Shaun Jarvis – May 2014 travel video part 1

twitterlinkedinmail

Freestyle Now squad member Shaun Jarvis is having a busy month of May. He recently came back from a 10 day trip to Canberra and Melbourne. With only two days in his home town of Perth he has ventured off to Brisbane where he is currently in the remote town of Cunnamulla some 840kms west of Brisbane. Next weekend Shaun along with Hudson Goodchild and David Pinelli will be travelling up to Exmouth in the northwest to host a coaching session. Shaun sent in a few words about his part 1 travel video for the month of may.

“Canberra was good fun. I headed out to Tumut about 200kms from Canberra to host a skatepark coaching session taking some Canberra shredders with me to assist with the session, was good to have Mike Ross, Troy Harradine and Jayden Poidevin along with me. It was so cold that it started to have light snow towards the end of the session. Spent a day just hanging in Canberra before heading to Melbourne where I spent a week just hanging out with friends and riding, it was cold but a great week. I always seem to film stuff with my good camera and never really edit the footage together so for the month of May I decided to film using my phone and edit it on the go with a phone edit app. The result is this video. It’s dodgey and raw but shows what I did and saw and rode with over my 10 day trip. For me it’s something I can look back on with fond memories. I’m working on my next one from my Cunnamulla trip and will also have one done from our Exmouth trip later next week. Stay rad and have fun.”

High Wycombe skatepark competition – Round 10 Freestyle Now Western Australian Skatepark Series

twitterlinkedinmail

High Wycombe skatepark hosted round 10 of the Freestyle Now Western Australian Skatepark Series. The day was looking a bit gloomy with the weather but with everything in place it was all systems go. There was a good spectator turnout considering the weather situation and after the first round of scooter beginners it decided to unleash from above. With about an hour and a half break in competition while the rain came down and the park dried up it was back into it. Although the beginners only had one round the advanced class did get two rounds of skatepark competition in. Advanced scooter had some big trick thrown down and it was a tough contest between Ben Thomas and Jiordan Giacoppo with only 1 point between them for first and second, Ben took the win. We have to give a big shout out to the Shire of Kalamunda for their support and to our supporters Stowaway distribution, Sacrifice scooters and 4 skateboard Co for the support with prizes.

Since its inception in 1986 Freestyle Now has always been progressing. With this progression, new squad members are required. It’s not easy to find new squad members. The right qualities are required, a good vibe and attitude, the will to progress and not hell bent on being sponsored, and an overall ability to interact with our participants and skatepark competitions and coaching sessions. We would like to welcome our newest squad member added to our reserves squad, Mitch Harris. Mitch has been assisting Freestyle Now at many competitions and coaching sessions over the past few months and has been a great asset to our programs. Mitch can skate well and is always down to hit up a ledge session or street roll. He is currently studying psychology at university and can juggle both worlds of skate and study and excel in both. Welcome to the squad Mitch.

Golden Bay skatepark hosted round 9 of the Freestyle Now Western Australian Skatepark Series. This was the last competition in the City of Rockingham skatepark series where the winners in each of the advanced classes receive an invite to a special invite only competition that will take place in early July. There was a good mix of skatepark users throwing down some good skills. The competition was held midweek during the school holidays so the turnout was a bit on the light side but gave the younger competitors a good opportunity. Lots of thanks to the City of Rockingham and Natasha for all her continual work with the youth of the area. Also to our supporters Stowaway distribution, Sacrifice scooters and 4 skateboard Co for the support with prizes.

Kalgoorlie skatepark competition – Round 8 Freestyle Now Western Australian Skatepark Series

twitterlinkedinmail

Kalgoorlie skatepark hosted round 7 of the Freestyle Now Western Australian Skatepark Series. The new additions to the skatepark have been rolling for about a year now and the locals sure have made the most of it. Kalgoorlie now has one of the best skatepark in Western Australia, by far. What makes a good skatepark? It has got to have good flow, a good mix of ramps and obstacles be well built and also allowing multiple users without the risk of crossing paths for collisions. The older part of the park is about 12-13 years old now and the new additions have created a large park with good participant use. The new bowl is amazing and has endless flow. On competition day the locals made good use of the new park with many new users showing their skills advancement. There was a good mix of participants in the categories and spectators were good. It is great to see that with the new skatepark the scene in Kalgoorlie is still strong. Thank you to the City of Kalgoorlie Boulder and to our supporters Stowaway distribution, Sacrifice scooters and 4 skateboard Co for the support with prizes.

