The Singleton skatepark buzzed with excitement as the community gathered to witness an exhilarating showcase of skill and camaraderie during a thrilling skatepark competition. Supported by the City of Rockingham, this highly anticipated event brought together skateboarders, scooter riders, rollerskaters, and BMX enthusiasts of all ages and skill levels, creating a vibrant celebration of action sports. The competition drew an incredible turnout, with families and friends converging at the skatepark to show their unwavering support. The remarkable community involvement generated an electric atmosphere, showcasing the collective passion for action sports in Singleton. One notable highlight was the increased presence of female skateboarders, who fearlessly displayed their talents and left a lasting impact. Their participation exemplified the sport’s growing inclusivity and empowerment for young females, heralding a positive shift within the skateboarding community.

Spectators were left in awe as the scooter division took center stage, mesmerizing onlookers with their breathtaking tricks. From impressive spins to jaw-dropping aerial maneuvers, these skilled riders captivated the audience, leaving an indelible impression of their talent and creativity. The competition also featured an influx of talented BMX riders, including many up-and-coming athletes who showcased their prowess on the ramps. These riders exhibited remarkable control and creativity, pushing the boundaries of their sport. Some riders even demonstrated their daring by standing on their frame and seat while riding down the stairs, demonstrating a remarkable level of skill and balance. The inclusion of roller skaters added a dynamic element to the event, particularly in a close-knit community like Singleton. The enthusiasm and determination of the younger girls on roller skates were truly inspiring, as they fearlessly attempted new tricks and pushed their limits. Notably, Chloe Pizzuto delivered an outstanding performance, wowing spectators with fantastic skating skills, including an impressive handstand seamlessly integrated into their competition run.

The sunny weather served as the perfect backdrop for an incredible day at the skatepark. The friendly faces and palpable sense of enjoyment permeated the venue, creating an atmosphere of pure excitement. The highly anticipated Mandurah Action Sports Games took the Mandurah skatepark by storm, showcasing the incredible talents of skateboarders, scooter riders, and BMX enthusiasts. Supported by Mandurah Mazda and Drug Aware, this exhilarating skatepark competition drew a diverse range of riders and solidified its place as a premier event in the action sports calendar. The competition demonstrated the commitment of both participants and sponsors in fostering a vibrant skatepark culture.

The Action Sports Games competition adopted an exciting format, with competitors showcasing their skills in both the small bowl on day one and the big bowl on day two. The best run from day one was combined with the best run from day two to determine the winners and place-getters, adding an extra layer of intensity and anticipation to the event.

Rollerskate made its debut at the Action Sports Games on Friday Night, highlighting the inclusive nature of the event. Sash Berg showcased remarkable skills and secured a well-deserved victory, signaling a promising future for rollerskating in the Action Sports Games. We look forward to increasing the participation number for the 2024 event.

BMX witnessed jaw-dropping stunts and intense battles for supremacy. Sam Grace stole the show with his audacious foot jam to fakie to fakie front flip in the deep bowl, pushing the boundaries of what was thought possible. Unfortunately, Dylan Schmidt’s exceptional riding was cut short by a heavy slam on the first day, forcing him to sit out on the second day. Nevertheless, his presence was sorely missed as his fearless style and technical prowess always electrify the competition. In the intermediate class Ronan McCamish displayed his signature riding style, soaring to incredible heights and maintaining an impeccable flow throughout his runs. His consistency and skill captivated both judges and spectators alike and propelled him into the first place. 

The BMX competition reached its climax with a thrilling finish that left everyone on the edge of their seats. Nathan Freeman and Sam Grace battled it out with relentless determination, leaving no room for error. When the dust settled, Freeman emerged victorious by the slimmest of margins, securing the top spot with just 0.66 points separating him from Grace. This exhilarating competition marked the beginning of the Western Australian BMX freestyle state championships, adding even more significance to the competition. Riders from across the state competed fiercely, aiming to secure their position as the top contenders in the championship series. Skateboarding saw a thrilling mix of talented men and women across all levels. Adam Pacynko, making his much-anticipated return from living in England, showcased his exceptional skills, reminding everyone of his prowess in the bowls. However, it was Cruz Evens who rose to the occasion, dominating the competition and claiming the coveted first-place prize. In the men’s under-13 category, Zen Evens demonstrated exceptional skill and secured a well-deserved win, showcasing tremendous potential for the future. The open women’s category witnessed a fierce battle between Mia Kretzer and Hailee Roberts, both of whom displayed rapid progression and showcased their immense talent.Either of them could have taken the win but it was Mia who came out in 1st place.

