Livewire jam 2011

twitterlinkedinmail

The Livewire Jam is held in memory of Mandurah bmx rider Chadd Walton. Every December for the past 7 years riders from everywhere have congregated at the Mandurah skatepark to enjoy the ability to ride bmx bikes. This year was no exception, if fact this year saw the most riding go down in a long time. In the past many riders have shown up but instead of riding many would just chill out and drink beers and do not much riding. This year saw a change with many riders riding for almost the whole day. This is what the essence of the day is about, bmxers riding bmx because they can.
Freestyle Now brought down the FN box jump and a few rails and ledges to add to the skatepark, all were put to good use. Riders were hitting everything all day, tricks after trick with bangers being thrown every so often.
Film Things were at Livewire to film the activities, (edit soon??) Leon Fry from Film Things is a downhill mountain bike rider who had a brand new Verde complete that he brought for some rehabilitation after a knee injury. The bike was hardly used and he did not need it any more so he offered it up as a prize on the day.
Other support for the day came from Stowaway, Animal, Skavenger, FBM and S&M with many riders getting free stuff from either riding hard or just because they could.
A very close duel for the bunny hop title of livewire 2011 was between Jaymin King and Mitchell Hannigan but it was Mitchell who just got it with clearing 108 cm
Many riders were nominated for the rider of the day with Jay Wilson, Dempsey, Warren Bowers and Jaymin King receiving many nominations but it was Dan Davis who received the most. For this the 12 year old received the bike from Film Things. Runner up was Rex Cubic who took home the profits from the sale of the soft drinks on the day ($165).
The Livewire Jam 2011 was one of the best, respects were given to Chadd Walton, riders rode and enjoyment was had. Many people helped out on the day, so if you helped out a big thank you. See you next year.

Shaun Jarvis from Melbourne

twitterlinkedinmail

Freestyle Now squad members Shaun Jarvis and Paul Chamberlain are now in Melbourne and getting ready for the finals of the DownUnderGround taking place on Sunday 21st August. Shaun sent in a few words and photos to share about what has been going on.

“Hey all having a blast in Melbourne at the moment. I got in on Wednesday morning and just chilled for the day. Thursday I had to head off to do a small demo at Port Phillip Primary school. It was crazy with a stack of school kids chanting BMX, BMX, BMX, BMX, BMX, for about 2 minutes, it was well rad. Then got to ride around Melbourne for a bit with Greg barns and Cal. Ended up at the Imax for a ride after picking up Eiji Kataka from Japan who has been working up in Kununurra from the train station. Friday me and Eiji had to head to the city to meet Tomy Idler who had flown in from Germany on a 25 hour flight. We all went back to Phillip Fruh’s house where we are staying and then back to the city to ride at the Imax spot again. From there we went to watch fellow Western Australian bmxer Kim Johnson play a solo gig at the Pony bar. It was so rad as he had written a special song just for the occasion called “B4 it’s too late” with a stack of Freestyle Now reference in there. A BMX moment at its finest. Tomorrow is Saturday and there will be a big jam at Imax with a stack of riders from around Australia and various locations from the world. And Sunday is the finals of the DownUnderGround which I’m really looking forward to. Cheers to all and do like ya mum said, play with the other kids nicely”

Shaun Jarvis gets the pedaleg rollin.

Paul Chamberlain get the job done nohanded.

Left – Kim Johnson playing it live, right – Kim and Shaun enjoy the good times

Manjimup indoor build

twitterlinkedinmail

Manjimup is a small town about 300kms south of Perth, Western Australia and it’s got a good tight bmx scene. Jeremy from EZ rider has secured a small indoor location in the town to build some ramps indoors for the winter months. Freestyle Now squad members Shaun Jarvis and Dylan Schmidt went down there over the weekend just past to help get the build underway. We caught up with Shaun Jarvis for some information on the deal.

The locals in Manjimup have been asking the council for a long time for an upgrade on their skatepark as it is rather below par. Instead of just sitting around bitching about things the locals are motivated to get their stuff rolling. Jeremy from EZ rider is really behind the locals to get what they are after. Jeremy sorted a used paint and panel shop for the location to have some indoor ramps set up. I said I would be keen to go down and help them build some ramps. Dudes down there want to ride so get some ramps build to get em riding, it’s that simple. Me and Dylan went down Friday night and got a start on Saturday morning and after a 13 hour day with a stack of locals helping out most of what we wanted to get done was done. Sunday morning and about 6 more hours building and cleaning up we were able to get a ride in. The set up is rad. The locals still have a few more ramps to build that will be added but as it now stands it’s a worthy spot to session. I was just stoked to help a local scene that is so proactive with bmx. Big props to Jeremy at EZ rider, locals Jon, Trevor and Jesse Potts for working hard over the weekend and to all the locals who helped out over the weekend building. I hope you guys have a stack of fun.

Clockwise from top left – Getting started with the deck – Got the quarter frame done – Quarter in place and flatbank just about finished – Jesse Potts fast plants the finished product.

Clockwise from top left – Trevor turndowns with great pleasure to Dylan – Shaun Jarvis lawnmower drop in – Dylan was so happy to be riding the spot after building all weekend he could hardly contain his excitement – Jon testing the structure with a foot jam.
