Freestyle Now bmx stunt show – Northam Agricultural show

twitterlinkedinmail

The Northam agricultural show recently took place and the Freestyle Now bmx stunt squad was invited back again to entertain the masses and perform some radical bmx stunt shows. Freestyle Now squad members Shaun Jarvis, Dylan Schmidt and Laurence Bakewell we also joined with reserves squad member Brady Thomas to throw down the radness. The weather was looking like rain but the sun prevailed and won the battle with the clouds. The Northam show was a great show like all country shows and we are stoked that we were able to entertain the patrons of the show once again.

DownUnderGround round two – the video round

twitterlinkedinmail

DownUnderGround the video contest for 2014 so get your cameras ready and start your flatland game on. DownUnderGround, the Australian national bmx flatland contest series started in 2008. It has gone through a few changes since then with it being 4 physical contests, but with Australia being such a big country travel to that many contests becomes expensive. DownUnderGround now has two physical contests, round 1 in Sydney and round 3, the finals in Melbourne and round two is a video contest.

Downunderground round 2 - the video round 2014The video contest concept is simple, each rider in pro or advanced classes gets to submit one contest video run, between one and two minutes long, as if they were riding at a flatland contest. (It must be unedited and continuous, no video cuts) It can be filmed on any device, quality of video is not important. You don’t need to make the video fancy or have music backing or spend stacks of time editing it. You are judged on the quality of your riding not the quality of the video. The video run gets judged using the same criteria as a normal contest, difficulty, consistency and variety. Points are awarded and these points go towards the year end title.
DownUnderGround round 2 – the video round is open to all riders within Australia keen to throw down. (Even international riders staying in Australia at the time of the contest)
1st place – Share in $400 worth of travel to get to either round 3 – the finals in Melbourne 29th November or for round 1 series 7 in Sydney January 2015) – thanks to Freestyle Now
2nd place – pedals, grips and t shirt – thanks to Colony
3rd place – grips and t shirt – thanks to Colony
Once you have your video completed and you are happy with your run you will need to submit your video to BMXflatlandAustralia.
It’s simple to do, head over to www.wetransfer.com
Once all that is done, click on “submit” and it’s all done – simple as that! Your video will be uploaded to wetransfur. BmxFlatnadAustralia we receive an email notification that your video is uploaded. From there they upload all the contest videos to their YouTube channel.
Make sure that the file size is not to large or it will be difficult to submit.
Entry’s close 3rd November so all videos will need to be submitted by then to be eligible. On November 4th the videos will all go live on the net through the BMXFlatlandAustralia YouTube channel. The videos will be judged by the judging panel (announced soon) with results posted shortly after that.
Get out there and film, nothing is stopping you. Full details on the on the entry information can be found on the format and judges page.
Last year squad member Shaun Jarvis took out the first place in the advanced class with this below video entry submission, you can look at the 2013 video contest results here.

Waroona High school assembly

twitterlinkedinmail

Recently Freestyle Now was invited to the Waroona High School for a school presentation. The focus behind the school presentations is to demonstrate and to educate what radness is all about but to also provide a motivational presentation to inspire others. The week that Freestyle Now visited Waroona High School it was in the middle of mental health week and the “R U OK” program was in full swing. Freestyle Now brought in a few of our ramps to the Waroona school and set about to put on a rad show. For the assembly presentation the younger students from the Waroona Primacy school also attended so it was super loud with lots of people screaming.  After the performance the primary students went back to class and our founder of Freestyle Now Shaun Jarvis gave a motivational presentation to the high school students on his past experience about “R U OK” and how it is important to have something in your life that you can turn to that is creative and constructive. For Shaun it has been BMX. At the end of the presentation the students got to hang out with the Freestyle Now squad and ask questions.
We got a few photos from the day and one of the teachers Jo Evans was rad to offer her video footage to us to post up.
R U OK is an important question to ask your friends, as sometime they are feeling the weight of problems and issues and a simple gesture of asking “R U OK” can be all they need to know you care and are willing to listen. If you feel you need assistance with any mental health issues get in touch with lifeline.

