Freestyle Now

BMX freestyle is now an official Olympic sport. There are many different types of bmx freestyle riding from street, skatepark, flatland, vert and dirt but it is the skatepark style is the one that is now in the Olympics. Freestyle Now decided it was time to run an official Western Australian BMX freestyle state championships for skatepark riders. The location was the Belmont skatepark due to its openness and functionality along with having a good jump box. There were a great number of riders who entered the competition which catered for many ages and skill levels. Under 10’s, beginners, intermediates, over 35’s and the open class.

Freestyle Now squad members placed we in the competition with Josh Garwood taking 2nd in open even though he went to hospital with a concussion and new squad member Luke Tooze taking 3rd in the open class along with Jack Carwardine placing 11th. Co founder of Freestyle Now Shaun Jarvis was leading the over 35’s class but took the 2nd place in the finals and recruits squad member Taj Hamilton took the 6th place in the intermediate class

The week leading up to the competition day was rain all week. But come competition day the sun was out although it was windy, but this did die down toward the end of the day. Many bmx riders turned up to roll out the rad and to try to take the prestigious number 1 in Western Australia title. There were lots of different styles of riding going down over the different classes, some riders going wide open and some riders being super technical along with a mix between them all. All up it was a great representation of the riding that is currently taking place in Western Australia. The riding in the groups was all really close as you can tell by the points awarded to each rider, each competitor had two runs with only their best run being taken into account for their points. Riders were judged on difficulty, diversity and consistency with a maximum score from one judge of 60 points, and when you add up all the numbers for rider to be only one or two points the difference you know it’s a close competition. A big congratulation to all the riders who entered and especially to the riders who took out the number 1 positions. Freestyle Now hopes to roll out the state championships into other states around Australia over the next year.
