Freestyle Now Brings High-Energy Action to Bremer Bay Skatepark Competition

Freestyle Now hosted an exhilarating skatepark competition at Bremer Bay skatepark. Although we had rain on the day we powered through to achieve the goal of another well run skatepark competition. Prior to the competition, we conducted an engaging skatepark coaching session where participants learned new skills and gained confidence in navigating the park. They also received invaluable tips on how a skatepark competition is judged and how to plan their competition run.

During the competition, many participants put this advice into practice, resulting in a thrilling event that was well-attended by the town of Bremer Bay. All participants received prizes, regardless of their placing.

Action-Packed Competition at Kwinana Skatepark for Round 2 of the Ride and Roll Series!

The Kwinana skatepark was buzzing with energy and talent as competitors from across the region gathered for Round 2 of the South Metro Ride and Roll Skatepark Series. This series comes as a combined effort from City of Mandurah, Kwinana, Cockburn and Rockingham. This event saw a good turnout of participants across scooter, skateboard, BMX, and rollerskate. A special thanks to the City of Kwinana for their massive support, making this event possible and providing a platform for riders of all ages and skill levels to showcase their talents.

In the Scooter 10-13 Years category, Jonathan Maiwald took the top spot, followed by Eli Stokes in second place and Keon Himiona in third. Hayden Brewer clinched first place in the Scooter 14-17 Years division. The Scooter Open category was fiercely contested, with Brazilian shredder Ian Tsuzuki Botta emerging victorious over the local heavy hitters Jeremy Clowry and Reef Morrison..

The Skateboard 14-17 Years division had young Miles Harding take first place with his impressive spine skills and ledge grinds. Ollie Hughes rolled into second. In the Skateboard Open category, Ian Tsuzuki Botta represented another discipline, showcasing his versatility. 

BMX action was equally thrilling, with Zack Ballantyne winning the BMX 10-13 Years category, followed by Jaxon Baker and Lachlan Mcgough in second and third. Oskar Thomas dominated the BMX 14-17 Years division showing his large range of skills, and in the BMX Open category it was an intense battle between Kody Strong and Joshua O’Neil with Kody being victorious winning by 2 points

The Rollerskate Open division showcased incredible talent, with Braeden Taylor, one of the strongest park rollerskaters in WA taking first place, followed by Sara McIntosh in second, both Bread and Sara are SOR locals who love to shred at Kwinana. Freestyle Now squad member Chloe Rose came in third place, always bringing the heat and the comradery, and Shae Mann coming in 4th, a new face in the competition who we were happy to see get involved. 

The Kwinana skatepark competition was a testament to the vibrant and supportive community that thrives in these action sports. Riders of all ages and genders demonstrated remarkable skills and sportsmanship, creating an unforgettable day of competition. Thank you to everyone who participated, and a huge shout out to the City of Kwinana for making this event a reality.

Mandurah Skatepark Competition – Kicking Off the South Metro Ride and Roll Skatepark Series

The Mandurah Skatepark Competition, held on the 8th of January 2024, marked the exciting first round of the South Metro Ride and Roll Skatepark Series. This series comes as a combined effort from City of Mandurah, Kwinana, Cockburn and Rockingham. This event brought together riders of all ages and skill levels to compete in BMX, scooter, skateboard, and rollerskate categories. Thanks to the generous support of the City of Mandurah, the competition saw a fantastic turnout and an electrifying atmosphere.

In the scooter division, young talents showcased their skills with Eli Stokes securing 1st place in the 10-13 years category, followed by Keon Himiona in 2nd place. In the 14-17 years category, Josh Schnierer claimed the top spot with an impressive performance. The Scooter Open class saw fierce competition with Zac James Moore taking 1st place, Cody Richardson coming in 2nd, and Ian Tsuzuki Botta finishing 3rd.

Skateboarders also brought their A-game to the Mandurah Skatepark. In the 10-13 years category, Tayah Payne took 1st place, demonstrating exceptional skill and determination. The 14-17 years category witnessed a thrilling contest, with Gogo Dale who traveled all the way from Margaret River to compete, securing 1st place and Miles Harding following closely in 2nd place.

The BMX division was a bit light on riders with only 3 competing but that did not stop the radical action from Jaxon Baker who took 1st place in the 10-13 years category with Mathiaus Dawkins earning 2nd place. Kody Strong represented the BMX open class, it was great to have him demonstrating his skills and talent. 

