Freestyle Now travelled to Meekatharra for the Meekatharra Outback festival to perform some bmx stunt shows. Meekatharra is 750kms north east from Perth. On the trip for the show performance was Freestyle Now squad member, show veteran and co founder Shaun Jarvis along with Josh Garwood and guest riders all of who have performed bmx stunt shows with Freestyle Now before, Luke Tooze and Nathan Dobbie. The journey out to Meekatharra was a long 12 hour drive and a 12 hour drive back home.
Freestyle Now set up the portable jump box on the street in Meekatharra and proceeded to perform six bmx stunt shows over the course of the day. Freestyle Now performed some great entertaining bmx stunt shows with many rad tricks taking place. The three day journey was epic with good times taking place as always. Freestyle Now recently performed some bmx stunt shows at the 2019 Perth Sky show. The day was warm and sunny and the crowds were loud. As always with the Perth Sky show people gradually build during the afternoon till it is packed toward the end of the afternoon. Freestyle now performed some amazing bmx stunt shows throughout the day, the audience were really getting into it and making lots of noise. As the crowds were bring in the noise the Freestyle Now squad got more amped up to roll out the rad. Our youngest rider and recruits squad member Taj Hamilton performed his first bmx stunt show last year at the Perth Sky show and this year he up it by dong his first back flip over the jump box. He was ecstatic and so were the squad who all raced to him to congratulate him. Reserves squad member Jack Carwardine got amped up from Taj doing the back flip and decide to do his first front flip over the jump box. He was so stoked. It was a great show, the crowds at were amazing, with every show having great numbers of spectators all coming to see the radical bmx stunt show that Freestyle Now was performing.

DownUnderGround is the Australian bmx flatland championships and the 1st December saw the finals hit the iconic location of the Melbourne Imax. Bmx flatland riders from around Australia and the world converged on Melbourne to partake in one of the hardest forms of bmx riding, flatland. It was good to see a great turnout with a few international riders attending. This was the tenth year of DownUnderGround, the first contest took place in Perth in November 2008. Over the past 10 years many riders have attended at various locations around Australia to compete and have fun. In Australia bmx flatland riders would rarely get to hang out if it was not for DownUnderGround. It’s not just about a competition, it’s a time for riders to come together, share tricks have good times and build the bmx flatland scene in Australia.
David Rooney is progressing well in the beginner class ad took another win in Melbourne for DUG 10.
There have been many changes with DownUnderGround over the ten years. When it first started there were four contests around Australia, now there is only on physical contest along with the video contest, this makes travelling easier for the riders. Melbourne has the biggest bmx flatland scene in Australia so it makes perfect sense to hold the contest where the majority of riders live.

In the beginners class heading into the contest it was Paul Griznic who had a great video entry and was sitting in fist place. He didn’t ride as consistent as he would have wanted to and only took a 3rd in Melbourne. His progression is good though and its rad to see that passion. In Melbourne it was local rider David Rooney who ended up taking the win from Rusty Eylward-Pyko in the beginners. David was just a little bit more consistent than Rusty but both rode well. With his first in the video round and a third in Melbourne it was Paul Griznic who to the year end title in the beginners class. What was great to see with all of the beginner riders was the willingness to give it a go and not care how sketchy they were, that is what is needed at more competitions.

In the expert class it was a close result between Philipp Frueh and Shaun Jarvis. These rider had scored 2nd and 3rd in the video round so only 5 points separated them going into the championships in Melbourne. With western Australian rider Trent Karow not at the competition it was up to Tasmanian rider Chris Letchford to ride well enough to take the win in the expert class with Philipp and Shaun taking the 2nd and 3rd spots respectively. With two seconds it was Philipp Frueh who took home the year end Australian championships title in the expert class. Good work Philipp.

The open class is was all about Agentinian rider Gonzalo Bellanti. With taking a first in the video round he was almost untouchable to take the year title. Indonesian rider Heru Anwari was present to keep the heat on him though. Heru won the Australian championships last year and was back to defend his title. With 3 run each the riders were able to be a bit more relaxed on the runs knowing that their lowest score would be dropped. Gonzalo had more combos completed and rode a bit more consistent than Heru who had some fast cross footed techniques but consistency defiantly held him back. So 1st to Gonzalo and 2nd to Heru. DownUnderGround veteran Paul Chamberlain took home the 3rd place in the open with some great riding but consistency was down.

