Mandurah Action Sports Games

twitterlinkedinmail

The 2015 Mandurah Action Sports Games was one of Australia’s largest Action sports events. The event host a round of the International Waterski & Wakeboard Federation world cup along with skateboard, scooter and bmx competitions and so much more over the two days. This is Australia’s richest skatepark competition with $20000 to share amongst the skateboard, scooter and bmx competitors. The competition was so tight in all the disciplines with crazy action taking place everywhere you looked. But the craziest action was the weather. Cyclone Olwyn was a severe category three cyclone at its peak when it hit Exmouth and Carnarvon on Friday. Olwyn moved on down the coast toward Perth throughout Friday creating havoc in its path. Come Friday night for scooter qualifying the conditions were looking good until everything was set to go and it just started to send some water to the ground. It stopped and the park was almost dry but it was false hope, it started to rain again. Qualifying was postponed.

Action Sports Games 2015 - Brock Horneman 1st place BMX park

Brock Horneman was doing the biggest back flips of the weekend, this no hander to barspin flip was just some of the insane tricks that he threw down. 1st place in bmx park.

Action Sports Games 2015 - BMX Park competition

Clockwise from top left – Dylan Schmidt was going large like this double whip over the hip – Queenslander 3rd Nathan Philps was so stoked to throw this flip over the hip from the little kicker, last run of the finals he front flipped the same – Jack Fahey was on fire over the weekend but just not enough to place higher than 4th, this superman back flip is so rad – Laurence Bakewell could not repeat his 2nd place from last year and took home the 5th place with tricks like this double tailwhip 360.

Saturday morning arrived to constant rain and grey dark skies. With bmx and skate qualifiers to get through as well as the halfpipe battle jam Saturday was going to be a hard day. By 11am things started to get much better, the sky was patchy with blue the park had dried up and it was on. First up was bmx qualifying and it was on. Heavy hitters all over the place, flips, flairs, whips, spins and large airs. Dylan Schmidt and David Pinelli were looking good, third time attendee Nathan Philps was rolling it and new comers Daniel Chiarelli and Lee Kirkman were riding well. Brock Horneman wanted the win and you could see it with his dialed riding, though Laurence Bakewell and Jack Fahey were both looking at top placing as well. Large tricks got thrown over the Freestyle Now box jump by all competitors. The top 10 were sorted ready for the finals on Sunday.
Skateboard qualifying was up next. The competitors were sorted into groups of 3 and set off to attack the park. After the scores were in Barry Mansfield and Cory Tyres were both in top position with 107 points followed by Connor Harrington on 106 points. Harry Clark was rolling well but a little in consistence but that might have had to with his damaged wrists, Zac Clinkers was on fire and made it to the finals, he was stoked.
With the qualifying done it was time to move onto the halfpipe battle jam. The concept of the battle jam is simple, ride the ramp, get rad, stay rad, stay in the jam. With 4 rounds to get through and already running behind schedule and dark clouds above it was touch and go with the halfpipe jam. It rained and the halfpipe got drenched, the sun came out and with the help of others it got dried out and the jam was back on. Stand outs in bmx were Daniel Chiarelli who was going so dam high it was scary, Dylan Schmidt hitting large superwhips and Nathan Philps with opposite airs and variations. In Skateboard the coping got a good work out with the skaters grinding that steel in many ways. Brendan Cross was sending it and pushing the air tricks so was Connor Harrington, Cory Tyers was flowing the ramp and using all of his facial expressions to assist with that.
Heading into round 3 the weather was looking slim. But the jam went on with the ever looming chance of precipitation. At the end of round 2 in bmx it was unfortunate to have the first serious injury at Action Sports Games in the 5 years, Jacob DeAbreu came in wrong on a flair whip and ended up with a broken tibular. It’s a reminder to all that these kind of sports do pose a risk of injury. We wish Jacob a speedy recovery. Bmx top 6 was so hard to call, any one of them could make it to the final round. After the third round it was Laurence Bakewell in 6th, Jack Fahey in 5th and Nathan Philps in 4th. In skateboard with six skaters the judges could see who would make top 3 and at the end of round 3 it was Josh Birtwistle with 6th, Harry Clark in 5th and Cory Tyers for 4th
Unfortunately the weather decided that there had been enough radness thrown down and that it was going to win, some rain took place but it was too late in the day and there was no sun to help dry out the ramp, a decision had to be made, top 3 would be based on their round 3 runs, not the best but the competitors were happy with that and the judges saw that not much would change in the order if another round was run so the final placing were bmx 1st Brock Horneman, 2nd Daniel Chiarelli and 3rd Dylan Schmidt and in skate 1st Connor Harrington, 2nd Brendon Cross $1000, 3rd Paul Bruno. The competitors were so stoked that the day was done, it was rest time and ready for finals on Sunday.

