepark and a skatepark activation coaching session. The Freestyle Now helped the locals learn new skills and gain more confidence in bmx, scooter and skateboard activities, so they can have more fun at the skatepark. Day three was another skatepark activation coaching  session with more skills being taken up. On day four it was the long journey home again. Definitely was a great trip full of good times and much radness. The local skatepark participants out in Meekatharra were stoked as were the Freestyle Now crew. On the trip the crew even managed to find an old pool on the trip that Josh and Sam got to roll in, definitely a highlight of the trip. The Meekatharra skatepark is great and if you are ever travelling the 770kms out that was into the remote Western Australian outback be sure to stop and have a roll.

Josh boosting a tabletop on a full pipe that was never meant to be ridden.

Freestyle Now recently travelled to Port Hedland for a week of youth engagement, skatepark coaching and to host a skatepark competition. Freestyle Now squad members Shaun Jarvis, Karee Furnevall and Josh Garwood  were given the task to roll out the rad over the week. Skatepark coaching workshops took place at the Port Hedland skatepark as well as the super large South Hedland skatepark. It is great to help others learn how to roll out the rad. On the Monday the squad got to hang out at the Port Hedland BMX track. On the Wednesday to squad travelled out to the Warralong community and did a school presentation session. It was a great experience and we hope to be back there again soon. The skatepark coaching workshops defiantly helped many skatepark participants learn more skill which they all put to use in the competition on the Friday night. It was also great to see the Evans family from down in Perth, skating in Port Hedland and attending the competition. Cruz, Via and Zen are all rad skaters.

Shaun, Karee and Josh captured some of the radness that took place on the Port Hedland trip. Be sure to check out the video
