Round 1 – 2021 Western Australian BMX freestyle state championships

Round 1 of the Western Australian BMX freestyle state championships took place at the Mandurah Action Sports Games back in May. Round 1 was an even points round and round 2 will be a odds points round. Round 2 will be taking place at the Zambrero BMX bowl battle at Scarborough beach skatepark as part of the Groundswell festival on the 2nd October. These points will be added together going into the final competition, round 3 which will an even points round. The rider scoring the highest points taking the 2021 Western Australian BMX freestyle championship place.

Even points round – 1^st = 20, 2^nd = 18, 3^rd = 16, 4^th = 14, 5^th = 12, 6^th = 10, 7^th and down = 8

Odd points round – 1^st = 21, 2^nd = 19, 3^rd = 17, 4^th = 15, 5^th = 13, 6^th = 11, 7^th and down = 9

Mandurah Mazda Action Sports Games presented by Drug Aware – BMX competition May 2021

Luke Tooze is so bad ass. This 360 gap is so rad. Luke took 1^st place in pro and $500 cash. Luke rode the Mandurah skatepark and just sent trick after trick. Such a great run.

The Action Sports Games has been a staple of the competition scene for 10 years, the first taking place in Mandurah in 2011. After a few years the event moved to Bunbury and was held there for a few years and now it was back at Mandurah, held at the new Mandurah skatepark. What an amazing event the Mandurah Mazda Action Sports Games presented by Drug Aware was. The competition zone was the small bowl and street/plaza section so that it gave diversity to the competition so that competitors of many different styles and abilities could throw down. This was one of the biggest BMX competitions since the Western Australian BMX freestyle state championships held back in November. The Action Sports Games BMX competitions was postponed twice before it was finally held. The competition was set to take place on the Sunday of the Action Sports Games but the water falling from the sky put a stop to that, and then it was set for early May but Covid restrictions were in effect so it finally took place in a perfect sunny day. The BMX competition was well attended with large numbers of competitors all keen to roll out the rad and help support BMX. The beginners and intermediate had finals, their qualifying rounds were super tight in points. In the beginners after qualifying the top six moving into the finals was Harlan Pfeiffer and Albie Livesley tied on 66 points for first and then Kayden Taylor sitting in 3^rd with 60 points. 4^th was Harry Daley with 59 points and Brenten Waddingham and Bianca Martin sitting tied in 5^th with 57 points. Going into the finals it was a one between 4^th and 5^th. This was going to be a tight final. Harlan was able to take the win, with some good flowing and consistent lines. Coming in 2^nd and a well deserved place was Freestyle Now recruits squad member Albie Livesley, only 2 points behind. Brenten Waddingham upped it in the finals moving into 3^rd place. Kayden Taylor moved on down to 4^th. He rode really well but tried some harder tricks which lowered his consistency scores. He has lots of potential and we are sure we will see him taking podium really soon.

Albie won the under 10’s and a second in beginners with all the skills – Jack Quinlan is one of the youngest competitors at the age of 4 and ripped around the skatepark, expect to see more of him at competitions – Bianca Martin is a shredder. Bianca won the girls class and mixed it in the beginners for a 6^th place.

The intermediate class was super rad and fully stacked with lots of rad young riders. Ronan McCamish and Roman Depiazzi had tied for first place with 79 points in qualifying and were in the finals. Either of these two roadsters could take the win. Also making the finals in 3^rd place was Jake Welhan. Jake has the best one footer tabletops going at the moment and he did plenty of them in the competition. We need more trick like this coming on up that for sure, pure style. Shae Matthews also made it into the finals but after hitting up some 720’s in qualifying his ankle was cooked from landing off. Only 3 riders in the finals, any one of them could take the win. Ronan McCamish has a great style and flowed around the Mandurah small bowl effortless. A first place. Roman Depiazzi is moving on up the skill set super good. He is expanding his abilities almost on the daily. In the finals he was less consistent than in his qualifiers which dropped him a few points behind Ronan but a well deserving 2^nd place. Jake Welhan didn’t get the radness rolling in the finals. His game was off a bit. But he still managed to hit them one footed tabletops with that Jake style, a 3^rd place.