Collie skatepark competition – Round 14 Freestyle Now Western Australian Skatepark Series

twitterlinkedinmail

Round 14 of the Freestyle Now Western Australian Skatepark Series went down at the new Collie skatepark, about 200kms south of Perth. The weather did not look promising the day before and even the morning on the drive down it was not looking good. But the sun came out, just for a little while before it decided to rain. Not much rain but enough to stop the competition for a while so the park could dry up. With the help from brooms and towels the park got dry and the competition went on. This was the first competition to be held at the new Collie skatepark and some of the locals were not sure to enter or not as they did not know what to expect. This all changed once the competition started and at the prize give out most were bummed that they did not enter. There are plans for another competition scheduled for January 2015 so keep checking our coming events page for that information one we have it finalized. The day finished up well with some fairly stoked locals and a few out of towners who made the trek. Big thanks to the Shire of Collie for their support and to our supporters Stowaway distribution, Sacrifice scooters and 4 skateboard Co.

Traveling around Australia with Freestyle Now was the start of his bmx travel lifestyle. Since then he has moved on to larger travel plans including China and multiple trips to America. Last year Kie went to America with some good friends and rode some great spots and had some good times. Kie Ashworth update

twitterlinkedinmail

Freestyle Now squad member Kie Ashworth is truly an Australian legend. His ability on a bike is amazing, it’s like watching water flowing down a stream, so smooth and fluid. Kie has been on the Freestyle Now squad roster for 9 years now, we are proud to have him repping. Kie spends his time now working to earn enough money to go traveling. This is his passion to travel with his bike and ride. Kie is living the bmx lifestyle. Recently Kie took a rather large fall from a rail and ended up with a bad shoulder injury and a few months off his bike. As soon as he was given the all clear from the doctors he was back at it and riding hard. His first call out, straight back from injury was to icepick chink the top of the buoy at the Fremantle skatepark. We caught up with Kie earlier this week to capture his radness. Kie also send in a few words so read on and then proceed to be inspired. Go check out Kie profile page and scope out his bike set up and some of his videos.

Kie Ashworth Icepick chink the bouy at Fremantle Skatepark August 2014

“I want to icepick chink the top of the buoy” – Kie Ashworth. After a few goes the buoy rings with the help of Kie’s peg.

“So after doing my AC joint in my left shoulder it has been like 3 months in a sling. Was a long recovery for me but finally have had the all clear to return to normal again just taking it easy on the shoulder, have been back at the gym doing light weights and trying to get full range of movement back.. Since that it feels that recovery has become faster which is good.. So I have been riding again for a couple weeks now, can still count how many rides I’ve had on one hand but none the less it’s been amazing to be back on the bike and I couldn’t be happier. So far some sessions are cut short as the left arm starts to give way but it won’t be long until that’s back to par.. Pretty excited to get back to some work and start doing some trips again. The time off has definitely sparked some motivation for me and I’m just all round happy to be back on a bike.”

Laurence Bakewell moves to full squad status

twitterlinkedinmail

Laurence Bakewell was added to the reserves squad back in June 2012. Laurence has been rolling out so much radness over the past few months that we are pleased to announce his move up to full squad member status. Laurence has the ability to flair anything, even a kerb and can throw the casual triple whip. With his movement up to full squad status he got together with his good friend Bradley South to film an afternoon at Bayswater skatepark and smashed out banger after banger. There was no holding back with the radness. Time to let the radness roll. Check out Laurence’s new squad profile page to get a bit more information on what make this radster roll. Laurence sent in a few words on what he has been doing lately, enjoy.

Australia day 2014 - bmx stunt shows - Laurenve Bakewell double whip Laurence Bakewell throwing down a double whip at the 2014 Australia day shows.

“Hey guys Laurence here just checking in keeping you up to date with my shenanigans. The past couple of months have been rad. In March Mandurah hosted the third annual action sports games which were insane, and each year it just gets better and better, I managed to take out 2nd in park which was crazy because the competition was insane!!! In July I took out the first place at the Rocky’s final fest. That was another insane day with a unique set up. The spine was dope and 360 variations were done. I am super pumped to be getting moved up from the reserves squad to full squad status as well as getting a brand new full set thanks to Freestyle Now. The new bike is rad. I ended up destroying the back wheel on a flair whip on my first ride but with a new more stronger rear wheel replacement I’m again throwing the bangers. My good friend Bradley South came to Bayswater skatepark with me the other day and we got to film this short banger edit. Hope you guys enjoy. These past few months have just been insane. Looking forward to hitting up the Perth Royal Show for the 8 days of stunt shows along with a heap of other shows Freestyle Now has got going on over the next few months, it’s going to be crazy. I can’t wait to see what’s to come in the future.”