Mandurah Action Sports Games – BMX Park

twitterlinkedinmail

The 2014 Mandurah Action Sports Games was one of Australia’s largest Action sports events. About 120000 people attended the event over the two days. The event host a round of the International Waterski & Wakeboard Federation worlds cup along with skateboard, scooter and bmx competitions and so much more over the two days. The skateboard, scooter and bmx competitors for 2014 were competing for $20000 prize money.
The BMX park competition saw some amazing riding from riders all around Australia. With a total of 16 competitors the qualifying rounds on Saturday were intense. Only 10 would make it to the semi finals on the Sunday and only the top five would get a run in the finals. With $4250 prize money up for grabs many were hungry for the top spots.
The boy from Brazil Luiz Paulo only just scraped into the finals and too the tenth spot. Good to see. Nathan Phelps took the 9th spot. A front flip from wedge to jump box lander had the crowd going wild. He took a moment or two to set this up and on his first try nailed it. His 720 over the box was crazy. Not sure why he did not place higher. Collie Waz, aka Warren Bowers took out the 8th place in true Wazza style. 7th place went to Jacob DeAbrue who injures his knee on the Saturday and it showed. Uninjured he would have place much higher. Jarrod Minniecon rode the park like no one else. Some great lines and his gap from the jump box lander to feeble on the hubber was insane. Jay Wilson was no surprise to be in the top 5. He grew up riding the Mandurah park and knows the place well. His flow and dexterity was pure bliss to watch. Good use of the park with a good mixture of tricks and styles earned him a well deserving 5th place. Dylan Schmidt took out the win in 2013 and was looking good to repeat. Going into the finals leading the points all the way. His first run in the finals was a banger, tricking everything he hit, rails ledges, box, quarters he was on form. His second run he just seemed be in default mode and unfortunately hampered his scores but a well deserving 4th place. Brock Horneman took out the win in the halfpipe battle jam the day before, he was pumped. Massive no hander backflips, flair whips and 360 variations helped him take the 3rd place. Laurence Bakewell spent the week before in Melbourne and it must have helped. The guy was on fire. So good to watch. In his finals he hit the jump box backwards with a double whip, bar spin on the quarter and then a clean triple whip over the box. He rode so good and clean. Jack Fahey looked like he was just casually riding around the park with no fixed plan or even in a competition. and then he would hit something and bang, amazing would take place. Front flips on the little wedge box, superman back flips, crazy flow over the skatepark and then to finish it with his banger, front flip drop in on the jump box. The crowd was loud. A well earned 1st place and $1500.
Thank you goes out to Eventscorps, City of Mandurah, Mambo and Murdoch University for sponsoring the event and letting such a rad competition go down. Looking forward to 2015.

The skateboard, scooter and bmx competitors for 2014 were competing for $20000 prize money. The skateboard park competition was insane. On the Saturday the competitors went through the qualifying round in the hope to make it to the finals on Sunday for their share in the $4250 prize money.
On Sunday 9 competitors went into the quarter finals with 3 groups of 3 having a 5 minute jam to smash out some skating. From the top nine it was taken down to the top 6 for the semi finals. It was a tough competition to judge as the skill level was insane with all skaters having different styles and flow. In the semis the competitors really pushed it and used many of the various portable ramps in the hope to help gain more points in difficulty and diversity. Issa Hassan was showing good form and was having lots of fun with 6th. Connor Harrington is moving on up in the skate world and at Mandurah he showed why. Great still, consistent and good use of the skatepark 5th. Harry Clark took 4th place. Harry is the goods and skates so well, but just could not get into the top 3 that is how close the competition was. In the finals it was looking as if Dylan Tomlinson was going to take the win, but with a broken board from the semis he was on a borrowed board in the finals. It must have messed with things as he was killing out there but just not as consistent as in all the other rounds, 3rd place. Joe Bothams was on a mission. Rails, lines, lips, tricks, and straight out flow earned him a second place. Barry Mansfield had the board under his feet with what seemed like elastic glue. So consistent, good use of park, good lines and tricks and the flow, yes the flow was so good. A well earned 1st place and $1500.
A big thanks to Eventscorps, City of Mandurah, Mambo and Murdoch University for sponsoring the event and giving the competitors an opportunity to have such a rad competition to roll in.
