Paul Chamberlain update

Freestyle Now squad member and all proud dad Paul Chamberlain has been on a bit of a vacation this past week, he sent in this quick update.
“Took a week off to go up the coast with my family in camper. Have been driving around inland for a few days. Stayed up by Mount Warning the past two nights. Down in Brunswick Heads at the moment. Chilling. I’m cooking two large mullet that I got from a fisherman tonight despite the fact that I don’t eat fish anymore. They’ll all enjoy it though. I’m pretty good at cooking the old seafood. It’s in my salty blood. I met Jaspa Palffy, a scooter rider at Bellingen skatepark and he asked if he could film me. Less than 24 hours later I had an edit online!”

Freestyle Now at DownUnderGround

twitterlinkedinmail

Freestyle Now squad members Paul Chamberlain and Shaun Jarvis attended the recent DownUnderGround flatland contest in Melbourne over the weekend. This contest was the finals of the 5th series. Heading into the contest Shaun was two points behind for the year end title in the advanced class while Paul was almost guaranteed the year end title in the pro class. The two riders rode well during the contest with both hitting up some of their harder combos and links. Shaun had a few bike problems during his runs which held him back from being a consistent as he wanted which resulted in a 3rd place in the advanced class behind Tasmanian Matt Wootton and 1st place getter André from Melbourne. As a result Shaun ended up with the 2nd place in the overall year end title. Paul rode well in the pro class and smashed out some great combos for the 2nd place, but a few inconstant links may have been his demise in taking the win from Australian flatland heavy hitter Shane Badman. Paul ended up taking the number one year end title in the Pro class. Congratulations to both riders and no doubt both riders will represent Freestyle Now well in Sydney for round 1 of series 6 of DownUnderGround which is set to take place on the 18th January 2014.

Freestyle Now squad member Paul Chamberlain has recently become a father. What better way to celebrate his new found fatherhood than to invite his younger brother out from England to Sydney. Paul’s younger brother Carlos is new to bmx and with Paul’s very dry wit and sarcasm was helping his younger sibling get around their local skatepark, Dulwich Hill. This video was shot in an afternoon by good friend Will Herrmann. Make yourself a cup of England’s fines tea and enjoy the sarcasm of Paul Chamberlain.

Paul Chamberlain update

twitterlinkedinmail

Freestyle Now squad member Paul Chamberlain has been living large in his home city of Sydney. Coming off from his trip in New Zealand earlier this year, he and his wife Jen are now proud parents of a healthy baby girl, Beatrix Keates Steingraeber Chamberlain. Paul sent in an update of what he has been up to lately, read on…..

Paul in New Zealand hitting up some hitch hiker action.

“What can I say, I’m now a father and pretty happy about that. Beatrix is perfect. Coming up to Beatrix arriving I have been busy. Lots of riding. Putting a lot of time and thought into my teaching and developing new curriculum and revising the method that I use for teaching pronunciation. Finished off the current course on Thursday and have been compiling and organising materials. Sounds boring, but for me it’s actually pretty interesting and exciting to think that I’ll have a lot of gold teaching material in the bank for subsequent courses.
I’ve been listening to a lot of heavy metal recently. Particularly viking, pagan and folk metal. The adventures of Youtube recommends put me onto a Latvian band called Skyforger a couple of months ago. They’re awesome. I use to only listen to blues music, but times change I guess. Not sure how much I can learn from the Norse Gods about childbirth, but it’s a bit late now.
I have ridden a lot over the past year. Haven’t had more than 2 days without riding, which I’m stoked about. Touch wood. We moved in to a new house a while ago with a small garage, and I now got it ready for some riding, 20 minute sessions between domestic bliss and fatherhood. Moving more towards a less flowing, more technical kind of style with some changes of direction. Got plenty of ideas brewing in the garage to unleash on bigger spaces. I’ve found that listening to music motivates me a lot when I’m in the garage too. When I’m outside I don’t need it because things are happening.
I guess that’s all. I’ve been shooting a few pictures just like everybody else. Bought an interesting leather jacket today and drank 2 coffees. Did some trains at Dulwich Hill skatepark with Brodie Butterlegs.
I’ve just reread this and it’s heaps weird. It’s like a 55 year old single man’s conversation with his beloved Scottish terrier. Time for another tea and a lamington.

