Paul Chamberlain wins at DownUnderGround

twitterlinkedinmail

Last weekend in Sydney saw DownUnderGround the national bmx flatland contest series kicked off with round 1 taking place in Bondi. Freestyle Now squad members Paul Chamberlain, Shaun Jarvis and Jason Parker attended the contest along with a good number of other flatland riders from around Australia. The contest was one of the best that Australian flatland has seen in a good number of years with good rider turn out and the level of riding being pushed. The weekend saw a lot of riding being done and fun and goodtimes were one of the main objectives. Jason Parker and Shaun Jarvis competed in the advanced class with Shaun taking out 3rd place with a good solid 1st run apart from just two touches. Jason took out the 5th placing on the day with the usual Jason style. The day belonged to Paul Chamberlain who took out the 1st place in the pro class, with some dialed riding. His second run was the one that sealed his win. Super consistent with an amazing long link that he has only ever pulled 3 times, two times only days before the contest and in his contest run. The day was perfect, sunny and hot and being in Bondi it was off to swim after the contest. If you want to see more info check the page here DownUnderGround top 3 pro downunderground January 2014

Paul Chamberlain update

twitterlinkedinmail

Freestyle Now squad member and all proud dad Paul Chamberlain has been on a bit of a vacation this past week, he sent in this quick update.
“Took a week off to go up the coast with my family in camper. Have been driving around inland for a few days. Stayed up by Mount Warning the past two nights. Down in Brunswick Heads at the moment. Chilling. I’m cooking two large mullet that I got from a fisherman tonight despite the fact that I don’t eat fish anymore. They’ll all enjoy it though. I’m pretty good at cooking the old seafood. It’s in my salty blood. I met Jaspa Palffy, a scooter rider at Bellingen skatepark and he asked if he could film me. Less than 24 hours later I had an edit online!”

Morawa skatepark opening celebrations

twitterlinkedinmail

Morawa is a very small town about 400kms north of Perth, Western Australia. When some of the town children asked for a skatepark the town had a meeting with some keen parents and councilors. Karen Chappel was at the meeting as she had a 13 year old son who wanted to have a skatepark. Karen is now the shire president and her son is now 31 years old. Yes it took 18 years for Morawa to get a skatepark. Finally the youth of the area have a place to shred. On the 10th of November, Freestyle Now headed up to Morawa to help celebrate the opening day with a coaching jam session. The opening ceremony took place and then it was down to business of letting the radness flow. A big thanks to the Shire of Morawa for the day as well as our supporters, Stowaway distribution, 4 skateboard Co and Sacrifice scooters.

Freestyle Now at DownUnderGround

twitterlinkedinmail

Freestyle Now squad members Paul Chamberlain and Shaun Jarvis attended the recent DownUnderGround flatland contest in Melbourne over the weekend. This contest was the finals of the 5th series. Heading into the contest Shaun was two points behind for the year end title in the advanced class while Paul was almost guaranteed the year end title in the pro class. The two riders rode well during the contest with both hitting up some of their harder combos and links. Shaun had a few bike problems during his runs which held him back from being a consistent as he wanted which resulted in a 3rd place in the advanced class behind Tasmanian Matt Wootton and 1st place getter André from Melbourne. As a result Shaun ended up with the 2nd place in the overall year end title. Paul rode well in the pro class and smashed out some great combos for the 2nd place, but a few inconstant links may have been his demise in taking the win from Australian flatland heavy hitter Shane Badman. Paul ended up taking the number one year end title in the Pro class. Congratulations to both riders and no doubt both riders will represent Freestyle Now well in Sydney for round 1 of series 6 of DownUnderGround which is set to take place on the 18th January 2014.

Shaun Jarvis Brisbane to Sydney road trip

twitterlinkedinmail

Freestyle Now head honcho Shaun Jarvis recently spent a week on the east coast of Australia. We get the heads up on what went down, read on.

“Hey all just got back the other day from a rad road trip/holiday over on the east coast. It was a rad time on the road with David Pinelli. I headed to Brisbane on the Friday as we had some halfpipe shows rolling on the Sunday. It was good catching up with friends on Friday night. On Saturday I picked up David from the airport as he was flying in from Melbourne where he had spent some time there riding and competing in the FOXBMXPRO competition, where he took 10th place. Saturday afternoon we went and rode a few Brisbane parks. Sunday was an early start for the halfpipe shows but the day was rad. On Monday we headed to Ride On indoor park for a good session.