DownUnderGround 10 was awesome. It had a great relaxed vibe. All the riders were happy with the new format of 3 runs and dropping the lowest run, it worked well. Planning has begun for DUG 11 which will no doubt take place in Melbourne towards the end of 2019 along with the video round announced around mid year.
In October 2018 Freestyle now headed to Japan to attend the legendary Flatark contest. With flight all book the contest was cancelled a few weeks prior the date, so it was still all systems go to head to Japan and go on a riding holiday. Freestyle Now squad members Shaun Jarvis and Paul Chamberlain headed from both sides of Australia while Dez Maarsen traveled from his home in The Netherlands. Meeting them in Kobe was Freestyle Now recruits rider and Osaka resident Naotada Yamada. Shaun Jarvis documented the 10 day trip with making a video of each of the day’s activities and riding. It was an awesome time with so much riding going on almost every day. The video highlights the Spaceark jam that happened in Kobe which took place due to Flatark not happening, and the Freestyle Now jam that took place the day after at Nagai Park in Osaka. While in Japan and in Osaka Freestyle Now also added young shredder and good friend of Naotada, Jigin Omotehara to our recruits squad. So much great riding took place. Also there are many riders from around the world who also were riding in Japan as well as so many of the Japanese bmx flatland riders. Give it a watch to see some amazing bmx flatland.

DownUnderGround is the Australian bmx flatland championships and has been going since 2008 with Freestyle Now being the competition organizer. Once again DownUnderGround will return to Melbourne for series 10 of the national competition on 1st December at the iconic Melbourne Imax in Carlton.
DownUnderGround also has a video contest to help riders earn points toward taking the Australian bmx flatland title. Riders submit a contest video between 1 and 2 minutes in length. The rider has to perform their tricks on camera as if they were at a physical contest. Riders are then judged according to the judging criteria. This year the video round judges were –

Freestyle Now headed to Geraldton to perform some bmx stunt shows at the 2018 Geraldton Sunshine festival. Freestyle Now squad members Shaun Jarvis, Dylan Schmidt, David Pinelli and Matt Adkins all performed some amazing bmx stunts throughout the day. The crowds at the Geraldton Sunshine festival were amazing, with every show having great numbers of spectators all coming to see the radical bmx stunt show that Freestyle Now were performing. The Freestyle now squad members worked the crowd with some of the most amazing bmx stunts that they had seen, Dylan Schmidt with his superman tailwhips, David Pinelli was doing 360 variations on every jump, Matt Adkins front flipping and Shaun Jarvis risking it by being jumped over while balancing on his bike on top of the jump ramp. RU OK day is a great initiative that encourages people to meaningfully connect and support those struggling with life through conversation. Its ok to ask someone RU OK, sometimes that’s all it takes to help someone out of a bad situation. We all have got the ability to make a difference if we care to ask, listen, and just regularly look after each other.
Freestyle Now headed to the Waroona school once again to do a school assembly presentation based around RU OK day. It was the fourth time that Freestyle Now has attended the school for such a presentation. Freestyle Now moved the ramps into the undercover location due to the rain and proceeded to roll out the rad with a great positive message.
Freestyle Now can come to your school and bring a great positive message to the students using the medium of bmx, scooter and skateboard radness.
Squad members Shaun Jarvis and Tyler Jennings also invited good friend Luke Tooze along to bring the message of positivity to the students during the school assembly presentation. Shaun spoke about the importance looking out for each other, as the signs of depression and mental illness are not always seen like other illnesses and sickness. He also spoke about how it’s the small things that you do that can have a large impact on other people’s lives and you would not know the importance that has played in that person’s life. The presentation was well received by all the students from all the grades. Question time followed after the presentation with the students asking many questions about riding and life in general, which was great to see.
Some of the action that went down on the day, the students loved it as you can tell with the amount of noise they were making.
Back in June Freestyle Now spent a week in the northwest of Australia to activate several skateparks. Pannawonica, Paraburdoo, Tom Price and Onslow were the target locations. Freestyle Now squad members Shaun Jarvis and Ben Thomas invited super skateboard guy Dylan Recce along for the trip to help roll out the rad to all of the locations.