Action Sports Games 2015 - Brock Horneman 1st place BMX halfpipe

Brock Horneman took out the 1st place in the bmx halfpipe battle jam. He took home $3000 with his double wins, here he is mid flair in the halfpipe battle jam.

Action Sports Games 2015 - BMX halfpipe battle jam

Clockwise from top left – Daniel Chiarelli came over from the east coast and went higher than anyone on the halfpipe and took out 2nd place, big onefooter invert – Dylan Schmidt super whipped his way into 3rd place in the halfpipe battle jam – Nathan Philps took out the 4th place with tricks like this flair. The only way to split Nathan and Dylan was that Dylan was landing a little higher on the ramp with each air than Nathan, the competition was that tight – Jack Fahey enjoys bmx and is always having fun, this rad Cherokee air is evidence of that fun.

Action Sports Games 2015 - skateboard halfpipe battle jam

Clockwise from top left – Connor Harrington took out the first place in the skateboard halfpipe battle jam and took home $1500 for doing so – Brendon Cross front grabbin on his way to 2nd and $1000 – Paul Bruno did some crazy handplants on his way to 3rd place – Cory Tyers loved the halfpipe and took out the 4th place

Sunday morning rolled around at first up was scooter qualifying, the semi finals were being skipped so it was top 6 straight to finals. It was going to be a tight for top 3 in scooter with either Jared Colwell, Jiordan Giacoppo or Ben Thomas able to take out the 1st place. In the finals it was Jae Yates for 6th, Luke Sheehan who sent some big tricks took 5th, 4th went to Brandon Black, with some bigger trick could have taken 3rd as there was a 37 point gap to Jiordan Giacoppo who took out the 3rd place with a total of 213 points. Second was Jarod Colwell with 217 points who was only 4 points behind 1st place Ben Thomas with 221 points.

Action Sports Games 2015 - Ben Thomas 1st place Scooter

Ben Thomas whips his way to 1st place in scooter.

Action Sports Games 2015 - Scooter

Clockwise from top left – Jared Colwell smashed out a double inward over the box and took home 2nd place – Jiordan Giacoppo got the 3rd place, large flair – Brandon Black with a stretched super grab – Luke Sheehan no hander and a 5th place.

Skateboard had quarter semis, then semis and then the finals. The quarter semis had the top 9 place getters. The 3 groups of 3 skaters were mixed up and sent off to roll out the rad. It was good to see young Josh Birtwistle in there taking out 9th place not far behind 8th place of Joe Bothams. Local Mandurah skater Jesse Nelson scored the 7th place. Into the semi finals any of the top 6 could win. Consistency was going to be the prime in a field like this. Cory Tyers took out the 6th place with some good lines but just not landing everything. Harry Clark who was skating with two injured wrists took some good lines around the park but just could not keep his feet on the deck enough, 5th place. Connor Harrington rounded up the semi finalists with the 4th place, one of the only skaters to jump the box but again just a little to in consistent, it was close but. Moving into the finals Zac Clinkers was surprised to be in top 3. The finalist had 3 minutes to throw it down. It was easy to see that Zac was skating well but just a little under Aaron Winter and Barry Mansfield, Aaron was hitting some good lines and did the transfer into the portable quarter from the flatbank, the crowd erupted in large noise. Aaron took out the 2nd place with the man himself Barry Mansfield taking out the win once again. Barry was so consistent with his skating, throwing in hard trick, hard lines and flowing smoothly around the park.

Action Sports Games 2015 - Barry Mansfield 1st place Skateboard park

Barry Mansfield front grabbin over the hip on his way to 1st place once again in the park competition.

Action Sports Games 2015 - skateboard park competition

Clockwise from top left – Aaron Winter was on a mission, this transfer from the bank into the quarter was one of the raddest things that went down at the action sports games, 2nd place – Zac Clinckers was stoked to get the 3rd place, feeble grind down the rail – Connor Harrington boostin the hip and taking 4th place – Harry Clark board sliding the rail on his way to getting 5th place

