Congratulations to Freestyle Now squad members Paul Chamberlain and Shaun Jarvis for taking out 3rd places at DownUnderGround.
DownUnderGround is the Australian national bmx flatland contest series. Round 1 of series 7 took place in Sydney on the 21st February. Freestyle Now has been supporting DownUnderGround since it started in 2008. At this round Freestyle Now squad members Paul Chamberlain and Shaun Jarvis both competed and both took out a 3rd place in their classes. Paul hit many hard tricks in his two runs, but with hard tricks comes the difficulty of pulling them and his constancy was a bit low. Paul took out the 3rd place in the pro class with Lee Kirkman from Queensland taking out 2nd place and Boteck from Malaysia winning the top spot. Shaun had a good first run but his second run was just not working until the last 30 seconds. Shaun got the 3rd place in the advanced class while Matt Wootton from Tasmania took out 2nd and Philipp Frueh scored the 1st place. if you would like more information on bmx flatland in Australia then check out the BMXflatlandAustralia website.

Freestyle Now squad member Paul Chamberlain has taken out the 2014 DownUnderGround year end Pro title. The DownUnderGround national BMX flatland contest series has 3 rounds and Paul was only 22 points ahead of Shane Badman so at the finals last weekend in Melbourne it could have been either way for these two riders. Paul placed 4th in Melbourne just 2 points below Shane who took the 3rd place. DownUnderGround has had 6 series of competition with Paul taking the title in series 1, 3, 5 and this series 6.

A heavy crash on the day before the competition resulted in a server sprained thumb which hampered his riding a bit n contest day. Shaun ended up as a result of his 5th placing taking the 3rd place in the year end title for the advanced class.

DownUnderGround the video contest for 2014 so get your cameras ready and start your flatland game on. DownUnderGround, the Australian national bmx flatland contest series started in 2008. It has gone through a few changes since then with it being 4 physical contests, but with Australia being such a big country travel to that many contests becomes expensive. DownUnderGround now has two physical contests, round 1 in Sydney and round 3, the finals in Melbourne and round two is a video contest.
The video contest concept is simple, each rider in pro or advanced classes gets to submit one contest video run, between one and two minutes long, as if they were riding at a flatland contest. (It must be unedited and continuous, no video cuts) It can be filmed on any device, quality of video is not important. You don’t need to make the video fancy or have music backing or spend stacks of time editing it. You are judged on the quality of your riding not the quality of the video. The video run gets judged using the same criteria as a normal contest, difficulty, consistency and variety. Points are awarded and these points go towards the year end title.
DownUnderGround round 2 – the video round is open to all riders within Australia keen to throw down. (Even international riders staying in Australia at the time of the contest)
1st place – Share in $400 worth of travel to get to either round 3 – the finals in Melbourne 29th November or for round 1 series 7 in Sydney January 2015) – thanks to Freestyle Now
2nd place – pedals, grips and t shirt – thanks to Colony
3rd place – grips and t shirt – thanks to Colony
Once you have your video completed and you are happy with your run you will need to submit your video to BMXflatlandAustralia.
It’s simple to do, head over to www.wetransfer.com
Once all that is done, click on “submit” and it’s all done – simple as that! Your video will be uploaded to wetransfur. BmxFlatnadAustralia we receive an email notification that your video is uploaded. From there they upload all the contest videos to their YouTube channel.
Make sure that the file size is not to large or it will be difficult to submit.
Entry’s close 3rd November so all videos will need to be submitted by then to be eligible. On November 4th the videos will all go live on the net through the BMXFlatlandAustralia YouTube channel. The videos will be judged by the judging panel (announced soon) with results posted shortly after that.
Get out there and film, nothing is stopping you. Full details on the on the entry information can be found on the format and judges page.
Last year squad member Shaun Jarvis took out the first place in the advanced class with this below video entry submission, you can look at the 2013 video contest results here.

Recently Freestyle Now was invited to the Waroona High School for a school presentation. The focus behind the school presentations is to demonstrate and to educate what radness is all about but to also provide a motivational presentation to inspire others. The week that Freestyle Now visited Waroona High School it was in the middle of mental health week and the “R U OK” program was in full swing. Freestyle Now brought in a few of our ramps to the Waroona school and set about to put on a rad show. For the assembly presentation the younger students from the Waroona Primacy school also attended so it was super loud with lots of people screaming. After the performance the primary students went back to class and our founder of Freestyle Now Shaun Jarvis gave a motivational presentation to the high school students on his past experience about “R U OK” and how it is important to have something in your life that you can turn to that is creative and constructive. For Shaun it has been BMX. At the end of the presentation the students got to hang out with the Freestyle Now squad and ask questions.
We got a few photos from the day and one of the teachers Jo Evans was rad to offer her video footage to us to post up.
R U OK is an important question to ask your friends, as sometime they are feeling the weight of problems and issues and a simple gesture of asking “R U OK” can be all they need to know you care and are willing to listen. If you feel you need assistance with any mental health issues get in touch with lifeline.

Freestyle Now squad member, Sydney resident, father of Beatrix and rad roller, Paul Chamberlain is constantly progressing his riding. Never to be content with just doing the same tricks he seems to change his bike parts to force himself to change his styles. From no brakes, two pegs, three pegs, high seat, low seat and back to four pegs, all of these modifications push him into different styles and tricks. He recently sent through an update on what’s he has been up to lately.
“I’ve gone back to a more flatland specific setup over the past six months. I’ve been riding quite a lot. Basically at least a couple of hours a day. I feel good. Working on a new style. No touching the seat (Haven’t put my hand on the seat since the 3rd of March), no pumping and more stepping up onto the tire. Mostly front wheel at the moment, but I’m always keeping the back wheel alive. Last week I hit a car at a roundabout because I went from a chrome rim to a black one and the brakes didn’t work as well. Lucky I was wearing a helmet and bag – That took most of it. Lucky escape. Get the right pads for your rim! I was out for a week, but I’m back riding again. I am heading to England in August with my wife and daughter to see my family, and planning to head to ja[an again in October. That’s about it really. Between working, riding and family I don’t have time for anything else. Thanks Stowaway distribution and S&M bikes – very stoked.

Freestyle Now founding member Shaun Jarvis send in a update on what he has been up to over the last few weeks, looks like he is one busy dude.
“Hey all, hope everyone is getting rad. It’s good to be back home in Perth. May was a hectic month of travelling with Canberra, Melbourne, Cunnamulla and Exmouth it is good to be back and riding more regularly. Travelling is super fun but it can be hard to get some riding sessions in at my favourite spot the Perth Concert Hall, headphones on and just letting it roll for a good few hours. I’m super stoked to be progressing on some new links and tricks and will most defiantly be stoked to roll them out for DownUnderGround coming up soon. I’ve been getting some of these sessions on video and making some short edits, it would have been rad to have so easy access to video 20 years ago.
I’ve been working a fair bit on getting some new ramps made and best of all finalizing the work on our trailer with a roll in for our stunt shows. Still a bit more work on the trailer to do but hope to have the roll in finished in a few more weeks ready for the invite competition in Rockingham. I got to say I’m super stoked on things at the moment with a stack of new events planned and coming up.
I am just loving riding so much being on my bike is so dam good. This year will mark my 33rd year into BMX, and I’m just as stoked now as I was then. Stay rad.”
Below are some of Shaun’s videos from his latest flatland sessions at the Perth concert hall