Flying into Onslow on the Tuesday morning the first stop was Pannawonica only a few hours drive away. A great session with the local skatepark users, learning new skills and winning some rad prizes, it was a nice fun park to ride for sure. Wednesday morning the 6 hour drive began to Paraburdoo. Driving through the northwest of Australia is beautiful, so much colour and beauty. Arriving at the Parraburdoo skatepark to see lots of skatepark users all keen to get involved in some of the coaching and mini comps. Another fantastic session was had with a long bunnyhop session taking place with Jackson winning a set of Grit scooter handle bars. Jason had moved to Paraburdoo from Mt Isa in Queensland and had remembers the Freestyle Now comps a few years ago that we did in Mt Isa. Thursday morning was a short 1 hour drive to Tom Price. Tom Price park is rad with a good halfpipe. Again in the afternoon we held another skatepark activation session with some skatepark coaching workshops and mini comps. Returning to these skatepark on a regular basis is great when you chat to the riders and they show you their progress they have achieved form the skill development you gave them last time. On Friday after a 5 hour drive Onslow was the next stop. Freestyle Now had been attending Onslow on a semi regular bases over the last few months as part of an ongoing activation session with the community. Friday afternoon was a skatepark coaching session at the awesome Onslow skatepark with the level of skills starting to take hold with the participants. Saturday another activation session took place in the afternoon with a large cache of prizes to be given out. It was great to see the participation level very high with lots of people partaking in multiple disciplines all eager to win some of the rad prizes. Sunday morning was our final session with some more skills being taught and shown to the skatepark participants. Roll on Monday morning and it was the flight out of Onslow to return to Perth. Seven days in the north west was a rad time. Lots of skatepark participants got to win some rad prizes, get autographs and learn new skills, a great success. We would like to thank the Shire of Ashburton, BHP for their support and to all of the people who came to the skateparks to hang out and engage. Freestyle Now was invited to attend the Comet Bay College and host a school assembly presentation. The focus of the presentation was “E for effort” Freestyle Now squad members Shaun Jarvis, Dylan Schmidt and Ben Thomas and recruits squad member Karee Funeyvall were also joined by good friend Brendon Cross to show the students how putting in effort into your life can give you positive rewards. Being involved in BMX, Scooter and skateboarding required you to put in effort to learn new tricks. Sometimes these tricks can be an easy learn and not requiring too much effort and sometimes the tricks require so much effort to reach the goal of achievement. Landing a new trick after putting in so much effort is an amazing feeling. Learning new tricks and putting in effort is the same principle in all parts of your life. If you want something you need to put in the effort to get the reward.

Freestyle Now did four sessions, each to the years 7, 8, 9 and 10. During the school assembly presentation Freestyle Now performed lots of different BMX, scooter and skateboard tricks on the portable Freestyle Now ramps. Then at the mid way point Shaun Jarvis spoke to the students about how putting in effort give you the rewards you are seeking. Shaun also spoke about how putting effort into being kind has lots of positive effects to help have a kinder more accepting world. Some people don’t put effort into relating to other people which is a shame. Treating others with courtesy and respect also take effort. The students were encouraged to ask questions, with Shaun and the other Freestyle Now riders giving back some great answers on why they got into skateboarding, scooters and BMX. After discussion time it was back to rolling out the rad and letting the students see how putting in the effort in gets you the rewards you are seeking.
During the day there was a free period after lunch where a select number of students got to interact with the Freestyle now riders in a more personal way, hanging out, talking about life experience and how their efforts have given them rewards like contest success, international travel and great life memories. Positive role models with a positive message.

The Freestyle Now team came to Comet Bay College to present at our Year Group Assemblies, doing both a stunt show and a presentation. Their presentation tapped into the school’s key message for Term 2, ‘E for Effort’, and the professional BMX, skateboard and scooter riders showcased many impressive skills to students. Shaun Jarvis did an excellent job of connecting with and engaging our students. We appreciated Freestyle Now’s flexibility, professionalism and ability to deliver a key school message in a fresh and unique way. The Freestyle Now team were also more than willing to talk with students during recess and lunch, and feedback from both staff and students about the event was overwhelmingly positive.
