BREMER BAY SKATEPARK COMPETITION – JANUARY 2022

twitterlinkedinmail

Freestyle Now hosted Bremer Bay’s second skatepark competition for the Bremer bay community resource centre thanks Healthways and the Shire of Jerramungup. The day before the competition Freestyle Now hosted a skatepark coaching session. Lots of participants learnt new skills and gained confidence with navigating the skatepark. Freestyle Now also spoke to the participants about how a skatepark competition is judged and how to plan out a competition run. At the competition many of the participants put this advice to good use. The competition was well attended by the town of Bremer Bay with many spectators and supporters, which was great to see. At the end of the competition all the participants no matter their placing took home a prize. It was also good to see some participants entering more than one discipline, yeah more prizes. A big thank you to the Bremer bay community resource centre. Be sure to check our coming events page for more information on all of our coming events. A full list of all the competitions that freestyle Now has hosted can be found on the past competitions page here.

Skatepark competitions are a fun time to hang with friends and put all the skills you have learnt to the test. Bremer Bay had lots of fun. More photos can be found on our Facebook page here.

2021 Western Australian BMX freestyle state championships

twitterlinkedinmail

On a fine sunny 13th Day of December 2021 many BMX riders descended onto the Bayswater skatepark to partake in the finals of the 2021 Western Australian BMX freestyle state championships. The day was fantastic and well attended by participants and spectators. A great display of BMX freestyle skills was put on by the participants. Currently Western Australia is the only state that is holding BMX freestyle state championships and this being the 3rd one with 2019 and 2020 held prior. The competition at Bayswater was the finals in a 3 competition series. Round 1 was held at the Mandurah Action Sports Games in May and round 2 at the Groundswell festival Zambrero BMX bowl battle in October. Points were awarded to competitors at each of these competitions with the rider with the highest points taking the 1st place and claiming the state champion title. Round 1 and the finals were an even points round with round 2 being an odd points round. Check the  table at the bottom of the post to see the final results and placings.

On the day of the competition there was a riders choice vote for the most improved rider, the raddest rider and future Olympian. Over the course of the year many riders deemed it to be Jake Welhan who has improved the most so he got to claim the medal for that. Well done Jake, your one footer tabletops are the raddest. Ruby Rose Welhan was the third competitor to roll out on the day and midway through her first run took a massive slam of cross bar to the mouth, blood was all over the place as she had really given her lip a trauma of great proportion. After some first aid and ice everyone was shocked to see her out there ready for her second run. This act of radness was definitely the key factor on her winning the raddest rider medallion by riders vote. Well done Ruby Rose, see you at the next competition. It was without a doubt that Bianca Martin won the future Olympian medal. We saw that coming right from the get go. Let hope that the riders vote come true and your determination and radness pays off and Bianca represents Australia in the 2032 Olympics.

Congratulations to all the competitors and BMX appreciated your support. Remember the more you attend competitions the more BMX grows.

Clockwise from top left – Ryan Aquilina took the state championship title. He grew up riding Bayswater skatepark and knows the park better than anyone. his lines and flow were so rad to watch. This boost in the horseshoe is way rad. – Roman Riches-Depiazzi is progressing with his tricks well and and consistency is growing. Sending a tailwhip of the beast is a combination of both. 1st in intermediates and winner of the state championship title. – Ruby Rose Whelhan just before her cross bar slammed into her face, but she was ready for her next run and won the riders vote for the raddest rider – Over 50 year old Gareth Evens jumping the beast on his way to 4th in the over 35’s.

Clockwise from top left – Ray Houghton entered the over 35’s class and won the championship. – Albie Livesley rode in the under 10’s and beginners and blasted high airs in both. He went home as state champion in both. Albie will be moving up to the intermediate class for 2022. – The future Olympian Bianca Martin is the 2021 girls champion and also place 2nd overall in the under 10’s and beginners. Her determination is what future Olympians require. – Jack Quinlan is the youngest competitor at age 5 and he powers through the skatepark like a seasoned professional. Thanks for supporting BMX Jack.

