Freestyle Now

The Kwinana skatepark was buzzing with energy and talent as competitors from across the region gathered for Round 2 of the South Metro Ride and Roll Skatepark Series. This series comes as a combined effort from City of Mandurah, Kwinana, Cockburn and Rockingham. This event saw a good turnout of participants across scooter, skateboard, BMX, and rollerskate. A special thanks to the City of Kwinana for their massive support, making this event possible and providing a platform for riders of all ages and skill levels to showcase their talents.

In the Scooter 10-13 Years category, Jonathan Maiwald took the top spot, followed by Eli Stokes in second place and Keon Himiona in third. Hayden Brewer clinched first place in the Scooter 14-17 Years division. The Scooter Open category was fiercely contested, with Brazilian shredder Ian Tsuzuki Botta emerging victorious over the local heavy hitters Jeremy Clowry and Reef Morrison..

The Skateboard 14-17 Years division had young Miles Harding take first place with his impressive spine skills and ledge grinds. Ollie Hughes rolled into second. In the Skateboard Open category, Ian Tsuzuki Botta represented another discipline, showcasing his versatility. 

BMX action was equally thrilling, with Zack Ballantyne winning the BMX 10-13 Years category, followed by Jaxon Baker and Lachlan Mcgough in second and third. Oskar Thomas dominated the BMX 14-17 Years division showing his large range of skills, and in the BMX Open category it was an intense battle between Kody Strong and Joshua O’Neil with Kody being victorious winning by 2 points

The Rollerskate Open division showcased incredible talent, with Braeden Taylor, one of the strongest park rollerskaters in WA taking first place, followed by Sara McIntosh in second, both Bread and Sara are SOR locals who love to shred at Kwinana. Freestyle Now squad member Chloe Rose came in third place, always bringing the heat and the comradery, and Shae Mann coming in 4th, a new face in the competition who we were happy to see get involved. 

The Kwinana skatepark competition was a testament to the vibrant and supportive community that thrives in these action sports. Riders of all ages and genders demonstrated remarkable skills and sportsmanship, creating an unforgettable day of competition. Thank you to everyone who participated, and a huge shout out to the City of Kwinana for making this event a reality.

The Mandurah Skatepark Competition, held on the 8th of January 2024, marked the exciting first round of the South Metro Ride and Roll Skatepark Series. This series comes as a combined effort from City of Mandurah, Kwinana, Cockburn and Rockingham. This event brought together riders of all ages and skill levels to compete in BMX, scooter, skateboard, and rollerskate categories. Thanks to the generous support of the City of Mandurah, the competition saw a fantastic turnout and an electrifying atmosphere.

In the scooter division, young talents showcased their skills with Eli Stokes securing 1st place in the 10-13 years category, followed by Keon Himiona in 2nd place. In the 14-17 years category, Josh Schnierer claimed the top spot with an impressive performance. The Scooter Open class saw fierce competition with Zac James Moore taking 1st place, Cody Richardson coming in 2nd, and Ian Tsuzuki Botta finishing 3rd.

Skateboarders also brought their A-game to the Mandurah Skatepark. In the 10-13 years category, Tayah Payne took 1st place, demonstrating exceptional skill and determination. The 14-17 years category witnessed a thrilling contest, with Gogo Dale who traveled all the way from Margaret River to compete, securing 1st place and Miles Harding following closely in 2nd place.

The BMX division was a bit light on riders with only 3 competing but that did not stop the radical action from Jaxon Baker who took 1st place in the 10-13 years category with Mathiaus Dawkins earning 2nd place. Kody Strong represented the BMX open class, it was great to have him demonstrating his skills and talent. 

Roller skaters added their flair to the event with Evie White taking 1st place in the Beginners category and Priya Feazey coming in 2nd, huge congratulations to these skaters for competing in a competition for the first time. In the Rollerskate Opens, Chloe Rose wowed the crowd and judges alike, securing 1st place with her stunning performance followed by Kiara O’Leary in 2nd, Jessica O’Leary in 3rd, Suzie O’Leary in 4th. The O’Leary family traveled all the way from Geraldton and it was awesome to have them compete in our Rollerskate Open Category.

The Mandurah skatepark competition not only highlighted the amazing talent across BMX, scooter, skateboard, and rollerskate disciplines but also fostered a sense of community and camaraderie among the participants. The Singleton Skatepark was on fire as Freestyle Now hosted a sensational skatepark competition, and it was a massive shoutout to the City of Rockingham for making it all happen. The scooter, skateboard, BMX, and rollerskate categories were packed with talent, turning the skatepark into a battleground of epic tricks and stunts. With a fantastic turnout of competitors, the local scene showed up in force, creating an electric atmosphere that echoed with cheers and high-fives. Thanks to the City of Rockingham’s support, this event became a highlight on the local calendar, fostering a sense of community and celebration of action sports. Every competitor left with smiles and prizes, making it a win-win for everyone involved. But amidst the sea of talent, one standout stole the spotlight – Dave Baker, a 44-year-old BMX enthusiast, entered his very first skatepark competition. Dave shredded the park with style, showcasing the skills he honed in the Freestyle Now coaching sessions.