Bmx semi finals was on, it was hit the tricks to get to the finals, first place was $1500 and the glory of the win. With Sam Thomas not showing up, he must have had a hard night of party, and Jacob DeAbreu out from injury from the halfpipe battle jam there was only 8 in the final. Daniel Chiarelli took out the 8th place, just was not hitting on point like he was in qualifying. Lee Kirkman who has been competing as a professional for the past 20 years took out the 7th place, some nice original moves in there defiantly helped. 6th place went to David Pinelli who was riding so rad, 360 variations galore, but just did not use enough of the park to place higher. The top five were now ready for the finals. Laurence Bakewell although placing 3rd in qualifying just seemed to be lacking the power in the finals and took home the 5th place with 199 points. 4th place went to Jack Fahey, last year’s winner, who was riding with a broken toe, his front flip in on the landing ramp of the box was insane and he was stretching his superman seat grabs so far, it was crazy. 225 points. The competition was so tight anyone could have won. 3rd place and stoked to get that was Nathan Philps. Nathan used some of the smaller ramps to his advantage and moved them around the park to open up different lines, flair into the hip from the small kicker as well as front flip as well as a super clean 720 over the box were defiantly his raddest moments, 236 points. Freestyle Now rider Dylan Schmidt took home $1000 and the second place with 241 points. Qualifying in 6th place on Saturday Dylan stayed focused on the task and hit the radness in the finals. So much power. It was easy to see who would take out 1st place, many tried to stop him but it was obvious Brock Horneman was unstoppable. Back flip barspins to tuck no handers, flair whips at height, speed and flow, he had it all going on, extremely consistent and so much rad. 1st place with 271 points. Brock ended up taking home $3000 from his two wins, bmx park and halfpipe
The Mandurah Action Sports Games had it all, Cyclone, rain, wind, sun, radness, fun and tight competition. A big thanks to all of the event supporters City of Mandurah, Department of Regional Development, Royalties for Regions and Tourism Western Australia. The 2015 Action Sports Games will be the last one held in Mandurah, for 2016 it is intended to host the Action Sports Games in Bunbury but this still has to be confirmed.

Round 3 of the Freestyle Now Western Australian Skatepark Series took place at the Bayswater skatepark as part of the Baysie Youth Fest. It was a big day to be had as there were a large number of competitors and a battle of the bands competition happening throughout the day, along with all the other great youth based activities that happen at youth festivals. The City of Bayswater really turned it up for the competition with having a $1500 prize purse for the Advanced classes to share in, $500 each discipline as well as there being over $1400 worth of prizes to be given away. From all reports the competition was nothing sort of rad with lots of people attending to watch, compete or just to enjoy the battle of the bands. Kwinana skatepark competition – Round 2 Freestyle Now Western Australian Skatepark Series

twitterlinkedinmail

Round 2 of the Freestyle Now Western Australian Skatepark Series took place at a packed out Kwinana skatepark. It was a large night. With a record number of competitors in all disciplines, scooter, skate and bmx its rad to see so many people enjoying some good skatepark activity. The Kwinana skatepark has been there for a few years now with the old metal halfpipes being at least 17 years old, it is a highly underrated skatepark. The layout is good with many different lines and obstacles to be used. The skatepark was put to good use on the Friday night competition.
Jiordan Giacoppo was on fire in the scooter advanced class with speed and large tricks, his inward up the stair gap to bars out was one of the high lights, Brandon Black tried hard but a 2nd was all he could take but not from the lack of trying, good halfpipe runs for sure. Wade France took out the 3rd place with some good lines through the park. Skate advance was awesome, Brendon Cross took out the first place and took home a new skate deck as well as nailing an ally-oop 270 grab over the transition hips, was crazy. Young Zac Clinkers showed up, skated well, kept his board under his feet well over his 2 minutes of skatepark run and took home the 2nd place for doing so. Mason Brown  took home the 3rd place and was stoked to skate the Kwinana skatepark for his first time. BMX advanced was all about madkins. Matt Adkins hit the big tricks and took the win, back flip fakies, cannonballs and flairs were just some of his radness. Mitchell Pianto took out the 2nd place with a solid run of park lines and radness all mixed together. Young Regan Lothian took out the 3rd place, stoked to see him do the stair gap into the bank.
All up the Kwinana competition was nothing short of rad. Good vibe all round with some great competition going on. Lots of competitors went home with a prize product thanks to our supporters Local BMX, Sacrifice scooters and 4 skateboard Co . A big thank you to Arbie and Russell from the Kwinana youth zone for all the good work and to the City of Kwinana.