He has some rad one footer tabletops. Jake took 3^rd in intermediates – Shaun Jarvis the oldest competitor took the 3^rd in open, bike flip foot plant.

The open class had just 3 riders. 3^rd place went to Freestyle Now squadron leader Shaun Jarvis, second place was taken by Jack Hooper and first was Kieran Ramsey. These two riders ride completely different from each other. Jack is all grinds and lines while Kieran is all whips and flips. At the end of the two runs they both had a highest score of 82 points, it was a tie. To seek a tie breaker their firsts runs were looked at and Kieran had it with 80 points over 74 points for Jack. Congratulations Kieran. The pro class was all Luke Tooze. Power, flow, speed, big tricks. His 360 out of the bowl over the step up gap into the plaza section was just epic. A first place and $500 prize money. 2^nd place was west oz legend Ryan Aqulina. Riding like only Ryan can. Great use of the park both bowl and plaza and $300 prize money, he was stoked. 3rd place went to Jeremy Mills with some nice riding and good flow and winning $160.

The Mandurah Mazda Action Sports Games presented by Drug Aware BMX competition was a rad day. It put BMX in the spotlight. Big props to the under 10’s and girls competitors, the future is rad that for sure. It was unfortunate that the weather cancelled the competition on the weekend as the rest of the Action Sport Games but the important factor is the competition finally took place and the radness was rolled out. We would like to thank our competition supporters Colony BMX, Local BMX, United Bikes as well as all the BMX riders and spectators who came to the competition. Kalgoorlie skatepark competition April 2021

Freestyle Now hosted a skatepark competition at the world famous Kalgoorlie skatepark. One of the best skatepark in the world, it allows multiple users to use the skatepark all at the same time. The skatepark was built in 2001 and then had a major upgrade about 6 years ago. The skatepark is super awesome with great flow. This allows for great competitions and has a large assortment of obstacles and ramps to suit everyone’s styles and skill levels. The lines at the Kalgoorlie skatepark are endless. The competition took place on a Saturday afternoon after Freestyle Now hosted a skatepark coaching session in the morning. A big thank you to the youth team at the City of Kalgoorlie Boulder and also to our supporters Grit Scooter, The 4 skateboard co and Colony BMX. Mandurah Mazda Action Sports Games presented by Drug Aware – Scooter competition April 2021

Jarod Colwell had so many tricks at the Mandurah Mazda Action Sports Games. This super grab over the box was so clean and dialed just like all of his other tricks. A true professional skilled scooter rider.

The pro class was off the hook and Jarod Colwell was hanging off another hook that was well and truly off the first hook. His runs were something else. His backflip from flat down a gap was the wildest thing of the contest, totally came from nowhere and erupted the crowd for sure. His first place in the pro class and $500 cash winnings could never be disputed. Taking 2^nd place in the pro class was Corey Vandam with $250, his 540 flairs was so spot on and clean. Another OG taking third was Jae Yates only 3 points behind Corey. A few inconsistencies in a few tricks may have been the issue as it certainly was not his lack of skills. Consistency is key in competitions. Adam Puffler was only 1 point behind Jae, Adam has defiantly moved up the skills ladder since he won the intermediates class at the 2018 Action Sports Games. Kash Toft is on the up and rise, it’s a name to know for next year’s pro class. Kash was only one point behind Adam, yeah the pro class was a super tight competition. Kash as some rad skills that if the progress is still there could be a podium challenger. We would like to thank our competition supporters Scooter Hut, Grit scooters, Crisp scooters, District scooters, Striker scooters, Root Industries as well as all the scooter riders and spectators who came to the competition. Mandurah Mazda Action Sports Games presented by Drug Aware – Skateboard competition April 2021