twitterlinkedinmail

Freestyle Now heading on out to the wheatbelt town of Kellerberrin to perform BMX stunt shows at the Kellerberrin Agricultural show. Freestyle Now has performed at the Kellerberrin show a few times over the past 26 years first in 1995 then in 2005 and 2013 and 2016. So it was good to be back and ready to roll out the rad for the crowds. Freestyle Now squad members Shaun JarvisJosh Garwood and Luke Tooze were also joined by Dylan Schmidt. The wind picked up on the day so the middle was taken out of the jump to make it smaller so the BMX stunt shows performers did not get too blown around in the air, Yes it was that windy. Even with the ramp shortened up big tricks were being performed. Freestyle Now came to roll out the rad and entertain the masses at the Kellerberrin show and that is what we achieved. When it comes to entertainment Freestyle Now definitely has you covered with a high entertainment value bmx stunt show. Make sure you check out our coming events page to see where the next Freestyle Now stunt shows will be going down. If you would like this type of great entertainment at your next event please get in contact with Freestyle Now with your requirements. Tackling mental health with BMX – Freestyle Now RU OK day at Mindarie Collage

twitterlinkedinmail

Freestyle Now attended the Mindarie Collage for a school assembly presentation as part of R U OK day. Freestyle Now squad members Shaun Jarvis, Josh Garwood and Luke Tooze were at the school to roll out the rad.. The presentations main focus was to talk about mental health. Due to the rain on the day the set up took place in the undercover area. Just before the lunch break the secondary school students got a chance to come and watch the BMX show. The BMX riders performed some great BMX stunts and tricks that the students were super hyped with. In the middle of the presentation Freestyle Now squad member Shaun Jarvis took to the microphone to talk about the importance of speaking and listening about mental health. It is important to speak about how you are feeling but it is also just as important to listen when someone is not feeling mentally well. When your friend or family member talks to you about how they are feeling it does not always mean you need to fix their problems. Sometimes just speaking to someone who is listening helps. Please remember to ask people R U OK if you can see a change in their mannerisms. Sometimes all it takes to help someone is to ask R U OK.

A Freestyle Now school assembly presentation can be tailored to suite whatever message the school is currently delivering to its students. If you want Freestyle Now to come to your school for a school assembly please get in contact with Freestyle Now with your requirements. A full list of all the stunt shows that Freestyle Now has done since 1986 can be found on our past stunt show page. 2021 DownUnderGround – The Australian BMX flatland championships

twitterlinkedinmail

2021 DownUnderGround, the Australian BMX flatland championships number 13 was a video only contest due to travel restriction within Australia. For whatever reason the number of riders who entered was smaller than past years even though the concept was changed this year so riders could submit multiple clips in their video up to 2 ½ minutes. We did get two new riders entered into the beginner class that we have not seen in an Australian flatland competition, this was super rad. As we did for last year we invited the judges, Paul Chamberlain and Joe Cicman and James McGraw, to offer commentary, competition run reviews and general banter on the final video. Freestyle Now squad member Shaun Jarvis took out the 2nd place in the expert class.

Competition format – Each judge scores each category out of 20 points;
Difficulty – How difficult and complex the tricks are.
Flow / smoothness – A riders ability to control their bike and make the combos flow.
Variety – Range of tricks, types of tricks, combinations of tricks, front and rear wheel usage, backwards and forwards. This can take into account range of techniques (spinning, turbining, rolling, scuffing, stationary, pumping…)

The best possible score from one judge per video run is 60 points. The three judges points are added together to determine the winner and place getters.

Thank you to DownUnderGound supporters – Freestyle Now , Colony BMX

Shaun Jarvis October skatepark video

twitterlinkedinmail

Shaun heading down the rail at Kwinana skatepark

Freestyle Now co founder and squadron leader Shaun Jarvis has been riding BMX for 40 years and he is not slowing down just yet at 53 years of age. During September and October Freestyle Now hosted many skatepark coaching sessions and after each of the sessions Shaun set the goal to get clips at each location. Some time there was only a few minutes to work out lines and get the clips done. Shaun explains “BMX freestyle for me is a organic process, what flows is how it is, nothing is forced. Looking at the spot and thinking how can I interact with what’s here and how does my riding fit with the location. Many of the clips are just freestyled, no set plan just as it flowed out. Some took longer than should have and some were a one and done. Over all I’m stoked on the clips.”