Rockingham skatepark competition – Round 1 Freestyle Now Western Australian Skatepark Series

twitterlinkedinmail

With the start of the new year so to brings the start of the new Freestyle Now Western Australian Skatepark Series Round 1 kicked off at the Rockingham skatepark to a great number of competitors and spectators, it was a awesome turnout. What is really good is seeing so many people and parents at the competition and supporting.
At all Freestyle Now competitions where possible we run a girls only class this is to help get more girls involved into the sports and the scene and at Rockingham it was good to see Ebony Rodriguez skating again as well as young Bethany Baohm out there on the bmx. A 1st and 2nd respectively for the two girls
The scooter beginners had an good number and with so much talent it won’t be long until we see some of them moving up to the advanced class. Good work to Conner Atkinson for taking the first place, a young guy but with a lot of power in his riding. Young Talyn Galic has been progressing well in the beginners class and his second place was well deserving. His cannonball over the spine got may fist bumps and hi fives from his peers. Kadin Clarke rode well and hit up some good tricks to take the 3rd place. The scooter advanced had young ripper Levi Mills take the top place but it was a close competition with only 4 points between 1st and 2nd place by Ethan Mackenzie. Both of these young riders and gaining more and more skills at every competition. Caleb Pratt rode well but was a little inconsistent and took the 3rd place.
Skateboard was represented well at round 1 with Ton DeSancha taking out the win in the beginners with is being his first ever competition, he was pumped but it was a tight top two with Tody Dodds only 2 points behind in the second place. It was good to see Taj Gosling getting in there and taking the 3rd place. Skateboard advanced was all about Alex Yates. He was on fire and threw down the radness. 2nd place went to Mason Brown who ended up taking out the 2nd place in the 2014 series. Mason was rolling through the runs well, it was good to see him skate. 3rd place went to Chonchoe Lasvendous. He was a little less consistent in his runs at Rockingham which kept his scores down some. Chonchoe did how ever take out the number 1 spot in the 2014 F.N.W.A.S.S.
The bmx class had some rippers rolling about throwing down. These guys were pumped. Jarred Schilling took out the win in the beginners and proceeded to get stoked. 2nd place was taken out by Adam Pearson and Reece Barwick was rad enough to get the 3rd place. Bmx Advanced it was all Dylan Schmidt. Large and big are two words to describe Dylan’s runs. Growing up riding the Rockingham park was defiantly an advantage. Dylan also took out the year end title in the F.N.W.A.S.S. Kyle Fielder entered the beginners class but as soon as he started his first run we knew he was in the wrong class, and was moved up to the advanced where his speed, flow and style earned him the second place. 3rd place went to Jesse Brown who seemed to be a little off on the consistency which did cost him some points but he still shredded as always.
A big thank you to the City of Rockingham for their continual support of skatepark competitions and skatepark coaching workshops sessions. It is defiantly helping to build a great scene and encourage riders to progress. Thank you to our supporters Local BMX, 4 skateboard co. and Sacrifice Scooters.
Round 2 of the Freestyle Now Western Australian Skatepark Series takes place at the Kwinana skatepark on Friday 13th February so make sure you get along and get involved.

A congratulations needs to go out to the competitors who competed and followed the series enough to keep their points up. Freestyle Now skatepark coaching workshop sessions in Karratha

twitterlinkedinmail

In early November Freestyle Now hosted a series of skatepark coaching workshops sessions and a skatepark competition in and around Karratha, in the northwest of Western Australia. Freestyle Now squad members Kim Bloodson, Mitch Harris and John Manning we in charge of bringing the radness to the locals of Roebourne, Wickham, Dampier, Nickol West and Karratha. It was an awesome trip from all accounts with the 3 squad members really getting in with the locals, interacting with them and assisting them with some great skill sets. We got Kim, Mitch and John to sending a few words about their experience from Karratha.

