Freestyle Now squad member David Pinelli update

twitterlinkedinmail

Freestyle Now squad member David Pinelli had been kicking it large over in Melbourne since making the move from Perth in mid June. With lots of indoor skateparks at his disposal he has been shredding it hard and recently placed well at the Rampfest open competition. David is hanging and riding with some heavy hitters in Melbourne and sent through some rad photos thanks to Andrew Ahumada.
“Yoo! Just thought I’d give you a bit of an update on what I have been up to in Melbourne. Well I’m still un-employed and riding heaps! Rode the Rampfest open contest in June and ended up making finals and placing 6th place, which I was pretty stoked on. I’ve been riding indoors mainly, but when weather allows me to ride outside I don’t say no. Definitely learning heaps too which I can’t wait to film and show everyone! I’ll be back in Perth in October to hit up some stunt shows with the Freestyle Now squad and a few coaching workshops. It will be rad to ride and hangout with everyone once again! Well that’s about it really. Stay rad”

John Manning update

twitterlinkedinmail

Freestyle Now reserves squad member John Manning has sent in an update on what he has been doing over the last few months

“Over the past couple months I have been riding and filming a hell of a lot, mainly for a new video that myself and three other mates are planning on bringing out in a couple months. At first we were planning on just filming throughout Armadale but recently we decided to expand the video and film all around Perth so it would be a better overall video. We are planning on filming for a couple more months yet so we can all try get some good clips in and avoid the rainy days. Apart from filming this video I have been doing a couple Freestyle Now gigs here and there which has been fun and just the usual arvo sessions at Armadale skate plaza with the locals. For a terribly designed plaza we all seem to enjoy riding it a lot haha. Also we have found a couple of fun undercover spots that we can ride when it rains now so we always have somewhere to ride when it’s wet. As for my bike it’s running super good. I put it together back in February and I haven’t had to replace anything on it besides some pedals and some new tyres (thanks to Freestyle Now for the tyres) and I’m super happy with the whole setup. The video in this web post are some clips filmed in Armadale that I have gotten while we have been filming for our main video, not a lot there but give it a watch, thanks.”

Rockys final fest competition – Round 11 Freestyle Now Western Australian Skatepark Series

twitterlinkedinmail

The Rockys final fest 2014 was rad. The City of Rockingham put up $3000 in prize money, $1000 per discipline for the competitors to chase. With about 300 spectators scattered around the one off ramp course all watching some of the best skatepark competitors Perth has to offer. The City of Rockingham has five skateparks within its boundaries, and over the past 12 months these five skateparks have all hosted competitions. The culmination of these past 5 competitions was the Rocky’s finals fest. This competition was also Round 11 Freestyle Now Western Australian Skatepark Series and a double pointer. To be able to qualify to enter the Rocky’s final fest competitors had to have placed in the top 3 of the advanced class at any of the five skatepark competitions or have been at last year’s Rocky’s final fest. There were a few wildcard entries as well for a lucky few who got an invite. The ramp course/skatepark was set up in the early hours of Sunday morning, no one knew what the set up was going to be until they arrived. There was a good turnout of competitors although in skate and scooter some invitees did not show which left them groups a little short in competitors. There was something there for every type of style of riding, ledges, rails, hips, spine and box jumps. The competitors all had two one minute runs each and when it was all said and done some were stoked with their placing and some were not, but that is how a competition goes.
The plans are already in place for the Rocky’s final fest to take place in 2015, but to get your invite make sure you get along to one of the City of Rockingham’s skatepark competitions to secure your place. Information on these competitions will be posted on our coming events so make sure you keep in check.

rockingham finals fest 2014 scooter Billy Watts 1st place

Billy Watts took out the first place in the advanced scooter class and won $500. One of the only riders to hit the jump box with power to throw down large tricks, like this 360 no hander.

rockingham finals fest 2014 scooter

Clockwise from top left – Ben Thomas tied with Matty Ceravolo for 2nd place. Ben had some original tricks like this saran wrap back flip – Matty Ceravolo is a powerful rider and rode the course well, this flair turndown was just some of the crazyness that Matty unleshed – Jiordan Giacoppo took out the 4th place. It was a tight competition between the top 4 place getters. Jiordan was on fire and hit up some good tricks like this kickless rewind over the spine – Aden Lillas is a regular at the City of Rockingham competitions. At most competitions he enters skate, bmx and scooter a true competitor. At the invite competition he took out 5th place and was $50 richer. This inward of the upledge help to kick up his points.

rockingham finals fest 2014 skateboard Chonchoe Lasvendous 1st place

Chonchoe Lasvendous took out the 1st place in skate. Original moves like the drop off ledge hippy jump helped him on the win, as well as good use of the park. $500 richer on the day.

rockingham finals fest 2014 skateboard

Clockwise from top left – Mason Brown was a wildcard entry and took out the 2nd place spot and $250, he sessioned this rail well and this K grind was just some of his radness – 3rd place and $125 went to Mandurah local Jamie Pratten, he had good flow around the course and used the spine well – 4th place went to 12 year old Josh Birtwistle. For a young skater he has got some great abilities and ended up locking in this smith grind across and down the rail to much noise from the crowd and his peers – Daine Brown took out the 5th placing, he was defiantly skating for the fun of it and it showed during his runs, he always looks like he is having when skating and so should you.

rockingham finals fest 2014 bmx Laurance Bakewell 1st place

1st Place in BMX went to Laurence Bakewell. He hit the ramps and hit them hard. His last run was crazy and full of whips and flips and spins, a triple whip over the box was defiantly a point scorer, but with 360 double whips and flair whips, it was no doubt that a win and $500 would be his, although it was only one point between 1st and second. This double whip air and dipped 360 over the spine were only some of the radness he possessed on the day.