It’s moments like these that make competitions special – the triumph of newcomers, the community spirit, and the sheer joy of pushing personal boundaries. The picturesque town of Toodyay came alive in August as Freestyle Now hosted an exhilarating skatepark competition, coinciding with the Toodyay International Food Festival and the 50th Anniversary of the Avon Descent. This exciting event brought together athletes from various disciplines, including skateboarders, scooter riders, BMX enthusiasts, rollerskaters, and marked the first Inline skate division at a  Freestyle Now competition introducing a new dimension to skatepark competitions.

Set against the backdrop of the Toodyay International Food Festival and the 50th Anniversary of the Avon Descent, the skatepark competition added an extra layer of excitement to the festivities. Spectators were treated to a thrilling display of action sports prowess as riders showcased their skills on wheels, delighting the crowd and leaving them in awe. Despite the cold weather, participants gave it their all, showcasing incredible talent. Scooter riders pushed the boundaries, sending backflips that thrilled the audience with their daring maneuvers. Skateboarders had their moment to shine, demonstrating their technical finesse and style as they confidently showed off their grinds in the Toodyay bowl. BMX riders took the competition to new heights, especially in the open class, where they wowed spectators with gravity-defying flairs and spins that left the crowd gasping in amazement. Roller skaters exhibited their expertise, gracefully carving through the bowl with a blend of skill and style that showcased their mastery of the park’s features. Inline skaters showed off their fancy footwork with some amazing grinds, stalls and rail work. The level of crowd engagement was remarkable, with cheers and applause echoing throughout the competition. The spectators’ enthusiasm added an extra layer of energy to the event, creating a vibrant atmosphere that encouraged the athletes to perform their best. Competitors traveled from various locations to be part of this thrilling event, showcasing the widespread appeal of action sports and the passion of the participants. For many, this was the first competition in several years in Toodyay, making the event even more special.

The Singleton skatepark buzzed with excitement as the community gathered to witness an exhilarating showcase of skill and camaraderie during a thrilling skatepark competition. Supported by the City of Rockingham, this highly anticipated event brought together skateboarders, scooter riders, rollerskaters, and BMX enthusiasts of all ages and skill levels, creating a vibrant celebration of action sports. The competition drew an incredible turnout, with families and friends converging at the skatepark to show their unwavering support. The remarkable community involvement generated an electric atmosphere, showcasing the collective passion for action sports in Singleton. One notable highlight was the increased presence of female skateboarders, who fearlessly displayed their talents and left a lasting impact. Their participation exemplified the sport’s growing inclusivity and empowerment for young females, heralding a positive shift within the skateboarding community.

Spectators were left in awe as the scooter division took center stage, mesmerizing onlookers with their breathtaking tricks. From impressive spins to jaw-dropping aerial maneuvers, these skilled riders captivated the audience, leaving an indelible impression of their talent and creativity. The competition also featured an influx of talented BMX riders, including many up-and-coming athletes who showcased their prowess on the ramps. These riders exhibited remarkable control and creativity, pushing the boundaries of their sport. Some riders even demonstrated their daring by standing on their frame and seat while riding down the stairs, demonstrating a remarkable level of skill and balance. The inclusion of roller skaters added a dynamic element to the event, particularly in a close-knit community like Singleton. The enthusiasm and determination of the younger girls on roller skates were truly inspiring, as they fearlessly attempted new tricks and pushed their limits. Notably, Chloe Pizzuto delivered an outstanding performance, wowing spectators with fantastic skating skills, including an impressive handstand seamlessly integrated into their competition run.

The sunny weather served as the perfect backdrop for an incredible day at the skatepark. The friendly faces and palpable sense of enjoyment permeated the venue, creating an atmosphere of pure excitement. The highly anticipated Mandurah Action Sports Games took the Mandurah skatepark by storm, showcasing the incredible talents of skateboarders, scooter riders, and BMX enthusiasts. Supported by Mandurah Mazda and Drug Aware, this exhilarating skatepark competition drew a diverse range of riders and solidified its place as a premier event in the action sports calendar. The competition demonstrated the commitment of both participants and sponsors in fostering a vibrant skatepark culture.

The Action Sports Games competition adopted an exciting format, with competitors showcasing their skills in both the small bowl on day one and the big bowl on day two. The best run from day one was combined with the best run from day two to determine the winners and place-getters, adding an extra layer of intensity and anticipation to the event.

