Mandurah Action Sports Games – Skateboard Park

twitterlinkedinmail

The 2014 Mandurah Action Sports Games was one of Australia’s largest Action sports events. About 120000 people attended the event over the two days. The event host a round of the International Waterski & Wakeboard Federation worlds cup along with skateboard, scooter and bmx competitions and so much more over the two days. The skateboard, scooter and bmx competitors for 2014 were competing for $20000 prize money. The skateboard park competition was insane. On the Saturday the competitors went through the qualifying round in the hope to make it to the finals on Sunday for their share in the $4250 prize money.
On Sunday 9 competitors went into the quarter finals with 3 groups of 3 having a 5 minute jam to smash out some skating. From the top nine it was taken down to the top 6 for the semi finals. It was a tough competition to judge as the skill level was insane with all skaters having different styles and flow. In the semis the competitors really pushed it and used many of the various portable ramps in the hope to help gain more points in difficulty and diversity. Issa Hassan was showing good form and was having lots of fun with 6th. Connor Harrington is moving on up in the skate world and at Mandurah he showed why. Great still, consistent and good use of the skatepark 5th. Harry Clark took 4th place. Harry is the goods and skates so well, but just could not get into the top 3 that is how close the competition was. In the finals it was looking as if Dylan Tomlinson was going to take the win, but with a broken board from the semis he was on a borrowed board in the finals. It must have messed with things as he was killing out there but just not as consistent as in all the other rounds, 3rd place. Joe Bothams was on a mission. Rails, lines, lips, tricks, and straight out flow earned him a second place. Barry Mansfield had the board under his feet with what seemed like elastic glue. So consistent, good use of park, good lines and tricks and the flow, yes the flow was so good. A well earned 1st place and $1500.
A big thanks to Eventscorps, City of Mandurah, Mambo and Murdoch University for sponsoring the event and giving the competitors an opportunity to have such a rad competition to roll in.

The 13 competitors were all chasing the $4250 prize money. The battle jam format was simple, roll on the halfpipe, keep up the radness level and stay in the competition. Over the course of the 4 rounds the list went from 13 to 3. The top 3 competitors knew what it took to stay on the top. 1st place and $1500 went to Dylan Tomlinson who hit some nice high airs and stayed on his board the longest, consistency with radness allowed the judges to give him the top spot. Connor Harrington took out 2nd place and a nice $1000, some flowing lines helped with this for sure. Paul Bruno had some nice airs, hand plants and good flow and went home with an extra $700 for his 3rd place.

Dunsborough skatepark competition – Round 5 Freestyle Now Western Australian Skatepark Series

twitterlinkedinmail

Round 5 of the Freestyle Now Western Australian Skatepark Series took place on Sunday 16th February. The sun was out, it was hot, the skatepark was full, there was radness flowing and the spectators were enjoying the action. The day was split into two with the skatepark competition taking place first followed by a bowl jam. The skatepark competition saw all of the usual action, big tricks, some stacks and a large amount of smiles. It was great to see some girls entering into the girls only class at Dunsborough and young 6 year old Isi Campbell took out the win, big future in skating we hope. Local skate shop Soggy Bones gave away a deck just before the Bowl jam. It’s always great to see a heap of people in a bowl fighting for a prize. The bowl jam was rad. Some great moves from the bmx riders, but the skate was epic. Dunsborough has a large surfing community and it seems to have flow on affect with skateboarding as the town has some epic locals. There were good number of young rippers in the skate bowl jam all willing to take on the big guns but it was Ben Dittmer who was without a doubt the winner, with nonstop flow and radness, at one point he did a good 5 minute run in the bowl. The day would not happen if it was not for the City of Busselton and the Busselton youth council and out supporters, Stowaway distribution, Sacrifice scooters and 4 skateboard Co.

Dunsborough skatepark competition 2014

Clockwise from top left – Young Tommy Tunncliffe is rad – Matt Adkins is moving well through the competition scene and only still 14 years old – Laclan Micale has so much power in his skating, everyone loves a good boneless – Safyr Iriks took the 2nd in the girls class and it was great to see her skill.

Dunsborough skatepark competition - Dylan Schmidt 2014

Dylan Schmidt, tailwhip at height 1st place in bmx advanced.

Dunsborough skatepark competition bmx bowl 2014

Clockwise from top left – Dylan Schmidt killed it in the bowl, this flair is just some of the radness he went with for first place and $50 – Shane Ellis took 2nd, he has been riding for a long time and it shows, a mad 450 over the hip to a large case blew out his tyre and stopped him from going onto challenge Dylan for the 1st place – Matt Adkins is only 14 and is already got some mad skills, fakie bars – Riley Cummings was flowing the bowl well and it shows he has been doing so since it opened a year ago.

Dunsborough skatepark competition skateboard bowl 2014

Clockwise from top left – Isi Campbell, yes the ramp look really big but that is because Isi is only 6 years old – Luke Parish had some good lines around the bowl to get the flow for these 5.0’s – Ben Dittmer was the winner of the bowl jam, his runs were epic and so to his smiths – Nic Scheltema like the pocket a lot and was going some great grinds on the coping, this well dipped smith is just some of his ability.

Dunsborough skatepark competition skateboard bowl - Lachlan Micale 2014

Laclan Micale pumped around the bowl a fair bit to get the line to this rad high air.

Australind skatepark fundraiser

twitterlinkedinmail

At the beginning of February Freestyle Now was stoked to be involved with the Australind skatepark fundraiser. Australind is a growing community about 150kms south of Perth. They have an old ramp set up skatepark. Its small and not all that great, but any ramps are better than no ramps. A group of local skatepark users led by scooter rider Nigel Heidt and mum Sabine Heidt got a group together and took on the council to ask for an upgrade. With a council meeting and forever growing support the council approved for a new 1.35 million dollar skatepark to be built. The only catch is the community needs to raise $50000 to help. Skateparks are not cheap. So the Australind skatepark fundraiser day was set up to start with this.

Australind skatepark fundraiser febuary 2014

It was a great day with the community coming out with full support. With massages, food stalls, auctions, donation and an assortment of other means a total of $1750 was raised. This may not seem much but this event is the start and with this will come more community support and donations from business. Go visit the bigger and better Australind skatepark facebook page for all the newest info or to show your support. Once the new park is constructed it will be amazing, with it being a great stop over on the way down south to the plethora of other skateparks in the region. Thank you to all of the people who showed up rode, blasted and supported.