Roller skaters added their flair to the event with Evie White taking 1st place in the Beginners category and Priya Feazey coming in 2nd, huge congratulations to these skaters for competing in a competition for the first time. In the Rollerskate Opens, Chloe Rose wowed the crowd and judges alike, securing 1st place with her stunning performance followed by Kiara O’Leary in 2nd, Jessica O’Leary in 3rd, Suzie O’Leary in 4th. The O’Leary family traveled all the way from Geraldton and it was awesome to have them compete in our Rollerskate Open Category.

The Mandurah skatepark competition not only highlighted the amazing talent across BMX, scooter, skateboard, and rollerskate disciplines but also fostered a sense of community and camaraderie among the participants. The event was a huge success, thanks in large part to the unwavering support of the City of Mandurah. 2023 Western Australian BMX freestyle State Championships

Isaac Berryman came away with 1st place in the Open Class, well deserved as I’m sure you can appreciate from this huge backflip, which believe it or not was not the most impressive trick he brought to the comp. His unmatched consistency and inspiring style set him apart, and we can’t wait to see what the future holds for this incredible rider.

The 2023 Western Australian BMX Freestyle State Championships recently took center stage at the renowned Bayswater Skatepark, one of Western Australia’s premier destinations. Against the backdrop of this top-tier facility, riders from across the state converged to showcase their skills and vie for top honors in various categories.

In the BMX Under 11’s division, young riders demonstrated their burgeoning skills with impressive runs and daring maneuvers. Congratulations to Jayce Blakers for claiming the top spot, followed closely by Samuel Evans and Zack Ballantyne, who secured second and third place, respectively. The future of BMX looks bright with such talented riders leading the way. Moving on to the BMX Under 15’s category, riders unleashed their creativity and technical prowess on the course. Liam Miller emerged victorious with amazing bike control and flow that is well about his age bracket, he clinching the first-place title, with Jake Welhan and Oskar Thomas taking second and third place, respectively. Their flawless execution and innovative tricks captivated audiences and showcased the depth of talent in the youth category. In the BMX Over 15’s division, riders demonstrated their mastery of the sport, delivering high-flying airs and gravity-defying stunts. Jay Furukawa claimed the top spot, followed by Bayswater locals Tim Pearson and Gavin Penny, who secured second and third place, respectively. Their exceptional skill and dedication to their craft were evident throughout the competition. Finally, in the fiercely competitive BMX Open category, riders battled it out for supremacy on the course. Congratulations to Izac Berryman for emerging victorious and securing the first-place title. Todd Henshall, Jack Carwardine, and Kody Strong rounded out the top four, showcasing their talent and tenacity in the face of stiff competition.

DownUnderGround – The Australian BMX flatland national championships 2023 – Celebrating 15 Years of BMX Flatland Excellence

DownUnderGround 2023 marked a milestone year for BMX flatland enthusiasts, as riders from across Australia and beyond converged for the 15th edition of this iconic competition held in Melbourne. Despite challenging weather conditions, the event proved to be one of the best yet, showcasing the resilience and passion of the BMX community. Amidst the unpredictable weather, riders found refuge in a small dry spot at the IMAX, where they showcased their skills and creativity. The confined space added an electrifying energy to the atmosphere, fueling the excitement and intensity of the competition. While some riders grappled with adapting to the limited space, others thrived, demonstrating their versatility and adaptability on the flatland. The event featured a diverse array of riding styles, highlighting the rich tapestry of talent within the BMX community. One of the standout moments of the competition was the participation of Gonzalo Bellanti, the reigning 2022 Australian BMX flatland champion, who joined the event live from Japan via video. His presence added a surreal and unforgettable dimension to the competition, showcasing the global reach and dedication to BMX flatland. The success of DownUnderGround 2023 would not have been possible without the support and dedication of everyone involved. From the riders who brought their A-game to the judges, volunteers, and supporters who ensured the smooth running of the event, each contribution was invaluable. Freestyle Now extends its gratitude to the sponsors – Colony BMX, Sneaky Wholefoods, Arctic BMX, and Penumbra BMX – for their unwavering support of this prestigious competition. Haditri Bagus took the win in the expert division, but only just. There was a 1 minute run off between Haditri and Grant Cruise with Grant just missing out and taking the 2nd place

In the open division at the 2023 DUG Botay Agata was on fire, unstoppable and taking the Australian championship.