Rollerskate made its debut at the Action Sports Games on Friday Night, highlighting the inclusive nature of the event. Sash Berg showcased remarkable skills and secured a well-deserved victory, signaling a promising future for rollerskating in the Action Sports Games. We look forward to increasing the participation number for the 2024 event.

BMX witnessed jaw-dropping stunts and intense battles for supremacy. Sam Grace stole the show with his audacious foot jam to fakie to fakie front flip in the deep bowl, pushing the boundaries of what was thought possible. Unfortunately, Dylan Schmidt’s exceptional riding was cut short by a heavy slam on the first day, forcing him to sit out on the second day. Nevertheless, his presence was sorely missed as his fearless style and technical prowess always electrify the competition. In the intermediate class Ronan McCamish displayed his signature riding style, soaring to incredible heights and maintaining an impeccable flow throughout his runs. His consistency and skill captivated both judges and spectators alike and propelled him into the first place. 

The BMX competition reached its climax with a thrilling finish that left everyone on the edge of their seats. Nathan Freeman and Sam Grace battled it out with relentless determination, leaving no room for error. When the dust settled, Freeman emerged victorious by the slimmest of margins, securing the top spot with just 0.66 points separating him from Grace. This exhilarating competition marked the beginning of the Western Australian BMX freestyle state championships, adding even more significance to the competition. Riders from across the state competed fiercely, aiming to secure their position as the top contenders in the championship series. Skateboarding saw a thrilling mix of talented men and women across all levels. Adam Pacynko, making his much-anticipated return from living in England, showcased his exceptional skills, reminding everyone of his prowess in the bowls. However, it was Cruz Evens who rose to the occasion, dominating the competition and claiming the coveted first-place prize. In the men’s under-13 category, Zen Evens demonstrated exceptional skill and secured a well-deserved win, showcasing tremendous potential for the future. The open women’s category witnessed a fierce battle between Mia Kretzer and Hailee Roberts, both of whom displayed rapid progression and showcased their immense talent.Either of them could have taken the win but it was Mia who came out in 1st place.

Emily Palmer brought their stoke to the Mandurah Action Sports Games had some rad front side grinds.

In the scooter category, Mitch Bacon took center stage in the open class, mesmerizing spectators with his powerful, fast, and high-flying combinations. Kash Toft gave a strong performance but had to settle for second place. The intermediate class showcased exceptional skills over the two days, with several competitors potentially making a move to the open class in 2024, further raising the bar for future competitions.

The Mandurah Action Sports Games would not have been possible without the generous support of Mandurah Mazda and Drug Aware. Their commitment to promoting and nurturing the local action sports scene has contributed significantly to the success of the event. Clockwise from top left – Cruz Evans is a skateboarding machine, so much power and skill, 1st in opens mens and $500 richer. – Mia Kretzer has now got  back to back wins in open womans at Action Sports Games in the past two years. – Adam Pacynko took a hiatus from the west oz skate scene and headed to England for a couple of years but he is back and rippin it. 2nd place in open mens in. – Hailee Roberts shreds hard and took home $300 and a 2nd place.

Freestyle Now recently hosted the first full skatepark competition at the new City of Bayswater state-of-the-art skatepark. Skateboarders, BMX riders, scooter enthusiasts, and rollerskaters from all over the state gathered to showcase their skills and compete in the event, which was a major skatepark competition. The competition featured three categories, beginners, intermediate, and open, providing a platform for riders of all ages and skill levels to demonstrate their talents. The new skatepark’s challenging features, including the halfpipe, rails, and bowl, provided an exciting environment for the participants to showcase their unique styles and approaches. It was great to see the return of Adam Pacynko in the skateboard competition, after his time living in England. He amazed everyone with his incredible Halfpipe skills and unique style, demonstrating that he is still one of the top skateboarders in Western Australia. In their first skateboard competition, mother and son Laura and Ollie shared the skatepark for their beginner runs to help both ease the nervousness they were experiencing. Both skated really well and we were stoked to have them in the competition and making memories of their first competition. The competition was a great success and attracted a diverse group of riders, including a strong showing from the rollerskate community. The scooter enthusiasts, BMX riders, and skateboarders also put on a great display of skill and technique, showcasing the incredible talent and dedication of the competitors. Spectators cheered on the riders throughout the event, creating a lively and energetic atmosphere that added to the excitement of the competition. The first full skatepark competition at the new City of Bayswater skatepark was a great showcase of the thriving skatepark culture in Western Australia, and a testament to the importance of providing safe and welcoming spaces for riders of all disciplines to come together and share their passion for skating. Big thanks to the City of Bayswater for supporting the competition, we look forward to seeing what the future holds for the skatepark community in the area.