Clockwise from top left – Paul’s bike with new bars ready for the garage sessions – One of Paul’s students drew a picture of Paul on the white board, nice work – Paul in the latest issue of 2020 bmx mag, story from his trip in new Zealand (go and get yourself a copy) – Some more riding in New Zealand.

Paul Chamberlain update

twitterlinkedinmail

Freestyle Now squad member and good friend to thousands Paul Chamberlain, sent through a rad update on what’s been going on in is realm lately. This update comes fresh off the back of his epic road trip of New Zealand with Billy Brooks. Read on and get stoked.

“First up I got to say that I’m so stoked to hear that long-time squad gypsy Ben Moran is riding once again so I thought I would drop an update. I’ve just thrown an edit together for S&M. It’s a pretty ghetto production, but it’s all phone on the floor stuff from when I was feeling a trick over the past few months. Check it

So, fresh back from NZ. I changed a lot there. Still going strong with the vegetarianism. Haven’t missed eating meat or fish at all. It’s been cool. After riding and camping at Gorge Road dirt jumps in New Zealand for over a week I want to ride more trails and hit some pump and race tracks now. It was a really good experience to hit jumps for the first time in over ten years. So much fun just hanging in Queenstown with the locals too.

The old bike doubling up as a washing line. Still running all the same parts. Just a change of frame.

I’ve been really busy lately, moving house to Marrickville, riding, working, getting things ready for the baby and looking after my wife, Jen, as she gets bigger as well as still trying to do stuff for 2020 bmx magazine. It is only 10 weeks now until our baby is born. Everything’s fine though. I feel totally ready and Jen is really happy. Might get to make another edit before, but I’ll probably hold out until the end of the year so there’s a bit of diversity in there. It feels more natural that way too. I never go out just to get clips, it feels weird, prefer just to see what happens and how the day unfolds.

The new ride, S&M Intrikat XL (20.5″ toptube) at the new local, Dulwich Hill skatepark. I live around the corner and it’s getting an upgrade!

As far as riding my goes, my right foot started hurting after Japan so I started messing with more pegs and doing more left footed stuff again. I’m set on 3 pegs now because I like whiplashes too much to not do them. If you watch my video you’ll see that I have a back brake with a straight cable. It’s an odd choice of setup for a flatlander, but I like it for two reasons. Firstly, it’s cool to think about winding up the cable then unwinding it completely before I finish a combo. Secondly, it stops me from doing multiples of the same trick in a row. I thought it was the two pegs that was doing it for me, but it was really the straight cable that was driving the change in my style. I don’t really pump anymore. I’m mostly just rolling slowly. It’s a new method, a new challenge. I’m happy to be learning and changing as a rider.
Anyway! Peace!”

Paul and Bill rode New Zealand

twitterlinkedinmail

Freestyle Now squad members Paul Chamberlain and Billy Brooks along with good friend Kit McKenna, recently did a road trip of great proportion. They had been talking about it for months, to cycle from Christchurch to Queenstown in New Zealand, a journey just under 500kilomerters. Billy being the videographer that he is has put together this great edit of the trip, highlighting all the goodness that could only be done on such an epic adventure. Upon their return both Paul and Bill had destroyed their rear hubs, a small price to pay for such a good time. Paul sent in a few updates of the trip that you can check. Update 1. Update 2. Update 3

Paul and Bill still riding New Zealand

twitterlinkedinmail

Freestyle Now squad members Paul Chamberlain and Billy Brooks are still on their  riding adventure with all round good friend Kit McKenna. The trio have now made it from Christchurch to Queenstown. A 240 kilometre ride.  Their last day from Cromwell to Queenstown was a bit hard with a strong head wind most of the way. Arriving in Queenstown to it being really cold with some snow (in February?)  The guys have been busy with riding downhill mountain bikes, swimming and riding the skatepark. They also have been riding the famous Gorge trails, what Queenstown is known for. “Bill’s been killing the bowl and Kit’s been grinding everything he sees. I’ve dropped the odd flatland trick here and there, but you’ll have to wait for the video to see it all”Paul Chamberlain.

We stayed on more night there and made it to Queenstown the next day” – Paul Chamberlain – The 135km ride from Twizel to Cromwell through the Lindis Pass in blazing heat. – Laundry day