Freestyle Now BMX Stunt Show Makes a Grand Return to Osborne Park Agricultural Show

After 18 years Freestyle Now marked its triumphant return to the Osborne Park Agricultural Show, creating a BMX stunt show spectacle that thrilled audiences and left an indelible mark on the event’s history. The Osborne Park Show hadn’t experienced the presence of Freestyle Now since 2005, and the excitement for their comeback was at an all-time high. The stellar lineup of riders included  Luke Tooze and Jack Carwardine, both bringing their unique style and skills to the forefront. Joining them were Izac Berryman, a rising star in the BMX world who was double backflipping the jump and Western Australian BMX legend Dempsey who threw down a perfect 720 for the crowd showing that he still has plenty of BMX skills to show. From gravity-defying stunts to jaw-dropping tricks, Freestyle Now’s performance at the Osborne Park Agricultural Show was a testament to their unwavering commitment to pushing the boundaries of BMX entertainment. The riders seamlessly blended their skills, captivating the audience with a dynamic mix of aerial maneuvers and technical brilliance. The return to Osborne Park after 18 years was met with overwhelming enthusiasm from both longtime fans who remembered the 2005 show and new spectators experiencing Freestyle Now’s BMX magic for the first time. The riders’ dedication and the vibrant energy of the crowd created an unforgettable atmosphere.

Bassendean Skatepark Competition brings the heat

The scorching summer sun did little to deter the vibrant energy at the Bassendean skatepark competition, where riders of all ages and skill levels gathered for a sizzling showcase of skateboarding, scootering, and BMX action. Despite the soaring temperatures, the atmosphere remained electric, with every participant, from first-timers to seasoned enthusiasts, sporting smiles as wide as their impressive tricks. Skateboarders landed their tricks for the first time, and enthusiastic newcomers revealed in the thrill of entering their inaugural competition. A standout trend of the day in the BMX beginners was the seat stand, standing on the seat, a creative and crowd-captivating maneuver that showcased the BMX community’s inventiveness. The open scooter division took the crowd’s excitement to new heights with its high-energy performances, while the entire community came together to cheer on every participant, fostering an inclusive and supportive environment. Todd Hanshall, in the open BMX category, stole the show with a performance that delighted everyone in attendance. However, the standout of the day was undeniably Ian Tsuzuki Botta, who entered every division with an infectious smile, epitomizing the sheer joy and fun that action sports bring. The Bassendean Skatepark Competition was a true testament to the dedication of the riders and the vibrant community that supports them. Freestyle Now extends its appreciation to all participants, spectators, the town of Bassendean and the Bassendean youth services and everyone who contributed to making this event a success.

Freestyle Now rolled into the heart of Country Victoria at the Cobram Agricultural Show, delivering two days of electrifying BMX stunt show performances that left spectators in awe. The stellar lineup featured Freestyle Now co-founder and leader, Shaun Jarvis, a trailblazer in the BMX world known for his precision and distinctive style. Joining him were seasoned professional Andrew Ahumada, renowned for pushing the boundaries with his technical expertise, and the heavy hitter Sam Grace, whose fearless approach to tricks always steals the show. Adding an international flair to the ensemble was the Colombian giant, Robin Meza, whose precision tailwhips and bar spins left an indelible mark on the Cobram crowd. The picturesque setting of the Cobram Agricultural Show provided the perfect canvas for Freestyle Now’s BMX mastery. Shaun Jarvis, Andrew Ahumada, Sam Grace, and Robin Meza seamlessly blended their skills, showcasing a dynamic mix of gravity-defying stunts, jaw-dropping tricks, and flawless execution. The show routines were nothing short of fabulous, featuring daring maneuvers where riders soared over their colleagues and executed multiple tricks back-to-back. In some shows, it felt like a friendly competition among the riders to outdo each other with increasingly impressive tricks, creating a fun and engaging atmosphere for both the riders and the enthralled crowds. From the initial jump to the closing act, the Freestyle Now crew had the audience on the edge of their seats, orchestrating an unforgettable experience that celebrated the essence of BMX riding. The riders’ dedication and the enthusiastic response from the Cobram community underscored the success of the show.

Freestyle Now brought the BMX excitement to South Yunderup for the Shire of Murray’s Bike It for Bike Month event, showcasing their thrilling BMX stunt show amidst bicycle-related activities. Despite challenging weather conditions, the Freestyle Now crew, led by Kim on the mic, delivered a stellar performance that left a lasting impression. Michelle from the Shire of Murray expressed her admiration for the Freestyle Now crew, describing them as “absolutely amazing” and commending their professionalism and friendliness. Kim’s engaging commentary not only highlighted the other providers present but also resonated well with both kids and parents in attendance. The turnout may have been hampered by dark clouds, sprinkling rain, and gusty winds throughout the day, but the Freestyle Now crew rose to the occasion, showcasing their skills with unwavering enthusiasm. The BMX stunts performed were truly awesome, captivating the audience and adding an adrenaline-pumping edge to the Bike It for Bike Month event.