The Action Sports Games has been a staple of the competition scene for 10 years, the first taking place in Mandurah in 2011. After a few years the event moved to Bunbury and was held there for a few years and now it was back at Mandurah, held at the new Mandurah skatepark. What an amazing event the Mandurah Mazda Action Sports Games presented by Drug Aware was. The competition zone was the small bowl and street/plaza section so that it gave diversity to the competition so that competitors of many different styles and abilities could throw down. The skateboard competition was so well attended with large numbers of competitors all keen to roll out the rad and be involved supporting skateboarding. There was a strong turn out in the girls/ladies division as well as the beginners which was great to see. Some competitors entered in two different divisions such as Hailee Roberts and Mia Kretzer who exchange placings in the intermediates and girls with each taking a win and a second place. The Evens boys were in full effect and have also powered themselves up to the awesome level with Zen taking the win in the open class and Vai placing 4^th in the pro and Cruz 6^th in pro. These young boys have still got so much growing to do and will definitely be challenging the top pros very soon. In the pro class there was over $900 to share with the top 3. It was defiantly a close contest between Brendon Cross and Sam Ormski, with both skaters having so much power and skill pushing through their runs. Both went big. Both went fast, but it was Brendon who took the win by only 12 points.

Sam Ormski has so much flow and power in his style, he is so rad to watch as he navigates his way around the skatepark hitting up what ever is in this way. So much height in this over the hip, no one went higher than Sam, second place in the pro class and $260 cash winnings

Bassendean skatepark skateboard, scooter and BMX skatepark competition – February 2021

Freestyle Now hosted another skateboard, scooter and BMX skatepark competition at the Bassendean skatepark. This one was a long time coming. The last skatepark competition at Bassendean skatepark was in 2019 and there was one planned in 2020 but bad weather stopped it from taking place and before it could be rescheduled covid restrictions came in. So it was great to host another competition at Bassendean thanks to the Bassendean youth services, Always supporting the skatepark. As always there was a great turnout for the Bassendean skatepark competition with a good number of competitors spread over the three disciplines. Again a big thank you to Bassendean youth services and out supporters Grit Scooter , 4 skateboard co and Colony BMX. Ellenbrook skatepark BMX and scooter competition – January 2021

Freestyle Now hosted another skatepark competition at the Ellenbrook skatepark for bmx and scooter competitors. The day as always was action packed with a great turn out with lots of competitors and spectators. Shaun Jarvis – Rolling out the rad in April 2021 video

Shaun Jarvis April 2021 bmx edit has some crazy moments.

Freestyle Now co founder and squadron leader Shaun Jarvis has been riding BMX for 40 years and he is not slowing down just yet at 52 years of age. In April he attended many different locations with Freestyle Now hosting coaching sessions and skatepark competitions. The premise behind the video was to get clips at as many of the locations as possible that Freestyle Now visited. In some cases there was not much time to plan its was simply ride and film. Shaun explains “For me riding is an organic process, nothing should be forced, just let it flow. It was a lot of fun filming the clips. Looking at the spot and thinking how can I interact with what’s here and how does my riding fit with the location. Many of the clips are just freestyled, no set plan just as it flowed out. Some took longer than should have and some were a one and done. Over all I’m stoked on the clips, I pushed myself a bit more than normal, took some heavy slams and the outcome is some great memories. Big massive thanks to Kareece Furneyvall and Amos Hadad for their filming, really appreciate it. Stay rad”

Action Sports Games Returns to Mandurah for 2021

The 2021 Mandurah Mazda Action Sports Games presented by Drug Aware

The Action Sports Games has been a Western Australians premier action sports event for the past decade. First taking place in Mandurah, then moving to Bunbury and now it is back in Mandurah, one of the most fantastic settings in Western Australia for this type of event. Mandurah has some of WA’s best beaches, incredible inland waterways that are teeming with wildlife and a brand new epic skatepark just screaming for this type of event. Taking place over the weekend of 10th and 11th of April at Hall Park on the Mandurah Western Foreshore. The Mandurah Mazda Action Sports Games presented by Drug Aware is one weekend you don’t want to miss. The Mandurah Mazda Action Sports Games will be a combination of wakeboarding, freestyle motocross, skateboarding, BMX and scooter events into an action-packed weekend of extreme sports along with the Food Truck Festival and DJ’s keeping the good times rolling all day long. Have a look back to the 2020 Action Sports Games in Bunbury or the last time the Action Sports Games were in Mandurah in 2015