Kim Bloodson
As I stepped off the plane in Karatha I instantly regretted only owning black clothes, you have to physically push through the wall off heat to get to the terminal, I’m sure we are all going to melt to death. Me Mitch and John are greeted by a lovely lady asking if we are the freestyle guys and we are all like “aaawww yyeeaaahhh” high fives n cool handshakes n stuff. We start doing backflips n flairs n junk in the terminal, you know just being rad guys. We are given a rental car and head into the inferno to find the hotel. I get a private room cause I’m the most freestyle while John n Mitch begin the fight for wifi in their shared room, suckers. First job on this trip is Roebourne. Its new park is the mostest epic goodness I’ve seen in a long time. The locals are super keen to ride our stuff as they have none of their own, so we have a lovely afternoon of hangs and laughs with some pretty wild kids, man it was the best. Driving the 30km back to Karatha we are greeted with a breath taking sunset, it’s so moving we put on a Celine Dion CD and cry like little woman at the majesty of the Pilbara. Dinner at the tavern, yes please, found fifty bucks, good night. Day 2 begins. It’s Wickham today and its only 1000000 degrees so it should be a casual one. Wickham only has a small park but it’s got huge attitude, or raditude. The kids there are amazing cool crew and many tricky tricks where learnt by the whipper snappers, cool tunes and a feast for the masses to boot. Lovely drive home past the prison and back to the air con hotel. Day 3 is at the new Karatha park in town. It’s a nibble fest of goodness and fun fun, the lovely youth workers cook more food for the humans and we just be like the coolest guys around ever, cool handshakes n stuff, so cool. I grew up {hahahaha} in this town so it’s amazing for me to be back here doing what I did here 20 years ago. I’m constantly asking locals about old spots and long lost ramps but they look at me like I’m speaking another language??Generation gap? Day 4 is Dampier. We head out early and scope out the town, it’s so beautiful. We play the Celine Dion CD again and just cry heaps. We then proceeded to do the most manly thing one can do in the Pilbara apart from kicking a football at a V8,,,,WE OPEN OUR FIRST COCNUT. High fives and backflips happen. Dampier park is my most fav, cass vibes on the cuteset little PA and met some awesome crew, best crew up there, so nice seeing these isolated guys skating so hard. Day 5 is comp day in Karatha Nickol West skatepark, huge turnout in the most hotness since hotness was a thing. We melt and yell and laugh and eat and hang and make new friends all day to a banging soundtrack supplied by a DJ. Really was an amazing comp. So with that our trip is at an end but not before we spend the night dancing at the local night club, ouch, good times. I hope I get the chance to do this again next year cause I felt like we really did a good thing up there. I would like to thank Sophie for looking after us so well and all the other old and new friends for being rad….
PS no Celine Dion was actually played on this trip but we did buy a Nelly CD….It’s getting hot in here so Freestyle Now…………. before it’s too late…..bbyyeee blood.xox

Freestyle Now Karratha skatapark coaching workshops 2014 - John Manning and Mitch Harris

John Manning
The recent Karatha trip was a really good time, despite the heat, checking out the five parks that we held coaching workshop sessions at during the week was my favourite part of the trip. Roebourne park in particular was a really fun park and had some really interesting features to it. I’d love to go back to that park one day to get a proper ride of it. The kids that participated in the coaching sessions and the comp were all nice kids and fairly well behaved. Overall it was a fun time and all the events we held went smoothly. Thanks to Freestyle Now for the trip!

The opportunity to travel to the Pilbara to run coaching workshop sessions and a competition was recently presented to Freestyle Now by the City of Karratha. Bloodson, John and I found ourselves lucky enough to be flying north to run these events. The blast of heat and humidity received while getting off the air-conditioned cabin of the plane was a unique welcome to apart of Australia I’d never had the chance to see before.
After checking in to our accommodation J-Love (John) and I were given a VIP tour of Karratha by Blood, who had grown up here and was interested to see how things had changed and capture some feelings of nostalgia. Highlights of the tour included guided views of roofing of some of Karratha’s commercial and residential properties accompanied by Blood’s catchphrase/future pick-up line: “I did the roof on that”. Blood also pointed out some spots that he used to ride and skate back in the day, “make do with what you have” perfectly labels the curbs, sets and sketchy drains that were around.
Coaching clinics started with Roebourne, definitely one of the most well-constructed and designed parks seen while up there. The heat didn’t seem to deter anyone from having a shot on John’s bike and scooter or my board. Wickham was next and with weather to match the day before it was again surprising to me how enthusiastic most kids were to be out in the unforgiving sun. Savior came in the form of a youth worker whose generous gift of icy-poles provided a cool respite.
Coaching at the Shed was a nice break-up of the week, with a later start time in the cooler part of the day and evening everybody was a lot more energetic and willing to commit. Free sausage sizzle was rad too (too bad for Bloodson who is a vegan). Coaching clinics finished in Dampier which was an excellent place to hang out beforehand. Coconuts, palms and beaches with a cool breeze made me question whether I was really working. With cheap frozen cokes, a decent skatepark, and scenic views this place seemed like paradise. There was a really good turn-out for skaters in Dampier with a good range of skill and age, excellent to see a decent scene in such a remote place.
The trip ended with the competition at Nickol West. In what seemed like weather conditions reserved for the ninth circle of Hell we helped set up and got under way. Free stuff will make a person do crazy things, evidenced by the amount of kids who showed up to ride and skate in the heat. The free water was essential as you seemed to sweat your body weight whether you were moving or not, regardless the day was successful with everybody receiving a prize for their efforts and minimal injuries (except for that guy who burnt himself on his friend’s home-made moped/death-trap, but that had nothing to do with the comp).
In summary, a fantastic trip that all three of us agreed we’d love to do again. Hopefully see you next year Karratha.
