International Scooter Association – Perth competition

twitterlinkedinmail

On Saturday the 20th of April the Bayswater skatepark was the location of the International Scooter Association Perth round of the World Series competition. The turnout was awesome with heaps of spectators all coming out to see some of the best riders in Perth and from around Australia. With over 40 competitors the afternoon was full on. A great beginner’s class went first with many of the young riders nervous, but it was a super stoked William Cathcart who took the win. The intermediate class was full. The top five went into the finals. It was a hard final to compete in as all five could have taken the win but it was Kieran Blanchard who was just on form enough to take the win. Freestyle Now reserves squad member Hudson Goodchild took out the 4th place. The Pro class were competing for a prize purse of $750. Perth riders Billy Watts and Adam Stewart were on fire all day.Billy was punching out the highest air on the day reaching at least 6ft out even doing triple bars, Adam was super tech and hit up a 6 whip over the box. The top five were heading to the finals. It was close between Billy and Adam, either of them could take the win. It was Billy Watts who took home $400 for the first while 2nd Adam Stewart took home $200 for his well earned 2nd and $100 for 3rd went to another Perth rider Jarad Colwell. 4th place and $50 was taken out by Melbourne rider David Olsen, while Perth rider Ben Thomas took out the 5th spot. Billy Watts not only took out the win but also secured himself a place in the world finals in England taking place in August.
The contest would not have anywhere near as awesome had it not been for the great support from Broden Skate, Sacrifice scooters, Madd Gear, Crisp, Apex Pro, Grit, and Envy Scooters. Check out the below edit from the competition thanks to Alex Hayward.

New Freestyle Now squad member – Hudson Goodchild

twitterlinkedinmail

Freestyle Now would like to welcome our newest reserves squad member, Hudson Goodchild.  Hudson is our first scooter rider to be added to the squad. The 16 year old took up scooter riding in late 2010 which he credits to his mates in his for getting him started. Hudson grew up in the small town of Merredin, 300kms east of Perth and when you’re in a small country wheatbelt town there is not much to do, so scooters seemed a good option.

Hudson kicking it at his now local park Belmont, Toboggan grap.

In April 2011 Hudson took part in one of our skatepark coaching workshops in Merredin, he was stoked. Then about a year ago Hudson emailed Freestyle Now and asked if we were looking for any new squad members, as we are always on the lookout for new members, something we do get a lot of. At the time we were looking into adding a scooter rider to our ever expanding squad, we just had to find the right person.
Last year in August Freestyle Now invited Hudson along on a trip to Morawa for a coaching session and some stunt shows. There we got to see how he handled the ability to coach, communicate, get rad, travel, and manage himself in a professional manner. All seemed to be well, and Hudson was invited along to a few more events and it turned out that he had the right attitude and ability to score the first scooter rider on the Freestyle Now squad.
Hudson favorite tricks are nose manuals, inwards and kickless rewinds. He likes sunny mornings the smell of the grip rubber on his hands from a hard scooter session.

Clockwise from top left – one of Hudson’s favorite tricks kickless rewind – Invert – Handplant on the subbox on the large quarter – backflip without hands on,  aka nohander backflip.

New supporter – Sacrifice scooters

twitterlinkedinmail

Freestyle Now is getting support from Sacrifice scooters and their products will now be given as prizes for the skatepark competitions that Freestyle Now will host.
The scooter phenomenon is without question far exceeding any expatiations many people had. Over the past 6 years it has gone from a small following with simple foldable, flimsy, easy to break scooters to a whole new level. With major advancements in the design, technology and construction as well as the onset of large scooter companies willing to promote pro riders. The progression of rider’s abilities has been spurred on with these changes. Riders are going bigger, faster and getting more technical. It is without a doubt moving swiftly.
It is no lie to some that scooters have not been all that welcomed within the skateboard and bmx communities in the past. This could be partly put down to the fact that many scooter riders in the past were very young and naive and did not understand the nature of skatepark etiquette. This created many problems with young kids getting in the way, dropping in without looking or simply not taking care when out on the skatepark. Skateboarders and bmxers started to feel an underlying resentment towards this new movement. What they failed to understand was, this was the same resentment that was given and shown to skateboarders and bmxers when these subcultures started to emerge. Freestyle Now thinks that showing another subculture this kind of resentment is wrong. We believe that respect should be given to all no matter what your activity is. If you want to fly paper airplanes and it makes you happy and that’s your thing then do it, that’s cool with us. We bmx, we skate, we scoot, we all get rad and ride the same things.
Freestyle Now would like to thank our new supporter Sacrifice scooters for their support with our competition prizes. Coming out of Melbourne, Victoria Sacrifice has been in production since 2011. Sacrifice is the product of the minds of Daniel Mills and Pos Siebel. Daniel hails from a bmx background, and with that passion it lead him into owning three successful bike shops. Pos is an industrial designer who has had over a decade in product development and technical design in industries like skateboarding, mountain biking, bmx and snowboarding. The combined minds of these two guys, is what drives Sacrifice scooters along with feedback from the scooter riders. Sacrifice tends to look outside of the box when it comes to products and this is what makes it appealing and stands out from the other companies that are out there.
Freestyle Now is stoked to have Sacrifice as our supporter. Sacrifice products will now be giving as prizes to the scooter divisions at the skatepark competitions that Freestyle Now hosts.