Emily Palmer brought their stoke to the Mandurah Action Sports Games had some rad front side grinds.

In the scooter category, Mitch Bacon took center stage in the open class, mesmerizing spectators with his powerful, fast, and high-flying combinations. Kash Toft gave a strong performance but had to settle for second place. The intermediate class showcased exceptional skills over the two days, with several competitors potentially making a move to the open class in 2024, further raising the bar for future competitions.

The Mandurah Action Sports Games would not have been possible without the generous support of Mandurah Mazda and Drug Aware. Their commitment to promoting and nurturing the local action sports scene has contributed significantly to the success of the event. Freestyle Now recently hosted the first full skatepark competition at the new City of Bayswater state-of-the-art skatepark. Skateboarders, BMX riders, scooter enthusiasts, and rollerskaters from all over the state gathered to showcase their skills and compete in the event, which was a major skatepark competition. The competition featured three categories, beginners, intermediate, and open, providing a platform for riders of all ages and skill levels to demonstrate their talents. The new skatepark’s challenging features, including the halfpipe, rails, and bowl, provided an exciting environment for the participants to showcase their unique styles and approaches. It was great to see the return of Adam Pacynko in the skateboard competition, after his time living in England. He amazed everyone with his incredible Halfpipe skills and unique style, demonstrating that he is still one of the top skateboarders in Western Australia. In their first skateboard competition, mother and son Laura and Ollie shared the skatepark for their beginner runs to help both ease the nervousness they were experiencing. Both skated really well and we were stoked to have them in the competition and making memories of their first competition. The competition was a great success and attracted a diverse group of riders, including a strong showing from the rollerskate community. The scooter enthusiasts, BMX riders, and skateboarders also put on a great display of skill and technique, showcasing the incredible talent and dedication of the competitors. Spectators cheered on the riders throughout the event, creating a lively and energetic atmosphere that added to the excitement of the competition. The first full skatepark competition at the new City of Bayswater skatepark was a great showcase of the thriving skatepark culture in Western Australia, and a testament to the importance of providing safe and welcoming spaces for riders of all disciplines to come together and share their passion for skating. Big thanks to the City of Bayswater for supporting the competition, we look forward to seeing what the future holds for the skatepark community in the area. Freestyle Now hosted a skatepark competition at Balga skatepark. The skatepark competition catered for all skatepark users, scooter, skateboard, BMX and rollerskates. It was a radical day full of highly skilled riders showing their abilities. Lots of prizes were given out to the competitors with some competitors entering more than one discipline and winning more prizes. Since 2011, the Action Sports Games has been the ultimate event for Western Australian action sports fans, and Mandurah provides the perfect backdrop with its stunning beaches, breathtaking inland waterways brimming with wildlife, and an epic skatepark that’s just waiting for this kind of competition. The Mandurah Mazda Action Sports Games presented by Drug Aware will be held from the 17th to the 19th of March at Hall Park on the Mandurah Western Foreshore, and it promises to be an unmissable event. Featuring wakeboarding, freestyle motocross, skateboarding, BMX, scooter, and, for the first time, rollerskating events, this action-packed weekend of extreme sports has something for everyone. The wakeboarding competition will take place over two days on Mandjar Bay, with freestyle motocross demos happening throughout the day. The skateboard, scooter, BMX, and rollerskate competitions will undoubtedly be a highlight, with top competitors battling it out for over $4000 in prize money and prizes. The BMX competition will be round 1 of 3 rounds for the Western Australian BMX freestyle championships, so you can expect some great riding from the BMX crews. Competitors of all ages and skill levels can enter a range of classes, including pro classes with cash prizes on the line. Don’t miss out on this thrilling weekend of non-stop action and fun at the Mandurah Mazda Action Sports Games presented by Drug Aware. Join us and witness Western Australia’s best action sports athletes as they compete in one of the most stunning settings in the state!

