Shaun Jarvis looks back on 2012

twitterlinkedinmail

Freestyle Now head honcho Shaun Jarvis hits us up with some of the highlights that was 2012.

A happy new year to all. 2013 will be another year of good times and unlimited radness. Looking back on 2012 Freestyle Now had some awesome adventures, busted out some amazing stunt shows, hosted a stack of competitions and helped a vast amount of bmxers, skateboarders and scooters learn new tricks and skills at coaching workshops. I thought I would hit up some of the highlights that made 2012 an awesome year.
In January Freestyle Now hit up Australia Day with some stunt shows. It was one of the hottest days Perth had seen for a long time, it was scorching. Later in the afternoon a thunderstorm came through and we got to see the fireworks go off while a lighting storm took place, something you don’t get to see to often.
February saw Paul Chamberlain, Jason Parker and I compete at the DownUnderGround in Sydney. It was a small contest but it was a time I got to hang out with good friends. Check the video below. I also got to film a small edit while in Sydney during sunrise, something I was wanting to do for a few years.

March was massive with lots of stunt shows and heaps of competitions including the Eyres Mandurah Action Sports Games. The competition was the biggest Western Australia has seen with $20000 prize money in BMX and skateboard. Madness was unleashed on that weekend. And it’s all set to roll out again this year, yeah its building in a large way, so make sure your there to compete or as a spectator. The Joondalup Huckfest also took place for the last time. After a 14 year history with the Joondalup festival, with a change of festival site the competition has had to take a backseat, although anything could happen in the future. The 2012 video is below.

April was full of coaching sessions and competitions. It’s good to see so many people getting into it and rolling out. It doesn’t matter if its skate, scoot or bmx, getting out and hitting it up is what is the most important thing.
May was one of the best months for travel. We got to travel up to Port Hedland for the Port Bound festival to perform some bmx stunt shows. From there we got to travel up to Derby and do a few coaching sessions there. (web post 1) (web post 2) The trip was 10 days long and one of the best trips I’ve been on. Billy Brooks and Dylan Schmidt and I traveled to some awesome spots and got to see some of the most magnificent country side, it was straight up awesome. I feel privileged to have been able to travel and see all the things we got to see. Billy set out to document the trip and the below video sums up the trip perfectly.

In June I travelled to Darwin with Billy Brooks to host a competition at the Palmerston skatepark. Darwin is such a rad place and again we got to see some amazing country side and ride some good spots and hang with some good crew. Again Billy captured some video from the trip.

July once again had travel on the agenda. It was back up to Port Hedland and Karratha for some coaching sessions and to host round 13 of the Freestyle Now Western Australian Skatepark Series. I also headed over to Mt Isa with David Pinelli and Billy Brooks a host a competition and coaching sessions. From there I spent a week with David Pinelli in the Brisbane area hitting up a few skateparks and generally having a riding holiday.
August saw a few coaching sessions and stunt shows, but the best was the stunt shows we hit up over in Brisbane for the Eagle Farm race day. David Pinelli and I travelled over there for a few days. It was a fun day of demos.
September we were off to Darwin again to host another competition at the Palmerston skatepark. This time Dylan and Billy headed up there with me. And as always we had an awesome trip, the competition was really good with everyone being super stoked. Check the below video to see some of the good times.

In October Freestyle Now was back at the Perth Royal Show. 8 days of stunt shows. Straight up awesome with so many good riders joining in the shows over the 8 days. At the end of October we hosted round 19 of the Freestyle Now Western Australian Skatepark Series at the Kwinana Feakfest, the last one in the series.
November was again a full month. Early in the month we headed to Albany for the Albany Agricultural show. Two days of bmx stunt shows turned into one day of some awesome shows and a second day of just sitting around board as it was pouring down with rain. Then later in the month I travelled over to Melbourne to compete in the DownUnderGround contest again. Jason Parker also came along. He took out the 1st and I took the 2nd place in the advanced class.

Shaun hitting the wall at the Erindale skatepark in Canberra – Photo Billy Brooks

In December I travelled from Melbourne straight to Sydney as Paul Chamberlain and Billy Brooks were heading with me to Canberra as we were hosting a competition at the Tuggeranong skatepark. The trip to Canberra and back to Sydney was too fast but sometimes that’s what happens. I finally got home after another 10 days away, exhausted from riding so much. In mid December the Livewire jam took place and Brady Thomas got a cool photo during the bunny hop comp.

The past few weeks has been good, as I’ve not had too much to do so I’ve been hitting up some flatland and getting ready to head to Sydney to compete at round 1 of the DownUnderGround in mid January.
2013 will be a great year with so many good things already planned. It can be hard to fathom sometimes that Freestyle Now is moving through its 26th year of operations. I would like to thank all of our squad members as they are what makes Freestyle Now. Without them we most definitely could not get as rad. Enjoy 2013.
