Skatepark coaching workshops sessions.
The skatepark coaching workshops are for participants to attend and learn new skills and gain confidence. Freestyle Now skatepark coaching workshops are fun, informative and motivational. The squad members let the participants ride at their own level and encourage progression. All our instructors are very easy going and relate to the participants well. Our workshops cover all aspects of the sports, as well as equipment maintenance and personal safety issues. All equipment is checked prior to the participant’s involvement to make sure that it is in a safe condition and minor repairs or adjustments can be made if necessary. Freestyle Now has two different ways that skatepark coaching workshops can be facilitated, formal or informal. Each of them has its own benefits.
Formal coaching workshop sessions – The formal sessions cater for a select number of participants who have registered for the sessions via our preferred online registration process. Formal coaching sessions are great for smaller skateparks and are usually hosted when the skatepark is closed to the public (or sections of the skatepark) and gives the participants more time with the facilitators over the assigned time period. The formal sessions would have 5 – 6 participants assigned to each facilitator who would engage with them. It is a great way to control numbers at skateparks. A facilitator would have in their group, participants who would be on the same level of skill. This helps to keep the participants engaged and wanting to stay focused on learning new skills. Most formal sessions are single discipline only sessions. The formal coaching workshop sessions typically consist of two 1 hour sessions. Freestyle Now has a preferred online registration process, this way we can control the number of attendees.
Informal coaching workshop sessions – The informal sessions are great to cater for more participants, sometimes as many as 60 and the skatepark remains open to all users. Participants fill out the on the day registration attendance. Freestyle Now facilitators move through the participants helping the individuals during the course of the allotted time for the session, normally two hours. Obviously the more participants the less time each of them get with the facilitators / coaches. In some cases we will get beginner groups together and run through a beginner session for them so that way we can cater for the less confident participants while still making sure the more advance users remain engaged. Most informal sessions are all inclusive catering for all ages, skills and disciplines (BMX, skateboards, scooters and rollerskates) working on the principle that when possible no one should be excluded. However, there are times when we do offer single discipline only sessions but these are normally formal coaching workshop sessions.
Skatepark coaching workshop sessions cater for all users and skill levels. Clockwise from top left – Holding the attention of the participants while explaining how tricks work to the group is important to get the message across. – Explaining how you and your equipment work with the obstacles in important for the participants to understand. – Helping to achieve the goals of confidence can be a delicate exercise, our coaches are well versed in the patients required to achieve the participant’s goals. – Time is taken to explain equipment and how to maintain it.

Skatepark coaching jam sessions.
The skatepark coaching jam sessions are great are great to cater for more participants, sometimes as many as 60 and the skatepark remains open to all users. Participants fill out the on the day registration attendance. Freestyle Now facilitators move through the participants helping the individuals learn new skills, tricks and gain confidence during the course of the allotted time for the session, normally three hours. During the course of the session Freestyle Now creates mini-challenges and fun games that the participants can do at the skatepark to win prizes. These mini challenges and fun games cater for all participants from beginners to advanced riders. The skatepark coaching jam session incorporates participants learning new skills and pushing their skills in the challenges. Some of the challenges might be a long bunny hop, best trick, foot down, and effort recognition which is more aimed at the younger inexperienced participants who can’t do the best tricks. Freestyle Now makes this time a fun interactive experience for all participants including the spectators who can also get involved with cheering for the players in the games. This all takes place in the backdrop of our facilitators/coaches helping the participants. Obviously the more participants the less time each of them get with the facilitators / coaches. In some cases we will get beginner groups together and run through a beginner session for them so that way we can cater for the less confident participants while still making sure the more advance users remain engaged. Most skatepark coaching jam sessions are all inclusive catering for all ages, skills and disciplines (BMX, skateboards, scooters and rollerskates) working on the principle that when possible no one should be excluded. However, there are times when we do offer single discipline only sessions depending on what the demographic you are seeking to engage.

Parent information sessions
Freestyle Now also offers a parent information session at the skatepark activation sessions. This is a great informative 10 minute discussion where our facilitators run through some of the key aspects on skatepark etiquette, equipment and key safety issues (for example what is the difference between a certified and uncertified helmet). In the parent information session it also explained the different ways the traffic flows at a skatepark (each is different) and how to roll around the skatepark safely by using simple awareness messages (looking left, right, forwards and backwards, not hanging on the edge of ledges and coping etc). To a parent, community member or beginner rider it might look like it is just a free for all when people are using the skatepark but there is a code of conduct and etiquette that needs to be understood – for their safety and the safety of other skatepark users. The parent information session is a great way to help people understand the code of conduct and etiquette which needs to be observed to have a fun and safe skatepark. By providing this information to parents they can then reinforce these aspects to their young ones when they bring them back to the skatepark. Below are some videos in relation to the information discussed at a parent information session.
Helmets are no joke, be sure you get a certified helmet, keep the straps in check. The safety of your brain is vastly important
The video explains the difference between a certified and non certified helmet, this information is discussed in a parent information session.