Over the two days the wakeboarding competition will be taking place on Mandjar Bay with freestyle motocross demos sprinkled in throughout the day. With a new skatepark freshly finished the skateboard, scooter and bmx competitions will defiantly be a highlight over the weekend with many top competitors all seeking to compete on such a rad skatepark for the over $4000 in prize money and prizes. With competitors able to enter a range of different classes form the young to the not so young including the pro class, who will be taking home some cash money on the day.

The skatepark action kicks off at 9am Saturday 10^th April with the skateboard competition and then at 1:30pm the scooter competition kicks of running into the last afternoon. Sunday 11^th April will be totally dedicated to the BMX competition. The full skatepark competition schedule and registration link is listed below so be sure to check it and then get registered. This is going to one epic weekend that you do not want to miss.

As part of the Mandurah Mazda Action Sports Games Freestyle Now will be hosting a skatepark competition for Skateboard, scooter and BMX competitors. There are many different classes for competitors to enter so be sure to check the information and schedules before you enter the competition.

Saturday 10^th April – Skateboard 9am – 12:30pm / Beginner, Intermediates, Girls / Ladies, Open, Pro

Saturday 10^th April – Scooter 1:30pm – 8pm / Under 10’s, Girls / Ladies, Beginners, Intermediates, Open, Pro

Sunday 11^th April – BMX 9am – 6pm / Under 10’s, Girls / Ladies, Beginners, Intermediates, Over 35’s, Over 45’s, Open, Pro

Mandurah Action Sports Games skatepark competition judging criteria
There are 3 judges that use the below judging criteria to award points according to the judging criteria
Skateboard competition is both run added together to form your total score. Highest points win
Scooter and BMX will be best run counts.

Difficulty. Best score possible from one judge – 20 points

Definition
- Tricks that are difficult to execute
- Technical tricks
- Difficult lines within the park
- Large gaps or high airs will also be taken into account

Diversity. Best score possible from one judge – 20 points

Definition
- A run consisting of various types of tricks (grinds, stalls and airs)
- Using the park to its full capability (tricking on as many obstacles as you can)
- Using the park in ways that other competitors are not (original lines through the park or tricking parts of the park that no one is tricking.)
- The more varied the run and the more obstacles ridden the higher the score.

Consistency. Best score possible from one judge – 20 points

Definition
- A run that has been done without any feet touching by mistake or crashes.
- Tricks done but not pulled smooth will also come into account with consistency points
- The less touches or crashes and the smoother the run the higher the score the competitor will receive

Bridgetown skatepark competition – January 2021

In 2008 Freestyle Now held a competition at the Bridgetown skatepark, one of the first at the then new skatepark. Now just over 12 years and 5 competitions later Freestyle Now was back to host another skatepark competition. This competition was the sixth one at Bridgetown skatepark and it was just as awesome as the past 5. With a great turn out of competitors and spectators the radness got rolled out by many. There was lots of prizes on offer and everyone that entered took home products, when that happened its awesome. A big thank you to Blackwood Youth Action and also to our supporters Grit Scooter, The 4 skateboard co and Colony BMX. Clockwise from top left – Jayden Sammit lives in Perth but returned to his home town of Bridgetown just to come and roll out the rad and take the win in the scooter open class. Great riding from Jayden. – Seth Jiblet took the win in the BMX open class riding brakeless and chainless. Great flow and smooth riding was one of the key factors in his win. – Noah Almond took home a 5^th in scooter beginners but as you can tell from the photo his determination will defiantly set him up for a win soon enough. – We were stoked to see Cooper Clause compete in Bridgetown and take the 5^th place in skateboard. Cooper is the son of Ben Clause who used to ride for Freestyle Now back in the early 2000’s. Its great seeing the off spring from past riders coming on through.