Tuesday we started our trek to Mudgee to visit Billy Brooks. On the way we stopped at Warwick for a ride and Armidale before getting to Tamworth for sleep time. Leaving Armidale David was on the hotel scout via the net and we got side tracked and forgot to get petrol. With about 30kms on the petrol counter left we were hoping to make it to the next town, it was going to be really close. At 6pm we arrived at a very little town but the servo was shut. To petrol kms counter said 0kms to go so I know we were cutting it fine. Not knowing what to do we found the pub. In a little town like that everyone must know everyone and sure they would know the people who have the servo. Anyway we got a can full of petrol and went on our way to get fuel from the next town only a few Kms away. Made it to Tamworth, stayed the night and then headed to the Tamworth skatepark to get the gnar on. With our travel plan set via google maps, next stop was Mudgee. Following the path maps had laid out, we came to a gravel track to the mountains. An abrupt handbrakey in the gravel,(as you do) we had to double check that this was the way, it was, so up very slowly into the winding gravel road we went up. Great scenery.

Arriving in Mudgee we had a sick ride with Billy at his local park. It was so good to see his local and stay in the house of Bill. Thursday was more driving, as we were heading out to Dubbo to ride the full pipe and capsule. It was a 3 hour drive there and back, just to ride the park for 2 hours, makes you wonder sometimes what and why. What a sick bowl, it’s huge. On the way back to Mudgee we took in Wentworth and had a quick ride on their clover bowl. That was big. Friday it was cold, I said Friday was cold, yes Friday was a very cold day. It was the day we headed to Sydney. It was time to see Paul Chamberlain. Our first stop was Lithgow. Now that has a sick park. Rad bowl, smooth and with good flow, the rest of the park is also rad. A quick tourist stop at the Three Sisters in Katoomba was taken in before riding at Lawson skatepark and then a very cold ride at one of the smallest bowl set ups I’ve ever seen in Katoomba. They are about 2 foot deep. The main park in Katoomba is getting a makeover so we rode the small one instead with local Xave Koen. It was, as always rad fun.

Arriving in Sydney about 7pm was traffic hectic. Greetings were given to Paul and wife Jen and two month old Beatrix before riding to Newtown for dinner and drinks. After the pub shut at 12 we went to another bar that was not much good. Paul really wanted to go into the city. With a simple trick of, “there is a chip shop just up here to get chips” we found ourselves in the city and at the Oprah House at 1:30am. A bit more riding, and back to Newtown for 2:30am. Then more riding back to Paul’s. It was one of the most fun times I’ve had in Sydney, just riding around and chilling. Friday was a massive long day for me with being awake for 22 hours it was good to get to sleep at 4am Saturday.

After such a large day Saturday was a chill day, we had a chill ride at Paul’s local park Dulwich Hill, hung out at Hell on Wheels and then a ride at Hyde Park in the late arvo. Sunday after a very late breakfast we took in Bondi and then finished up at Five Dock skatepark. Monday was the last day, so it was off to Monster Park. David wanted to get his shred on and as usual shred he did, even with a sore back from sleeping on random floors, sofas and beds. We made it back to Paul’s just in time for him to get home from work and headed again to Dully (Dulwich Hill) for one more ride.

The 12 days just went by so fast but it seemed that we were on the road for weeks. It’s kinda strange that for my holiday I did exactly what I do on any other weekend. Drive long distances, visit skateparks and have good times, sometimes I’m not sure where work and holiday start and finish. I got to visit many friends, ride new parks, see new things and enrich my life a bit more. No matter what, get yourself out of the box you’re in and travel, to a new spot, around your city, across your country or around the world. It’s the best education you can ever receive.”

Kim Bloodson checks in from Africa

twitterlinkedinmail

Freestyle Now squad member Kim Bloodson  has been in Africa of about three weeks now. He is having a blast and spent the first few weeks in Durban and are now in Capetown. Kim has sent in a quick update and a few snap shots, read on.

Kim and Andy in Africa 1

“Hey there you hungry little freaks. Well as you may know I’m South Africa riding some very rad things. The scene here is just the same as home and the level of riding is amazing to say the least. Giant universities and secret spots hidden deep in the African savannah, trail jams, and to kill yourself street spots.

Kim and Andy in Africa 3

I spent a night in a Zulu village. Woke up at 6am and climbed the biggest mountain I’ve ever seen, nearly died heaps, then went swimming in waterfalls and teached some Zulu kids how to ride trails and changes some lives, rad fun. I also slept a night in the BMX direct warehouse. It was a night of madness.

Kim and Andy in Africa 2

Cape town is a crazy place, got searched for guns at the scariest nightclub I’ve ever seen, a small dreadlocked lesbian threatened to stab me in my sleep and cut of my moustache. Crazy scene.
Remember when your mum would say THERE ARE STARVING KIDS IN AFRICA THAT WOULD LOVE YOUR DINNER? Well it’s true man, so listen to your mama… Now get outside and ride you little freaks and remember GOOD THINGS DON’T COME TO THOSE THAT WAIT!!!!! Get busy…. Haven’t taken any real photos yet, just having too much fun…
Love from your friendly Bloodson xox.”