rockingham finals fest 2014 bmx

Clockwise from top left – 2nd place and one point behind Laurence was Dylan Schmidt. In his second run he slowed down a bit and that could have been what kept him from the top spot. His superwhips are large and was defiantly one of the tricks that help him stay 40 points above 3rd – Jacob De Abreu has progressed well over the last few years, now riding brakeless and with pegs he is moving to an all over style of riding, taking in large air tricks and tech street moves as well, a third place and $125 was his results at this year’s Rocky’s final fest – Dempsey has been in the Perth bmx scene for many years, he has some mad skills on a bike and you never know what he will come out with when riding, this large 360 tabletop was the highlight of his runs. He had some great flow around the park and won $75 for his 4th place – Bradley South finally got his wish, after 6 years of riding he finally won some money, $50 for his 5th place. He was super happy, but to Brad bmx is all about the fun not the win. Tail whip over the spine.

More photos from the day can be found at our facebook page.

Paul Chamberlain update

twitterlinkedinmail

Freestyle Now squad member, Sydney resident, father of Beatrix and rad roller, Paul Chamberlain is constantly progressing his riding. Never to be content with just doing the same tricks he seems to change his bike parts to force himself to change his styles. From no brakes, two pegs, three pegs, high seat, low seat and back to four pegs, all of these modifications push him into different styles and tricks. He recently sent through an update on what’s he has been up to lately.

“I’ve gone back to a more flatland specific setup over the past six months. I’ve been riding quite a lot. Basically at least a couple of hours a day. I feel good. Working on a new style. No touching the seat (Haven’t put my hand on the seat since the 3rd of March), no pumping and more stepping up onto the tire. Mostly front wheel at the moment, but I’m always keeping the back wheel alive. Last week I hit a car at a roundabout because I went from a chrome rim to a black one and the brakes didn’t work as well. Lucky I was wearing a helmet and bag – That took most of it. Lucky escape. Get the right pads for your rim! I was out for a week, but I’m back riding again. I am heading to England in August with my wife and daughter to see my family, and planning to head to ja[an again in October. That’s about it really. Between working, riding and family I don’t have time for anything else. Thanks Stowaway distribution and S&M bikes – very stoked.

Freestyle Now work experience guy

twitterlinkedinmail

This week at Freestyle Now we have had the pleasure of having Oli Lane from Ellenbrook Christian collage attend our offices for his year 10 work experience.  He has been helping around the office with many tasks and working on getting the ramps for the Rockingham Invite Competition ready to shred on the day. Freestyle Now are happy to have school students in for work experience and teach the younger generation how to run a business and roll out the radness. Oli had this to say about his week with Freestyle Now

“I came from Bindoon just to do my work experience with Freestyle Now, I love what they do with the comps and demos and it’s awesome. It’s interesting to learn that things don’t just happen they take lots of planning!!! On Monday we went for a quick ride at Carine skatepark and I got a few little clips there with my gopro. I’ve spent my mornings in the office sorting out the invites for the Rockingham Invite Competition and trying to ride when I can. In the arvos I’ve been helping build ramps and painting them up, they’re a really nice size and look fun to ride can’t wait to try them.  This has been a hell of a good week filled with, jokes, coffee, work and… coffee all mixed into one, it has been a rad week at the Freestyle Now office but as they say all good things come to an end. Thanks for a good time.”

twitterlinkedinmail

The City of Rockingham is very proactive in skatepark activity. With each of their 5 skateparks all hosting a competition and multiple workshop sessions there is plenty of action happening within the city’s boundaries. With each of the competitions that take place over the past 12 months the top place getters in the advanced classes all receive an invite to a special invite only competition. There will only be a maximum of 15 competitors in each of the disciplines and with $3000 up for grabs between, skateboard, scooter and bmx there will no doubt be some radness flowing on the day. The competition takes place at the Rockingham Netball Courts on Dixon Road in Rockingham on Sunday 13th July from 11am to 5pm. Freestyle Now will be bringing all of its ramps to the location and setting up a one off ramp course that will be challenging with lines and transfers for all to flow on. There will also be a free ride time for other non competitors who would like to come down to the competition location, watch the competition and then get to roll on the one off set up. This competition will be Round 11 Freestyle Now Western Australian Skatepark Series and will be a double pointer for the series. Check out the 2013 Rockingham skate scoot and bmx finals fest here. Shaun Jarvis update

twitterlinkedinmail

Freestyle Now founding member Shaun Jarvis send in a update on what he has been up to over the last few weeks, looks like he is one busy dude.

“Hey all, hope everyone is getting rad. It’s good to be back home in Perth. May was a hectic month of travelling with Canberra, Melbourne, Cunnamulla and Exmouth it is good to be back and riding more regularly. Travelling is super fun but it can be hard to get some riding sessions in at my favourite spot the Perth Concert Hall, headphones on and just letting it roll for a good few hours. I’m super stoked to be progressing on some new links and tricks and will most defiantly be stoked to roll them out for DownUnderGround coming up soon. I’ve been getting some of these sessions on video and making some short edits, it would have been rad to have so easy access to video 20 years ago.
I’ve been working a fair bit on getting some new ramps made and best of all finalizing the work on our trailer with a roll in for our stunt shows. Still a bit more work on the trailer to do but hope to have the roll in finished in a few more weeks ready for the invite competition in Rockingham. I got to say I’m super stoked on things at the moment with a stack of new events planned and coming up.
I am just loving riding so much being on my bike is so dam good. This year will mark my 33rd year into BMX, and I’m just as stoked now as I was then. Stay rad.”

Below are some of Shaun’s videos from his latest flatland sessions at the Perth concert hall