Kicking off on the evening of Friday, March 17th, the skatepark action begins with the rollerskate competition, included for the first time ever. On Saturday, March 18th, round 1 of the Action Sports Games begins with the small bowl competition, with BMX leading the way before moving onto the scooter competition and finishing up with the skateboard competition. Sunday, March 19th is all about round 2 and the big bowl. The morning starts with the scooter competition, followed by skateboarding in the mid-afternoon and BMX in the evening as the sun sets. This is set to be an epic weekend of non-stop action that you won’t want to miss. COMPETITION FORMAT – Each competitor gets 2 x 1 minute individual run on both days.(except beginners in scooter and BMX). Your best run counts for your score (highest points win). Both competition places will be combined to find the Mandurah Mazda Action Sports Games champion. Any ties for 1st, 2nd or 3rd is decided by a run off.

JUDGING CRITERIA – There are 3 judges to award points according to the judging criteria

• Difficulty. Best score possible from one judge – 20 points
• Definition – Tricks that are difficult to execute, Technical tricks, difficult lines within the park, large gaps or high airs will also be taken into account
• Diversity. Best score possible from one judge – 20 points
• Definition – A run consisting of various types of tricks (grinds, stalls and airs), Using the park to its full capability (tricking on as many obstacles as you can), Using the park in ways that other competitors are not (original lines through the park or tricking parts of the park that no one is tricking.), The more varied the run and the more obstacles ridden the higher the score.
• Consistency. Best score possible from one judge – 20 points
• Definition – A run that has been done without any feet touching by mistake or crashes. Tricks done but not pulled smooth will also come into account with consistency points, the less touches or crashes and the smoother the run the higher the score the competitor will receive.

Freestyle Now hosted a skatepark competition at the Cooloongup skatepark thanks to the City of Rockingham. What a super fun event with a good range of participants in skateboard, scooter, rollerskates and BMX out to get rad. For many competitors it was their first time being in a competition and were nervous. Relax and breath and just focus on your riding it the best advice for new comers into competitions, and remember the more competitions you do the more relaxed you get with them. You’re not out to win the competition but out to do the best you can and feel you did a good run. Thank you to all who attended.

Clockwise from top left – Arya Powell took second in the intermediate skateboard, it had been their first competition entered in over 2 years and they were a little nervous, but just relaxing and breathing through it they had two solid runs – Brendan Taylor took some time off from studying to have a roll at the Cooloongup competition and took the first place in the rollerskating division, it’s always a pleasure to see him skate – Dempesy rode BMX and did radical maneuvers, just like Dempsey does – Sampson Martin was the only scooter beginner in the competition but that did not waver his determination and you can tell by his tongue out riding style.

When Bridgetown had their skatepark built back in 2008 Freestyle Now was there to help celebrate the opening by hosting a skatepark competition, and it was an honor to return 14 years later to help celebrate the opening of the skatepark upgrade. The new upgrade is rad. It has some great elements and is linked to the old park well, which helps hosting competitions. The Bridgetown competition marked the inclusion of the first official rollerskate competition for Freestyle Now. With skateboard, scooter and BMX already on the schedule adding another discipline made for a super hectic but super rad competition. Rollerskating at skateparks has been steadily growing and now rollerskating is ready for competitions, and all the proof you need for that happened at Bridgetown, the rollerskate crew brought the hype

The Bridgetown / Manjimip area has a great skatepark scene and the crews were stoked on the competition, it was also great to see many past locals returning to where it started for them to participate in the competition. The morning of the competition Freestyle Now hosted a skatepark coaching session which was well attended and many skilled were taught along with what judges are looking for in a competition.

We need to give a big shout out to the Blackwood youth action team, Relationships Australia WA, Shire of Bridgetown-Greenbushes and the Rotary Club of Bridgetown for supporting the competition and also a massive shout out to the Paper planes store in Bridgetown for supporting the rollerskate competition. They definitely know rollerskates and if your in town be sure to stop in and check out their shop, its super rad.

We would also like to thank all the competitors for attending and making the event as rad as it was.
